Here’s a sneak peak of a story that took place recently. Sugar might be getting a bad rap in the beverage and snack food markets, but anew scheme launched by Tesco is using sugar to help struggling bees. Sugar from split bags that is no longer fit for human consumption is collected bythe supermarket’s stores in the Cornwall and Devon area and sent to a local beeconservation charity.Beekeepers then turn the sugar into syrup or fondant which is given to the bees asa replacement for nectar and honey.Since 2007 the UK’s bee population has dwindled by a third as a result of fewerwildflowers, pests and various diseases, all of which makes it harder for bees toproduce enough honey to feed themselves throughout the winter.Lucy Hughes, Tesco’s Community Manager at Callington store in Cornwall, said:“Bees are not only central to the process of pollinating crops which later become ourfood but are an iconic part of the Great British countryside.”The programme, which is run in partnership with the Bee Improvement Programmefor Cornwall (BIPCo) currently involves nearly 10 stores in the West Country.DiaryFood & Drink54_Layout 1 27/02/2017 10:28 Page 1STORAGE AND AUTOMATION FOR FOOD AND BEVERAGEProviding the essential link between production and distribution, SSI SCHAEFER’s storage and automation solutions for foods and beverages have been designed to simplify the handling process and also serve to drive costs down in wholesale, retail and e-commerce ssi-schaefer.comTel: +44 (0)1772 323529Email: sales@dixoneurope.co.ukwww.dixoneurope.co.ukYour Right ConnectionFor Hygienic Process SystemsValvesFittingsHoseEngineered ProductsFabrication55_Layout 1 27/02/2017 10:29 Page 1Innovating your logistics for a better worldwww.schoellerallibert.comsmoother.lighter.stronger.MAXILOG®The new Schoeller Allibert big boxSmooth & Safe :Lightweight : Strong :Contact us : information@schoellerallibert.comeasy to clean and to emptyonly 36,8 kg reducing transport cost & gas emission450 kg unit load and 4500 kg stacking load56_Layout 1 27/02/2017 10:29 Page 1Next >
