Barry Callebaut has unveiled a dairy-free chocolate as part of the Swiss firm’s plant-based indulgence range following two years of product development.

The new ‘M_lk Chocolate’ is part of a wider portfolio of ‘Plant Craft’ products ranging from chocolate, cocoa, nuts and fillings to decorations aimed at artisans, confectioners and brands around the globe.

The new launch is aimed at millennials and centennials – AKA generation Z – who are looking for food that’s good for the planet that doesn’t comprises on taste or texture. It’s also geared towards those adopting a flexitarian lifestyle.

The ‘M_lk Chocolate’ is made with an ingredient of natural origin, exclusively available to Barry Callebaut, and which took the company’s R&D team two years to develop.

To bring these plant-based products to market, Barry Callebaut has developed a footprint of dairy-free production facilities in Europe. This includes a state-of-the-art chocolate factory in Germany

The new factory will be the Swiss manufacturer’s first facility capable of supplying dairy-free chocolate to the European market, with annual production capacity expected to reach tens of thousands of tons.

The factory will be opened as a dairy-free facility in the first half of 2021.
