The ‘Weighing up the Facts? Does Dairy Deliver’ conference in London highlighted the dairy industry’s efforts to reduce the sugar content of its products, in line with the targets laid down in the Childhood Obesity Plan. In the yogurt and fromage frais category, the industry achieved a 6% reduction in sugar content, surpassing the target of 5% laid down by Public Health England. The Childhood Obesity Plan laid down ambitious targets, asking the industry to reduce sugar consumption by 20% by 2020, and a 5% reduction in the first year. Dr Judith Bryans, Chief Executive of Dairy UK, said: “These results just go to show the fantastic work the industry has done to reduce the sugar content of dairy products, not just meeting but surpassing the year one target set by Government.”Record number of products unveiled at international trade event Over 100 new food and drink products will be launched at the forthcoming BlasCymru/TasteWales international trade event (March 20-21). The milestone has been reached in part thanks to initiatives put in place by Food & Drink Wales over recent years, such as their Cluster Network approach that brings like-minded businesses together to share best practice and develop new ideas. The new products vary widely and include new yoghurts, baked products, new food service offers and product packaging. They will be sharing that stage with some of the food world’s leading speakers and thinkers that will be taking part in the event and accompanying conference, as Welsh food and drink continues to develop its reputation on the international stage. These include Claus Meyer, whose Noma restaurant has been named the world’s best on four occasions. It was announced last year that industry giant Princes has been unveiled as headline sponsor. Efficient removal of wine spoilage microorganisms Amazon Filters offers a range of high performance SupaPore VPW sterile filters designed to efficiently remove all spoilage microorganisms from wine. In wine production it is important that the wine is microbiologically stabilised for prolonged shelf life. This needs to be achieved without affecting the nature of the product and in a cost-effective manner. In response to this industry need, Amazon Filters developed the SupaPore VPW filter range which contains an advanced single layer PES membrane that offers the highest flow rates whilst effectively removing all spoilage microorganisms. The SupaPore VPW filter is the first choice for most applications in red and white wine applications. However, where the wine presents challenges from a life perspective then the SupaPore VPWA is used, because of its integral prefilter layer that significantly extends product shelf life. Both these high-performance filters provide excellent flow rates and superior throughputs, without affecting taste, aroma or colour. news© Shutterstock/Artem Shadrin04-11.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2019 12:00 Page 1www.ifm.com/uk/smart-valve-sensorwww.ifm.com/uk/smart-valve-sensorifm telephone 020 8213 2222ifm telephone 020 8213 2222Smart Valve Sensor – the intelligent way to monitor valvesWhether open, closed or in intermediate position: The new valve sensor detects any position of the valve to the nearest degree and indicates it by an LED strip, which is visible from all sides. The ‘Fake Meat Facts’ campaign aims to “shine a spotlight” on the many unknowns that the federal government must clarify before finalising the regulatory framework for these emerging products. Last year, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a framework for regulating lab-grown fake meat. However, as NCBA noted at the time, many details still need to be worked out. Additional information about the production, composition, and safety of cell-cultured protein, they say, is needed to inform the development of a comprehensive framework that protects consumers. NCBA President Jennifer Houston said: “NCBA will continue to push for increased transparency to ensure consumers know the facts about lab-grown fake meat production.”IBM and McCormick developing food products with AI IBM has teamed up with flavour specialist McCormick & Company to pioneer the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop new spice blends. Using IBM Research AI for Product Composition, McCormick aims to usher in “a new era of flavour innovation and changing the course of the industry”. McCormick’s product developers will be able to explore flavour territories more quickly and efficiently using AI to learn and predict new flavour combinations from hundreds of millions of data points across the areas of sensory science, consumer preference and flavour palettes. This, McCormick said, will allow it to develop more creative, better tasting products and new flavour experiences across both its Consumer and Flavour Solutions business units. McCormick expects to launch ‘ONE’, its first AI-enabled product platform, by mid-2019, with a set of initial one-dish Recipe Mix flavours including Tuscan Chicken, Bourbon Pork Tenderloin and New Orleans Sausage.Unilever bolsters healthy snacking pipeline with graze buy graze, the healthy snacking brand that went from mail order to supermarket darling, has been acquired by multinational Unilever for an undisclosed amount. Having started in 2008 with a snack box delivery service, graze is now a multichannel brand, with products available via retail stores, ecommerce and direct to consumer. Unilever said that graze and its broad portfolio of healthy snack products accelerates its presence in the fast-growing healthy snacking and out of home markets. Nitin Paranjpe, President of Unilever’s Food & Refreshment business, said: “Accelerating our presence in healthy foods and out of home this is an excellent strategic fit for the Unilever Food & Refreshment business, and a wonderful addition to our stable of purpose driven brands.” Anthony Fletcher, graze CEO, added: “This deal marks a transformational moment in graze’s growth journey. graze believes that learning from Unilever’s sustainable living plan will become a key driver for the business.”Goplasticpallets.com pledges to recycle all plastic pallets and boxes Goplasticpallets.com has pledged to recycle every plastic pallet and plastic box it supplies to customers. This comes in the wake of negative media coverage on single-use plastics and the devastating impact it is having on our environment and marine life. Last October 250 major brands vowed to eliminate all single-use plastics from their operations and invest in new technology so all packaging could be recycled by 2025. Now Goplasticpallets.com is proving that it is a step ahead and leading the way in recycling plastic waste, by not only supplying the UK’s largest range of multi-use, recyclable plastic pallets and boxes, but also committing to ensure they are ethically recycled at the end of their long use. Currently 96% of the plastic pallets Goplasticpallets.com supplies are made from recycled materials. Just 4% are produced from virgin material which is recommended for ultra-hygienic environments, for instance some food and pharmaceutical products.