< Previous50 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netFOODEX - HYDRATECH Q&AQ&ASteve Hickson, Managing Director at HydratechProcess cooling technology is an ever-developing science, coerced by financial and environmental pressures tosimultaneously lower operating costs and greenhouse emissions.Recent industry headlines have focused on rapidly escalatingcosts for primary (gas) refrigerants, but Hydratech ManagingDirector Steve Hickson says equal attention should be given tothe development of high-performance secondary-refrigerants.40-51_Layout 1 27/02/2018 09:51 Page 11Food & Drink International 51www.fdiforum.netFOODEX - HYDRATECH Q&AWhat’s the difference between aprimary and secondaryrefrigerant?A primary refrigerant is a gas, such asammonia, CO2 or one of manyhydrocarbon-based refrigerants. In linewith global legislation there are nowlaws governing the use of CFC’s andHCFC’s and their replacement withmore environmentally friendlyalternatives.A measure often adopted to furtherreduce the demand for primaryrefrigerants, is to consolidate theassociated cooling equipment into asingle plant-room and, in supermarkets,to replace direct-exchange (DX) displaycabinets with a secondary-refrigerantring-main.Secondary refrigerants are usuallymixtures of water, antifreeze andinhibitors to prevent prematurecorrosion, scaling and biologicalcontamination. The heat transfercapability and pumping characteristicsof the combined mixture has a directeffect on CoP, energy consumption, plant size and ROI.Are there different types ofsecondary refrigerants?Yes, there are around twenty differentchemicals which, when mixed withwater, will readily lower the freezingpoint below zero Centigrade. Thermaloils can also operate at sub-zerotemperatures, but their heat transferperformance is relatively poor andviscosity very high compared withaqueous-based solutions – hencethermal oils are mostly used for high-temperature applications >100C.The two most common groups ofchemicals found in secondary-refrigerants are glycols and brines.Occasionally ‘brine’ is used tocategorise all antifreeze solutions, butthis is confusing and best avoided. Brine solutions are based on the saltsof; calcium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium formate etc., they have goodthermal and pumping characteristicsbut can prove highly corrosive, evenwhen blended with a suitable corrosioninhibitor. If a brine-based secondary-refrigerant is considered the onlyalternative, the choice of metals usedfor pipe-work and heat-exchangerconstruction is sensitive and minimalexposure to air (oxygen) is a must.Until recently the two most commontypes of glycol found in secondary-refrigerants were Ethylene Glycol andPropylene Glycol. How does Propylene Glycolcompare with Ethylene Glycol? In the context of secondaryrefrigerants, the single advantage PGhas over EG is that PG is not classifiedas toxic. Hence PG has been the go-toglycol for use in food and beveragecooling systems for the last 70 years. However, EG-water mixtures haveseveral operating advantages comparedwith PG mixtures, including:•Less volume to achieve freeze protection.•Improved rates of heat transfer.•Lower viscosity reduces pumping energy.• Cheaper per litre to buy.• Less prone to market forces and shortages. In cooling systems where PG mustoperate below -30C, the issues of highviscosity often prove troublesome, requiring multi-stage circulating pumpsand more powerful motors. When suchlow temperatures are required, designers often have no option otherthan select a brine based secondaryrefrigerant. As previously mentioned, whilst brines have excellent heattransfer and pumping characteristics, they are highly corrosive, especially inthe presence of air.Can Hydratech offer a moreefficient glycol alternative toPG, which is also Non-Toxic?Yes. CoolFlow DTX was introduced in2011 as a high performance non-toxicsecondary refrigerant, suitable forreplacing PG in food and beveragecooling systems. Performance wiseCoolFlow DTX has very similar heattransfer and pumping characteristics toEG and subsequently benefits from theabove mentioned operating advantages.Who in the food and beveragesector are already usingCoolFlow DTX?The list of CoolFlow DTX adopters isnow extensive and includes a host ofwell-known companies from the foodand beverage sectors, including; Arla,Warburtons, DairyGold, Morrisons,Diageo, Hovis, Molson Coors, Aldi, Lidl,Brewdog, Eli Lilly, Country Style Foods,Tiny Rebel, Co-op, Faccenda foods etc.DTX based coolants are also used in avariety of industrial and commercialsectors, where non-toxicity and lowenvironmental impact are high priorities.End users and contractors from thesesectors include; Honeywell Aerospace,Aggreko - Temperature Control Division,Daiken, Siemens, Mercedes, J&E Hall,Star Refrigeration, GE Aviation andAMEC to name a few. So, it would betrue to say CoolFlow DTX is making aname as the non-toxic high-efficiencyalternative to propylene glycol. If you would like to know moreabout Hydratech, the CoolFlowrange of heat transfer fluids orobtain a copy of the DTX Dossier, please contact Steve Hickson on+44(0) 1792 586800 or email him atsteve@coolflow.co.uk.40-51_Layout 1 27/02/2018 09:51 Page 1252 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netTHE HEALTH & SAFETY EVENTAside from their devastating humancost, occupational accidents and ill-health bear a significant cost toemployers through staff absence andhigher insurance premiums. Staying up-to-date when it comes tohealth & safety is therefore essential torunning a safe and efficient workplaceand there are some significant changestaking place. Five you need toknow about in 2018 1) ISO 45001 is comingISO 45001 is a new standard due tobe published in March 2018 which hasbeen designed to improve occupationalhealth & safety management aroundthe world.ISO 45001 is intended for use by anyorganisation, regardless of its size orthe nature of its work, and can beintegrated into other health & safetyprogrammes. Under the standard’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework topmanagement are required todemonstrate commitment throughleadership to ensure that workers havethe appropriate skills to support theirhealth and safety and that effectivecontrols are put in place. 2) Changes to sentencingguidelines are starting to bite Following the introduction of the newsentencing guidelines for health andsafety, corporate manslaughter and foodsafety and hygiene offences, whichcame into force in February 2016, finelevels for companies prosecuted foroffences under the Health and Safety atWork Act 1974 and associatedregulations have increased dramatically. A key change is that companies cannow be heavily penalised for causingrisk of harm as well as actual harm andconsequently cases which would oncehave attracted fines in the thousandsare now resulting in fines in the millions.3) The rise of Industry 4.0 isbringing both challenges andopportunitiesThe world of work is changing rapidlynot least through the rise of Industry 4.0.People are living and working for longer;many tasks are being automated;modern communication technologies aredissolving the work/home divide; newmaterials like nanotechnology (includingtiny air-born waste products that candamage our health) and new techniquesare presenting new risks; and more‘flexible’ employee contracts arebecoming commonplace. A literature review from The BritishSafety Council examining these changessuggests they will be good for workerhealth and wellbeing but there will bemany associated challenges to navigateand risks that business leaders will needto understand and control.4) Building a culture ofengagement pays dividendsThere has been much discussionabout building a positive health andsafety culture and adopting theprinciples of behavioural safety, butleading organisations are now movingtowards an engagement culture.Evidence suggests engaged employeeswho share a common goal can becomekey advocates for a business andimprove every aspect of theirperformance including health andsafety.5) Lessons from elite sports canimprove worker health andsafety There is a body of evidence to showthat poor nutrition and overuse ofcaffeine and sugar can affect attentionand coordination sufficiently to impacton safety as well as long term health.Employers have started turning to theworld of elite sport to learn how theprinciples of effective nutrition can beapplied in the workplace for significantgain.
