Nestlé led partnership to develop sustainable plant-based products

Nestlé has partnered with Burcon and Merit to accelerate development of sustainable plant-based meat and dairy alternatives.

The partnership bolster’s Nestlé’s knowhow in the development, production and commercialisation of plant-based foods with Burcon’s propriety plant protein extraction and purification technology, while leveraging Merit’s protein production capabilities.

At its state-of-the-art facility, Merit will produce various plant-based protein ingredients using Burcon’s proprietary and patented extraction and purification technology.

Ryan Bracken, Merit co-CEO, said: “Merit has already demonstrated the impact of our novel proteins in plant-based foods. This new partnership helps build on this, and it’s a major step in developing the next generation of nutritious and delicious plant-based products that draw on the benefits of our novel proteins.”

Stefan Palzer, Nestlé Chief Technology Officer, added: “The partnership with Burcon and Merit will give us access to unique expertise and a new range of high-quality ingredients for plant-based food and beverages.”
