The 40,000 square foot buildinghouses a new state-of-the-art manufacturing andblending plant, as well as warehousing and generaloffice accommodation. The factory recently achieved Grade A in its firstBritish Retail Consortium inspection. Scientists shed dependence on seasonality Scientists at the John Innes Centre are reducingdependence on seasonality by developing a newline of fast-growing sprouting broccoli that growsfrom seed to harvest in 8-10 weeks. The new line has the potential to deliver twofull crops a season in-field, or it can be grown allyear round in protected conditions. This innovation in crop production builds onthe wealth of fundamental research carried outby Professor Dame Caroline Dean and her lab onvernalisation – the need for some plants toexperience a period of cold weather before theycan flower. The consequences of our changing climate areone of the main issues facing crop production. The British Food Report published in February, together with recent headlines has shown how vulnerable our vegetable supply is toadverse weather conditions, both at home and abroad. In addition to having a short growing period, there is the opportunity to moveproduction into urban farms enabling reductions in the carbon footprint of foodproduction and supply.Europe’s soft drinks industry agrees10% sugar reduction by 2020Europe’s soft drinks industry isrolling out a new initiate to combatsugars levels amid surmountingscientific evidence and changingconsumer preferences. The commitment will be deployedacross Europe and sees addedsugars reduced by a further 10% by2020. The industry has been underadded pressure from Member Statesand the European Commission (EC)who have called for a “coordinatedapproach to reformulation and sugar reduction”.To meet this aim, the industry will use a combination of innovation, reformulation, smaller pack sizes, and by encouraging consumerstowards low- and no-calorie alternatives. The commitment follows existing and new local industry pledges onsugar reduction, and covers over 500 million consumers. Dan Sayre and Nikos Koumettis, Presidents of The Coca-ColaCompany’s Business Units in Europe, said: “We believe that this and theother actions we are taking will help more people make the rightdecisions for them and their families.”UK amid ‘vegetable crisis’ asSpanish imports suffer Southern Europe has suffered unusually harshweather, comprising many of the vegetable cropsthat British supermarkets depend on during thewinter months. As a result, prices rosesignificantly amid dwindling stock in what hasbeen branded the ‘vegetable crisis’. Subsequently, supermarkets have beenforced to ration vegetables to stem bulkbuying with broccoli, iceberg lettuces andcourgettes the worst affected vegetables. The poor conditions have also affectedimports from across the continent, withtomatoes and aubergines suffering. Spainhas fared worse, leaving high prices andempty shelves in British supermarkets. In2015, Spain supplied the UK with more than25% of its vegetable imports. UK farmers, onthe other hand, supplied just 52% of the nation’s food in the same year, demonstrating just how reliant the nation is on imports. This has causedgovernment and industry to consider Britain’s food system andcontemplate the future. As of going to print, courgettes, spinach and iceberg lettuce havereturned to British shelves with the crisis apparently abated.
