Incorporating an open frame that uses multi- angled surfaces and minimal welds, as well as quick removable covers, RUN-WET follows some of the EHEDG principles by assisting to reduce excess water and cleaning chemicals that typically pool on surfaces. This helps prevent the risk of corrosion and the accumulation of bacteria that could potentially contaminate foods. Motors, lamp and sounder, controls and enclosed pneumatics, are all high-pressure and high-temperature wash-down proof to IP69K ingress rating. And with no drying time required following cleaning, the immediate start functionality will be of interest to fast-paced food manufacturing and processing facilities. Further considerations included bearings, PEC’s, test switches and the bin lock monitor, all of which have been designed away from the surface to provide open access for thorough cleaning. Dundee Gin select new environmental presentation Responding to the huge increase in demand for gin-based products, world renowned Dundee Gin have worked with Bell Packaging to deliver a new environmental solution for its packaging. The Dundee Gin range comes in several flavours including Marmalade, Summer Fruits, Dundee Cake (50cl bottles) and White Dry Gin and “Old Tom” Honey & Spice (70cl bottles). All flavours are also available in 5cl miniatures. Head Taster Peter Menzies met Bell at last years Scottish Speciality Foods Fair in Glasgow and comments: “I remember the chap from Bell coming on to our stand. Being honest we had a complete nightmare with packaging and it was refreshing to find a company who was enthusiastic, positive and with a willingness to resolve our problems.” “Within 2 weeks they have produced a range of alternatives using folding carton, PET, Polypropylene and recycled Retran®. The Dundee range is very colourful so a transparent presentation really enhances the product on shelf. “Our customers had asked for a combination pack and for this Bell sampled a duo, trio and 5-bottle set all using the same footprint. This means we can buy in small quantities with no tooling and very fast delivery.” The end cap solution provided excellent protection to the bottles – this is moulded in a low-density polythene which is 100% recyclable. To launch the presentation, it was decided to keep the packaging plain which enabled Dundee to customise the finished packs using printed labels and inserts. When showing the packs to their clients Dundee Gin saw another opportunity. In August 2019, they launched their 50cl bottle presented in a Retran tube. This design incorporates the standard end cap on the base which gives excellent protection and a flat lid which is easy to secure and offers the ideal area for advertising. In collaboration with CSB, Pivka sought to establish an all-encompassing digitisation and optimisation solution. This involved the combination of an ERP system and a buffer inventory to create a perfect balance throughout the push and pull of production. On each line a CSB-Rack workstation, which combines automated data capture for weighing, pricing and labelling in a single operation, ensures maximum transparency of operations through online communication with the ERP system in order to provide staff with the relevant data for order processing. At the same time, all data originating in production are transferred directly to the ERP system. This real time data flow, with information available at the touch of a button, enables managers to keep track of activities, and provides intelligent business management, covering areas such as inventory consumption, sales figures and production volumes. WMH adds to stacking solutions portfolio Western Mechanical Handling UK (WMH) has added to its portfolio of stacking solutions with the completion of a stacking and packing conveyor system for a large European bakery. The system is designed to handle up to 15,000 individual frozen pancakes per hour exiting a freezing tunnel and feeding stacks of product to two wrapping lines. The system provides a continuous flexible solution feeding product to two stacking units in parallel. To ensure seamless operation the system was designed to incorporate a third stacking head which will move automatically into position in the event of either of the stackers suffering a product jam or other failure. The stacking system was designed to fit a single size pancake and uses a servo controlled pneumatically actuated jaw arrangement to provide a high-speed stacking motion. “We are very happy with this new development which provides a high-speed stacking solution for lines where products are continuous with no variation in size,” said a spokesman for WMH. Unilever will no longer advertise food & drinks to children Consumer goods giant, Unilever, has announced that it will no longer market foods and beverages to children. According to the London-based company, the new marketing and advertising principles are designed to “help parents, caregivers and kids make informed choices about the food and drinks they buy and to address the rise of social media, and the vast increase in products on sale”. By the end of 2020, Unilever has committed to stop marketing and advertising foods and beverages to children under the age of 12 in traditional media, and below 13 via social media channels. Facilitating this, the company is implementing “strict controls” concerning the placement and content of its ads and, moreover, won’t be using any influencers, celebrities or social media stars who primary appeal to children under the age of 12. It will also be limiting its use of cartoon characters on food and beverage packaging. Although Unilever admits that cartoon characters will still be seen on “some” of its point-of-sale materials, it said they will only be used for products with “a specific nutritional profile”. The implementation will be led by Unilever’s ice cream business, Wall’s, which owns brands including Max, Paddle Pop and Twister. It is becoming the first global ice cream brand with a ‘Responsibly Made for Kids’ promise. This promise is based on three pillars, designed to help parents and caregivers when choosing products for their children: Responsibly Communicated, Responsibly Sold and Responsibly Developed. © Shutterstock/kikovic © Shutterstock/LightField Studios 04-09.qxp_Layout 1 25/02/2020 12:15 Page 3news Food & Drink International 7 www.fdiforum.net Danone & Microsoft partner to accelerate AI in food, agriculture Danone and Microsoft have partnered to support and nurture the use of artificial intelligence in the food and agriculture sectors. Greater visibility with next-generation freezer doors The new glass door system from SCHOTT that promotes sales in store relies on a particularly thin and elegant design of the door and frame profiles to improve the visibility of the goods. As a result, SCHOTT Termofrost® Slimline offers a much larger display area and therefore enables faster orientation in the frozen food department. Compared to previous doorframe systems, the visual interruptions are reduced by half. “A good view of products and thus quick orientation at the retail shelves are essential triggers for sales in the food trade,” explains Dietmar Nilles, Sales Manager Food Display at SCHOTT. “We completely revised the frame technology of glass door systems for freezer cabinets intending to provide an enhanced view of the goods. Our new system not only looks much better but also consumes much less energy.” Freezer cabinets, therefore, also benefit from the new glass door system in terms of energy efficiency.
