New year, new suppliers 22 This year Food and Drink International is calling on food businesses to inspect their supply chain, examine each and every one of their suppliers and ask themselves a simple question – am I getting the absolute best? If not, then now is the time to change. Health, safety and hygiene 24 Health, safety and hygiene are paramount in any business, but the fallout and damage to reputation of a food scare can and has caused the end of manufacturers in recent years. Sorting and weighing30 Sorting and weighing are vital aspects of food production - processes that can help address key industry challenges from reducing waste to increasing food safety and boosting operation optimisation. Pumps and fluids33 Efficacy and hygienic design are major factors when it comes to the pumps and fluid industry, so ensuring a food or drink manufacturer selects the very best is critical. Get a taste of new food and drink innovations from Wales Welsh food and drink producers are once again leading the way when it comes to food, health and sustainable nutrition. Leading the way is Bug Farm Foods, producers of innovative and unique products made with insect protein including Cricket Cookies, Buffalo Biscuits, and a range of insect powders and whole insects. Founders, entomologist Dr Sarah Beynon and chef Andy Holcroft, have launched a new insect and plant protein known as VEXo, developed to help tackle childhood obesity. VEXo can be used in a similar way to minced meat, whilst reducing saturated fat by 70-80%. VEXo was showcased at Food Matters Live in London in November as part of an 18 strong Food and Drink Wales delegation. Also featured at Food Matters Live was Alchemy Gold, a new start-up company offering turmeric based health drinks. Founder David Dunn spent three years researching and developing the product. Innovia extends its BOPP recycling certification Following the successful recycling certification of its Propafilm™ Strata SL high barrier film earlier this year by Interseroh, Innovia Films decided to extend the testing programme across all its uncoated, acrylic coated and EVOH barrier range of films. Stephen Langstaff, Global Business Manager, Packaging at Innovia Films, said: “This certification provides us with independent validation that our polypropylene films are fully recyclable.” Everyday products that have been manufactured from polypropylene can be reclaimed and reprocessed back into polymer pellets for use in a diverse range of commercial and industrial applications such as the moulding of plastic parts for the automotive industry. Mr Langstaff added: “If collection streams were standardised across the UK and Europe, polypropylene and other polyolefins could be recycled and reused without significant problem. The next step for Innovia is to work with partners to develop a food compliant stream so that recyclate can be incorporated back into film.” Valio to cut dairy’s carbon footprint to zero by 2035 Valio, the Finnish dairy manufacturer, claims that it will cut dairy’s carbon footprint to zero by 2035. As well as fighting climate change, the company claims that the move will also provide food makers with sustainable produced food ingredients. “Instead of just compensating for emissions, we are making major changes in our production chain in order to bring the carbon footprint of dairy down to zero in the future,” says Timo Pajari, SVP, Food Solutions Sales at Valio. “Our 2035 goal - carbon neutral dairy - means that the same amount of emissions is reduced and removed from the atmosphere as is generated on the farms, in transportation, at the plants, and in package manufacturing.” To help accomplish this aim, the company said that all its farms are becoming “carbon farms”. In 2019-20, it will train “at least” 200 volunteer farmers in carbon farming. Another key step includes the development of the new Valio CARBO grass seed mix which, it says, “further improves the carbon binding ability of grasslands”. Other climate measures include the usage of biogas to replace fossil fuels and the development of plant-based packaging. The first biogas-fuelled milk collection and distribution trucks hit the road in 2019, and Valio is working towards using cow manure to produce biogas. “In Finland, the production of carbon neutral milk is an achievable goal, as the production methods differ from those elsewhere,” said Pajari. “For instance, cows are fed mainly grass instead of soy.” Global Marketing Manager Emma Bowles © Shutterstock/Ville heikkinen 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2019 11:49 Page 26 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Heavy duty, precise safety knives and cutters Kite Packaging has launched a new range of industrial knives and cutters that ensure safe precision in the warehouse. Switching Sprite to clear PET bottles boosts recyclability Switching from green to clear PET bottles is allowing the Coca-Cola Company to significantly boost recycling of Sprite bottles in Southeast Asia. The change from the traditional green colour will make the PET bottles far easier to recycle, the company said. Transitioning to the new clear bottles began in November in the Philippines, Coca-Cola’s largest market in ASEAN. Sprite was first launched in the country back in 1968 and, until now, has been sold in the green bottles. Coca-Cola added that expansions to other markets in Southeast Asia will take place throughout 2020. The switch follows a similar move in Western Europe where the Coca-Cola system is well underway in changing the colour of its Sprite bottles. “Our research in six countries across Southeast Asia has shown that a change from coloured PET to transparent PET greatly increases the value of