Macsa ID’s powerful laser system used to static marking on oak wine barrels Macsa ID UK’s compact K-1030 HPD laser system has been used for the static marking of oak wine barrels. The powerful, high performance 30 watt CO? model was chosen for its ability to achieve optimum definition on the high density wood. The powerful laser system is ideal for marking wood such as oak as it delivers excellent contrast engraving as well as a high-quality focal point. Typically, the legibility of the mark depends on the quality and complexity of the logo itself. The more defined the greyscale is, the better the definition achieved on the wood. Offering a combination of laser cutting and coding in one unit makes Macsa’s HPD lasers very suitable for integration into forming, filling and sealing machines. Simple to install and integrate, the laser is fully network enabled and equipped with an on-board computer making an external PC unnecessary. It covers large areas of marking while maintaining excellent definition and legibility. A single, external clamping pad secures the reels on the external diameter which means that they can be lifted with ease and confidence. The clamping pressure is also carefully regulated to ensure safe action without risk of damaging the material on the reel. The reels are also securely gripped by the core. This enables the operator to lift and handle the reels securely and safely. This handling solution is suitable for the food industry and other hygienic applications. All Packline attachments are fully interchangeable and can be easily fitted or removed from any Packline lifter that is fitted with the quick release system. This lifting solution has a 300kg (661lbs) maximum capacity. 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/01/2020 11:33 Page 1Smart sensing in 3D Built-in apps make 3D sensor easy to use KHOoUCOC\KPIUOCTVVKOGQHƃKIJV&UGPUQTJCUDWKNVKPCRRUHQT r%QORNGVGPGUUKPRCEMCIKPIQTRCNNGVKUKPI r%JGEMKPIXQNWOGUKPOCVGTKCNUJCPFNKPI r.GXGNUQHDWNMOCVGTKCN /CMKPIKVUQGCU[VQUGVWRCP[QPGECPFQKV ;QWoNNDGCOC\GF www.ifm.com/uk/o3d ifm Telephone (020) 8213 1111 years W A R R AN T Y o n i f m R r oF W E t s 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/01/2020 11:33 Page 26 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net Innova Adva ation anced C Cold Lo ogistics G Ă 9 V G ld Chain rust Autom Innov mation atio Agility –W NewCold Contact: Jon Miles + E: jon.miles@newcol y orking with Our Customer +44 7740 924 695 ld.com alue and Qualirs to Add V he 21st Century Colity in th www.newcold.com 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/01/2020 11:33 Page 3Veolia Water Technologies UK launches NURION™ Water technology expert, Veolia Water Technologies UK (VWT UK) has launched NURION™, a skid- mounted, reverse osmosis (RO) system designed to produce high-quality ingredient water. Lack of progress in voluntary salt reduction targets - survey Food manufacturers have been accused of “pathetic progress” on salt reduction efforts after a survey found that two rashers of bacon were saltier than eight bags of crisps. The findings from non- profit Action on Salt expose the “dismal lack of progress” made by the food industry in meeting voluntary reduction targets. Of the 171 bacon products collected from ten main UK supermarket chains, 86% have a salt concentration equal to or greater than seawater. As well as highlighting products with alarming salt levels, the survey shows that bacon can be made with far less salt. The least salty bacon overall was The Co-operative 8 Reduced Fat Unsmoked Bacon Medallions with 1.45g/100g of salt – 4 times less salt compared to the saltiest bacon offender. The non-profit is now urging government to reignite a comprehensive salt reduction programme, with mandatory targets for salt levels in products that all companies would be expected to meet and strict penalties / levies for those who fail to comply. © Shutterstock/zkruger © Shutterstock/Nina Firsova © Memphis Meats 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/01/2020 11:33 Page 48 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Starbucks to become ‘resource-positive company’ Starbucks has set science-based targets for carbon, water and waste for 2030 as part of newly unveiled efforts to be a “resource-positive company”. Lead researcher Lauren Bandy and colleagues looked at the nutritional information of a range of soft drinks in the UK and combined this with sales data from 2015-2018. The research, published in BMC Medicine, shows that individual soft drink companies in the UK are making a sizeable contribution to sugar reduction, with eight out of the top 10 companies reducing the sugar content of their products by 15% or more. “These changes are likely to be due to a combination of government action, mostly through the SDIL, changes in marketing practices on the part of the soft drinks industry, and greater awareness of the harms caused by sugary drinks amongst consumers,” Brady said. “They show that it is possible for improvements in public health to be consistent with successful business practices.” © Shutterstock/science photo © Shutterstock/Marcos Mesa Sam Wordley PepsiCo to hit 100% renewable electricity in US PepsiCo has announced that its US direct operations will be entirely powered by renewable electricity this year. This represents a significant contribution to the company’s goal of reducing absolute GHG emissions across its global value chain by 20% by 2030 against a 2015 baseline. To achieve this target in the US, PepsiCo plans to target a diversified portfolio of solutions. These include Power Purchase Agreements and Virtual Power Purchase Agreements, which finance the development of new renewable electricity projects. It will also utilise renewable energy certificates, which are credits certified by independent third parties that support existing green electricity generation from renewable sources. © Shutterstock/lovelyday12 © Shutterstock/Ekaterina_Minaeva Brother UK and Nutritics respond to Natasha’s Law with new labelling system Nutrition software developer, Nutritics, has announced a new partnership with technology solutions provider Brother UK, designed to help food service firms of all sizes to comply with Natasha’s Law and boost efficiency.