© Shutterstock/anyaivanova© graze© Shutterstock/Milos BatinicCarlsberg relies on Eilersen World-class beer has been brewed on Valby Bakke in Copenhagen since 1847. The Carlsberg specialty brewhouse Jacobsen is located in the historical, listed buildings, which poses challenges when it comes to efficient production. However, Eilersen weighing systems that monitor and control the content of the brewery’s storage vessels and fermentation tanks help solve this problem. The installed weighing systems consist of both ultramodern digital solutions and old versions from the 1980s. All load cells from Eilersen are based on patented capacitive technology and made from laser welded stainless steel, which ensures both high accuracy and robustness, and the ability to withstand heavy overloading. Despite the benefits of upgrading to a more recent weighing solution Jacobsen still uses Eilersen load cells that were installed in the 1980s in that Eilersen’s load cells are very reliable and therefore still work impeccably. Jan Juul, Production Manager with Jacobsen, said: “Eilersen supplies reliable weighing systems that fit well with our needs and applications.”04-11.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2019 12:00 Page 304-11.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2019 12:00 Page 48 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netnewsDNA & environmental monitoring strengthening quality in produce SafeTraces and Mérieux NutriSciences are collaborating with the aim of bringing innovative, fully integrated solutions to strengthen quality in the produce sector. Combining a DNA-based solution (saniDART) and an innovative software to manage Environmental Monitoring Programs (EnviroMap), the two companies will allow produce manufacturers to more easily manage their plant sanitation processes, decrease the risk of contamination and deliver their product more cost-effectively. The SafeTraces’ saniDART solution uses a system of non-living, food-grade DNA-tagged particles that behave like pathogenic bacteria under the action of sanitisers. These particles become the basis for a 15-minute, on-site sanitation verification for food processing plants. It can be safely used on both food and non-food surfaces, giving processors the unique ability to take corrective action in real time. “This partnership represents a joint commitment to food safety,” says Tim Freier, Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Microbiology at Mérieux NutriSciences North America. Irish insect specialist targets international expansion Irish agri-tech business Hexafly has topped up its funding pot after securing a further 1.1 million to expand into international markets including Europe, the US and Asia. This latest finance brings its total funding to €2.2 million and will help to fund 50 new jobs over the next two years, a new larger production facility and power the company’s international expansion. Hexafly was established in 2016 by Alvan Hunt and John Lynam who developed a method of sustainable insect farming that converts low value waste streams – using black solider flies – into high-value feeds, fertilisers and bioplastics. It supplies these insect-derived products to a range of companies in the aqua and animal feed, medical, cosmetic, food and plant nutrition industries. With more than 90% of its products exported and growing demand in the Far East and US, the company is planning to pursue a €10 million series A round in 2019 to fund a larger production facility. Beyond Food scaling food upcycling tech Beyond Food, the Canadian start-up developing sustainable food upcycling technology, has secured $1 million in seed funding from a mix of industry and sports investors. The funding round was led by several notable investors including cable communications pioneer Stu Rath and environmental technology inventor Jamie Bagnell. Several professional athletes including Joe Thornton (San Jose Sharks), Adam Lowry (Winnipeg Jets), and John-Michael Liles (Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs) also invested. Beyond Food manufactures plant-based functional foods and sports nutrition products under the brand TDF Sports. One of its key products is the Zero Waste Pod, a patent-pending technology that at scale promises to “dramatically improve issues related to food waste, the environment and food insecurity”. The company said this recent funding will help it to expand its engineering and sales teams as well as develop new partnerships with key organisations, universities and grocers.Food making headway with sustainability The food industry is making strides towards a more sustainable food system with the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) detailing efforts of its members to reduce CO2 emissions and water consumption. The FDF’s 2018 sustainability report highlights the work done by its members towards its environmental ambitions set out in 2016. This includes a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions – down 53% since 1990 – and a reduction in water consumption – down 39% since 2008. Over the course of the last year, FDF supported several sustainability initiatives, including the UK Plastics Pact, of which the organisation is a founding signatory, along with many of its members. It also contributed to recommendations for reform of the packaging producer responsibility system which helped influence Defra’s recently published ‘Resources and Waste Strategy’, as well as supporting the food waste campaigns ‘Your Business is Food’ and ‘Food Waste Reduction Roadmap’.Tyson strengthens global protein footprint Tyson Foods is expanding its global protein production footprint with the $340 million purchase of the Thai and European operations of BRF. The deal grants the food major access to four poultry processing facilities in Thailand, one in the Netherlands and another in the UK. The company said the deals builds on its growth strategy to “expand offerings of value-added protein in global markets”. The vertically integrated poultry operations in Thailand include a feed mill, hatchery, breeder farms and contract growing operations supplying live birds for the four poultry processing facilities. The processing locations in the Netherlands and the UK are supported by in-house innovation capabilities for developing further-processed chicken products for retail and foodservice customers throughout Europe. Products are sold under Grabits, Hot ‘N’ Kickin’Chicken, Speedy Pollo and the Sadia brands, in addition to key customer-owned brands.© Shutterstock/iomisJohn Lynam with Julian Seymour from HBAN © Shutterstock/AYDIN OZON© Shutterstock/Lukasz Szwaj© Shutterstock/Tatiana Volgutova04-11.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2019 12:00 Page 5Food & Drink International 9www.fdiforum.net7–9 May 2019 Palexpo, GenevaShaping the food industryfor optimal health through science and innovationSource innovativeDiscover productMeetDo business withproducts & ingredientsdevelopment solutionstechnical experts1,200+ global suppliersREGISTER NOW SAVE €150BE HERE.