the plastic in the after-use market and therefore its ability to remain in a circular economy and be used again and again for different purposes,” said Ashwin Subramaniam, founder and CEO of GA Circular, a circular economy action and advisory company. “Phasing out the use of coloured PET beverage packaging is a key recommendation in our new report on accelerating the circular economy for post-consumer PET bottles in Southeast Asia and we applaud the decision by Coca-Cola to make the switch.” YPS to attend the Packaging Innovations Show 2020 In 2020, Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS) will once again be attending the leading UK packaging event, Empack, at the Birmingham NEC. Over the course of the two-day event, YPS will be demonstrating the very best in shrink and stretch wrapping solutions on stand E6. YPS will be demonstrating a range of manual to fully automatic shrink wrappers, including the impressive top of the range Hugo Beck Servo X high speed side sealer which boasts robust German engineering and intuitive controls. In addition, the Masterplat semi automatic stretch wrapper will be a working exhibit on the stand, primed and ready for demonstrations. Samples of the world-leading B-NAT bio-based polyolefin shrink film, manufactured by Bollore and exclusive to YPS, will be available for live trials with customer’s products. YPS are encouraging all exhibition visitors with ‘green’ concerns to visit their stand to see how shrink wrapping can indeed be part of any eco-friendly packaging operation. 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2019 11:49 Page 3Register your place at hrc.co.uk JOIN YOUR COMPETITORS AT THE UK’S LARGEST AND MOST PRESTIGIOUS HOSPITALITY AND FOODSERVICE EVENT 3 - 5 M a r c h 2 0 2 0 • E x C e L L o n d o n 3 - 5 M a r c h 2 0 2 0 • E x C e L L o n d o n O n e Ev e n t 6 5 0 S u p p l i e r s 1 0 0 0 ’ s o f p r o d u c t s T a l k s , T a s t i n g s & L i v e D e m o ’ s I d e a s & I n n o v a t i o n Bar Equipment Barbeques Beverage Equipment Boiling Equipment Cooking Equipment Cutlery Display Disposable Catering Equipment Fast Food & Pizza Equipment Food Prep Equipment Fryers Grills & Griddles Ice Cream Equipment Induction Knives & Utensils Mobile Mobile Catering Equipment Ovens Pots & Pans Ranges Refrigeration & Freezers Serveries & Counters Serving Equipment Ventilation Warewashers Toiletries Bar Accessories Fabrics & Textiles Flooring Indoor Furniture Outdoor Furniture Interior Design Health & Beauty Soft Furnishing Crockery Cutlery Glassware Menu Design Table Line Tableware Bathroom Accessories Lighting Spa Equipment Towels & Towelling Bedding & Linens Conference & Event Furniture Wireless Technology E-Commerce Solutions Electronic Locks Revenue Management Reservation Systems Hotel Management Property Management Systems POS & EPOS SystemsMusic & Audio Solutions Multimedia Mobile Apps Mobile Systems Hotel Technology Hospitality Marketing Solutions Handheld Technology Digital Marketing Data Management & Data Mining Billing Technology & Systems Data Management Systems Billing Technology & Software Bar & Pub Management Systems Food and Beverage Control Systems Guestroom Entertainment îČŒ~IJǶČĚ¹ĚČĺŠūŕūijNj F o u r Sh o w s Alcoholic Drinks Meat Ambient Goods Hot Beverages Bakery & Patisserie Dairy Products Desserts & Puddings Food Packaging Products Fresh Produce Frozen Gluten Free & Free From Vegan & Plant Based Ingredients Non-Alcoholic Drinks Sauces & Dips Dressing & Marinades Condiments Snacks Seafood Grab & Go Ethnic Foods 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2019 11:49 Page 48 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net Enquiries/Learn more: T +49 9 11 86 06-86 84 | beviale-moscow@nuernbergmesse.de beviale-moscow.com Global solutions. Under this new agreement, it will become Britvic’s preferred supplier of rPET in Great Britain and Ireland. Britvic will be providing £5 million of investment support for the construction of new rPET manufacturing facilities at Esterform’s site in Sherburn in Elmet. RIGGS AUTOPACK BabyLed Foods moving forward with Riggs Autopack depositor BabyLed Spreads are designed to be used in conjunction with foods that babies would otherwise be eating anyway as part of the weaning process. Owner Keith Brownsword developed his products and informally gathered feedback from friends and family to prove his ideas in principle. With baby foods, however, the need for salsa or similar accreditation is a pre-requisite to any production process prior to selling your product to the public. To start producing for the public, he needed to incorporate a ‘closed loop’ manufacturing process to guarantee not only the quality of the product, but also hygiene standards and food safety. This is when Mr Brownsword contacted Riggs Autopack for a suitable volumetric depositor. Following initial meetings and product trials, he purchased a Model 1000 Series 3 Depositor. This semi-automatic machine was supplied as a ‘direct feed’ configuration using rigid stainless- steel pipework to connect directly to the outlet on a mixing / cooking vessel, thus creating the ‘closed loop’ production process that Keith needed. This direct feed system ensures there’s no risk of product contamination during the transfer between the two pieces of equipment, and guarantee’s the legal minimum temperature for filling hot products into glass jars. Without the Riggs Autopack depositor, Mr Brownsword said he would not have been able to fill the jars quickly enough to ensure batch integrity and product quality. The baby food products are still hand prepared and cooked in small batches, then filled into jars one at a time, thus keeping the artisan nature of his high-quality brand.
