The introduction of a tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content has been announced in the Budget 2020.

“From April 2022, we will charge manufacturers and importers £200 per tonne on packaging made of less than 30% recycled plastic,” said Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

“That will increase the use of recycled plastic in packaging by 40% – equal to carbon savings of nearly 200,000 tonnes.”

The tax was first announced back in the Budget 2018 and, according to Mr Sunak, will tackle rising plastic levels in the natural environment as well as incentivise the use of recycled plastics.
