Health, safety and hygiene spotlight14 We all know how important health, safety and hygiene are when it comes to food, but there’s always an added responsibility for any food business operation, as keeping products free from harmful contaminants means the difference between happy customers, and a regrettable public health risk. Cartoning and sleeving18 Concerns over corporate sustainability, as well as the desire to keep manufacturing costs down amidst the cost of living crisis has caused some to re-evaluate whether standard packaging practices are as efficient as they could be. Conveying22 For any food production factory keeping efficiency and hygiene in mind, conveyers are the best and only way of moving products between machines. Therefore, it’s imperative not just to know that all systems have an attached conveyor to enable speedy flow, but also to ensure that all your chosen elements are at a high standard of cleanliness. Pumps and fluids 26 The pumps and fluids industry is booming in no small part due to an increased push toward heightened automation. With a heritage spanning over 140 years, US-based Second Nature Brands is a leader in the fast-growing snacks and treats market, focusing on the nutritional and lifestyle needs of health-conscious consumers. Its brands comprise Kar’s Nuts, Second Nature Snacks, and Sanders. For VOG Products, sustainability is comprehensive: it includes social, ecological and economic aspects. VOG Products’ sustainability strategy is based on six key themes: water, energy and climate protection, health and occupational safety, regional added value, healthy products and innovation. The management and the 210 employees are working hard at every level to achieve their ambitious goals. Probably the key environmental measure implemented in the 2022/23 financial year is the exhaust vapour compression and reuse project: in addition to saving steam, the performance required of the cooling tower is also reduced, as are CO2 emissions. The cooling water has already been optimised: VOG Products has calculated a savings potential of 700,000 cubic metres by using water twice as cooling and transport water. VOG Products has also achieved CO2 neutrality for Scope 2 since green energy solely from hydropower is being purchased in the electricity sector. The customer needed a pilot size mixer that could conduct trials during their development phase to replicate large scale industrial production methods. Winkworth recommended their stainless steel MZ10 high shear mixer, which is ideal for mixing, kneading and blending of dense materials for development. Featuring twin heavy duty Z blades and a manually operated hydraulic tilting mechanism, the 10 litre capacity of Winkworth’s range of laboratory and pilot mixers are small enough to reduce waste, yet large enough to be representative of production reality. “Throughout this smooth process we had good support from Winkworth - the mixer is ideal for our requirements and is delivering what we hoped for,” commented Winkworth’s customer. “We are frequently showing the mixer to our customers who, like us, are very impressed with its capabilities.” © stock.adobe.com/ New Africa 04-09.qxp_Layout 1 20/12/2022 09:40 Page 1news Finest Call x Re’Al festive NPD Finest Call and Re’Al have recently launched six new flavours to its range of premium syrups and mixes. These elevated surfaces also quickly become wet and slippery from liquid, grease, blood, and oil spillover, increasing the likelihood of employee slips and falls if not adequately mitigated. Efforts to address these danger zones with quick fixes such as “Slippery When Wet” signs, tape or diamond plate can make wet areas even more hazardous. SLIPNOT manufactures specialized safety flooring products and surface technologies that reduce slips and falls by over 90%. The patented coating technology is applied to steel, stainless steel, and aluminum with a maximum bond strength of more than 4,000 psi, resulting in an extremely durable and long-lasting surface. Whereas other anti-slip surfaces become more slippery as they wear down, the random matrix of thousands of tiny peaks created by the SLIPNOT process maintain its anti-slip properties over time. Even when wet from liquids, detergent, fats and oils, the surface maintains its high-friction qualities, so production can often continue despite the presence of contaminants that would otherwise bring it to a halt. SLIPNOT’s stainless steel safety flooring products and technologies are approved by NSF, thus adhering to the strict hygiene and sanitary requirements for food production and processing. SLIPNOT products can be prefabricated or manufactured to order in stock and custom sizes. The company’s safety experts are also available to audit for slip and fall hazards and identify and remediate high-risk areas around a facility. Plastic recycling innovation receives funding boost with global prize Research into developing new sustainable ways to decontaminate plastic packaging for recycling has been given a boost with $3m funding after winning a global prize. The University of Nottingham’s School of Chemistry is part of the COtooCLEAN multi-participant project by Nextex Ltd which has won the Alliance Prize in Circular Solutions for Flexibles. Researchers are developing a disruptive waterless, non-toxic cleaning process for polyolefin films that are commonly used for packaging edible and non-edible goods. The process is based on using low-pressure super- critical CO2 (scCO2) combined with green co-solvents to remove oils, fats and printing inks and will fill a gap in the recycling stream that is currently missing. This new process was one of around 600 bids for the Alliance Prize which was whittled down to five finalists. Following a final pitch at the New York Stock Exchange, Nextex was awarded the prestigious prize of $3m to fast-track COtooCLEAN’s ground breaking process to decontaminate post-consumer plastic films back to food-grade quality. © stock.adobe.com/ littlewolf1989 © stock.adobe.com/ artem_goncharov Foothold by SLIPNOT Food and beverage plant surfaces can easily become slip and fall hazards when wet or contaminated by grease, fat, animal by-product, blood, and other substances. Fast-track hire filtration service The decision to invest valuable CAPEX into untested High Value Equipment carries risks and fears that are typically a step too far for most companies and individuals. Will the equipment work? Is it the right solution? Will it ultimately be a waste of company funds? These are all questions that stop CAPEX purchases in their tracks on a regular basis. Filtration specialists Axium Process now have the answer to these questions, with the launch of a membrane separation rental service developed specifically to bypass traditional concerns and provide a fast-track solution. Axium’s new service is a valuable resource for fast or temporary technical filtration solutions that would normally involve time-consuming research and risky commitments to large capital investment. “The UF2Go and RO2Go crossflow systems provide an exceptionally practical solution for urgent filtration needs,” says Derek Davies, Business Development Director at Axium Process. “Both systems are available through a rental model typically using OPEX, which bypasses the usual CAPEX restrictions but allows observation of long-term trends. It’s ideal for situations where a permanent installation may be required at a future point.” 04-09.qxp_Layout 1 20/12/2022 09:40 Page 3Ferrero Group to acquire Wells Enterprises Ferrero has agreed to acquire Wells, its operations and its strong ice cream brands, which include Blue Bunny, Blue Ribbon Classics, Bomb Pop and Halo Top. Commercial drinks supplier toasts to continued success with six-figure funding package A commercial drinks company is set for further growth as it moves into larger premises. Riviera Drinks Co. is a soft-drinks supplier focusing on ‘bag in box’ dispensary systems across pubs, clubs, and restaurants across the UK. With the help of a six-figure asset finance loan and refinancing package, Riviera has now built a new production facility and warehouse in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire. The new site has upgraded the firm’s existing equipment and allowed it to add new capabilities in-house. This includes a new filling line for bottled products and a labelling machine, allowing Riviera to expand into syrups and liqueurs for cocktails and ensure better consistency and quality across its products. Currently the syrup and liqueur market is primarily served by French companies, so the business hopes it can appeal to the domestic market. Utilising its new and improved facilities, Riviera is also now trialling draft cocktails using its ‘bag in box’ experience and pure-grade food nitrogen technology, which is already used in some stout and beer manufacturing and will target venues who don’t currently have the facilities to make their own cocktails.
