Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute forProcess Engineering and Packaging (IVV) andProlupin have found a way to produce herbal lupinprotein isolate (LPI), which is similar to animalproteins, from lupin seeds. On the European market, the high protein content of lupins could make the plant a climate-friendly and GMO-free alternative to soy beansimported from Asia and South America. In Germany, lupin drinks are now available in carton packs from SIG Combibloc, under the umbrella brand MADEWITH LUVE. Malte Stampe, managing director of Prolupin GmbH: “We decided to bring out our lupin drinks in cartonpacks. They safeguard the quality of the beverages, and are gentle on the environment. Carton packs are composed on average up to 75 per cent of wood, arenewable resource. That means they use less fossil resources than products like PET bottles. For this reason, we think lupin drinks and carton packs fittogether very well.”PFM to exhibit at Easyfairs Empack showStand-up bags with pockets, anautomatic system to producesandwich ‘grab-bags’ and a seriesof re-closable bag options areamong innovations in flexiblepackaging featured by Italianmachinery manufacturer PFM.The stand-up bags are madefrom a single web of film on thePFM Zenith Duo Bag machine andprovide an additional pocket tohold promotional items oraccessories.Typical applications are snacks such as cheese and processed meat with their own cutleryand wipes, confectionery promotions with giveaways, and pasta with sachets of spice orflavouring. McDonald’s partners with James Cropper forpioneering recyclingtrial British papermaker James Cropper hasentered into a trial recycling partnershipwith McDonald’s UK, as the two explorepioneering moves in sustainability andrecycling. The partnership will enable paper cupsused in McDonald’s restaurants across theUK, every week, to be recycled at James Cropper’s state-of-the-art reclaimed fibre plant –turning previously non-recyclable, plastic-coated paper cups into new paper products. The trial recycling scheme – a UK first – has been rolled out across 150 of McDonald’s 1,250UK restaurants so far. Paper cups are collected from McDonald’s and then baled by SimplyCups, the UK’s only paper cup recovery and recycling scheme, before being delivered toJames Cropper for reprocessing. Reclaimed fibre can then be used in everything frombrochures and stationery to designer gift boxes. The process results in no wastage whatsoever – with 90 per cent of the cup waste beingconverted back into FSC® certified fibre for paper production and the remaining 10 per cent, which is plastic, being repurposed as garden furniture, for example.SIMS control panel booststhe energy efficiency ofwater heating by up to 10%Spirax Sarco has launched the SIMS (Spirax IntelligentMonitoring System) control panel to enable steam usersto boost the energy efficiency of their existing EasiHeat™steam-to-hot-water systems by up to 10%.
