Machine operators must choose the correct type of lubricant to withstand typical operating conditions found in meat processing plants, such as excess heat, humidity and water, as well as adopt best lubrication practices. Using the incorrect lubricant can necessitate the early replacement or repair of equipment, or at worst cause sudden failure to a machine, thus ceasing operations. Lubricants have to be able to withstand the demanding conditions while maximising equipment performance, efficiency and productivity. To this end, synthetic lubricants offer a better solution than mineral oils, which often compromise some functionality and quality aspects in order to comply with food safety regulations. Winkworth’s UTS provides businesses with an affordable mixer solution, working on the premise that low cost does not have to mean low quality. Available in either a 100L or 240L capacity, and with short lead times, the competitively priced UTS operates off a simple single phase supply, providing a food-grade, hand-loading and hand-discharge, versatile solution. Easy to maintain and with low running costs, Winkworth has added a 5-year mechanical warranty as part of the deal, making the complete package an attractive option for those looking to upscale their output. For further information on the UTS range, or any other product in their portfolio, contact Winkworth on +44 (0)1256 305 600 or email info@mixer.co.uk Compact, high-speed and precise: Mettler-Toledo’s new x-ray inspection system for small, single-pack products Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection has launched a new x-ray inspection system, the X34C, that is designed specifically for the detection of contaminants in small, individual packaged products at high-speed. The X34C is based on three key design principles of compactness, high-speed and precision: • Compact footprint: the system has a footprint of just 700mm in length, which includes an integrated reject, meaning it can be installed into production lines where space is at a premium. • High-speed capabilities: the X34C can operate at 120 metres per minute, making it possible to keep product inspection aligned with many high-speed flow- wrapping machines and pack sealers used in the confectionery sector for packing individual products. • Precise performance: the optimised focal distance of the 0.4mm diode detector and 100W Optimum Power Generator maximises the probability of detecting small contaminants and helps reduce the False Reject Rate. Because the power and contrast levels of these components are automatically optimised for each application, the system does not always need to run at its full 100W output, delivering power savings. MicroSalt develops a low-sodium salt. The product’s key feature is its small salt particles about one hundred times smaller than typical table salt, that use a large surface area-to-volume ratio to generate a salty taste while using significantly less salt. The expansion of MicroSalt is driven by a major new deal with the firm’s Mexican distribution partner FXM. If MicroSalt becomes widely used, the company believes it can reduce excess sodium consumption in the population. Clifford Gross, CEO, Tekcapital, said: “MicroSalt is already providing its low sodium salt products in the U.S. and Mexico and food companies in South America, the UK and Japan are currently evaluating MicroSalt for potential inclusion in their snacks. Our goal is to expand MicroSalt sales globally over the next three years.” Crespel & Deiters Group acquires extrusion specialist ECP The Crespel & Deiters Group, a leading producer of wheat-based solutions, has completed the integration of Extruded Cereal Products B.V. Stephen Langstaff, business development manager, packaging, at Innovia Films explains: “With the drive towards simplified packaging formats, and the need to develop mono material structures, we developed this cast polypropylene film to act as an inner sealing layer. This low temperature sealing film when laminated to other polypropylene films, such as our Propafilm™ CHS BOPP film with improved thermal resistance and shrinkage properties, creates an ideal structure for pouches.” Propacast™ KF is available as a 30, 50 and 70 micron film which has a wide heat seal range. It offers good coefficient of friction and anti-block properties which ensures easy processing on a range of packaging machines. KF has been corona treated on one side to ensure suitable adhesion during lamination. Langstaff said: “This development will enable better recyclable formats to be created, ensuring circularity of flexible packaging.” For more information visit www.innoviafilms.com Nutrition company launches sustainability programme to support milk suppliers Kerry, the taste and nutrition company, has launched a €6 million dairy sustainability programme which will support the acceleration of science-backed sustainability actions and best practices across farms in Ireland. Over 3,000 farm families will benefit from the initiative which will provide technical and financial support to the company’s milk suppliers to help them transition to more sustainable farming practices. As a result of these changes it is expected that there will be a significant reduction in carbon and ammonia emissions, improvements in water quality and biodiversity. Pat Murphy, CEO of Kerry’s Dairy Business, said: “Consumers globally want to consume food in a more sustainable way and it is important to examine how we can deliver dairy in a better way for people and the planet. Our Beyond the Horizon sustainability strategy sets out ambitious targets and our dairy business is committed to supporting our milk suppliers in the adoption of sustainable actions.” Major chocolate companies failed in pledge to end deforestation, says new study More than four years after the high-profile launch of the Cocoa and Forests Initiative (CFI), Africa’s top cocoa-producing nations continue to see huge areas of forest being destroyed to make room for cocoa production, according to a new data analysis by Mighty Earth. Sweet Nothings: How the Chocolate Industry has Failed to Honour Promises to End Deforestation in Cocoa Supply Chains reveals that, even after the industry published action plans in 2019, Côte d’Ivoire lost 19,421 hectares of forest within cocoa growing regions and Ghana lost 39,497 hectares. This amounts to a combined area equivalent to the size of the city of Madrid. “This report unwraps the unsavoury side of the cocoa industry and shows the urgent need to break the link between chocolate products and deforestation,” said Glenn Hurowitz, CEO of Mighty Earth, the global advocacy organization working to defend a living planet. “Chocolate companies like Nestlé, Hershey’s, Mondelez and Mars need to stop making empty promises and start working together with governments in the CFI to establish an open and effective joint deforestation monitoring mechanism this year.” Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are estimated to have lost 80% to 90% of their forested area over the last few decades, in large part to make way for cocoa farms. Through a combination of satellite data analysis and on-the-ground field investigations, Mighty Earth has uncovered evidence of ongoing tropical forest clearance for cocoa. This includes deforestation in designated protected areas that provide vital habitats for endangered wildlife – such as chimpanzees and pygmy hippos. These forests are also critical carbon sinks, vital for slowing both the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. © stock.adobe.com/hiddenhallow © stock.adobe.com/GarkushaArt © stock.adobe.com/Emil 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/02/2022 10:20 Page 3Food & Drink International 7 www.fdiforum.net news CSM Ingredients acquires specialist in the field of natural food-tech ingredients CSM Ingredients, held by investment companies of Investindustrial VII L.P.
