Depending on the type of layers and the machineequipment, the palletiser can provide an output up to 150 layers or1400 containers per hour.Robotic palletising is becoming increasingly popular where it canbe introduced, such as the snacks manufacturer Pacepacker hasassisted in bringing their palletising in-house. The solution was afour-axis FANUC M-410, initially integrated onto one of thepacking lines and fed by two separate production lines resulting ina combined output of 1000 boxes per hour.Chris Sumner, Managing Director at FANUC UK say, “Therobots were pre-programmed with a menu of different variationsand recipes suited to the company’s needs so that the FANUCcould handle multiple box sizes with very little manual interfacing.Manual palletising is a labour intensive process which can provideinconsistent pack quality due to human error. By automating thisprocess the FANUC M-410 robots consistently create an accurateand uniform neat stack of boxes while enabling our customer tomake better use of their staff in other areas of production.”Hygiene is of course of immense importance when it comes tohandling and storage. Companies such as Teknomek specialise increating stainless steel storage solutions and at the recent Foodexshow they illustrated the various options they have provided forthe food and drink sector. They are enabling companies to meetthe highest standards and ensuring there is virtually no chance ofcontamination during this stage of the supply chain.Scheme such as the RTITB Operator ofthe Year award are emphasising the highstandards in the sector18-21:Layout 1 24/3/14 08:07 Page 3Food & Drink International 21www.fdiforum.netHANDLING & STORAGEGoplasticpallets.comsets the standard forpallets in the Europeanbeverage industryThe beverage industrybenefits from the customised pallet solutionsGoplasticpallets.com has to offer. The CABKA-IPS, BPPi9 (BeveragePool Pallet), a solid and strong (1200 x 1000mm) pallet manufacturedwith gas-assist low pressure injection technology, has been beenexclusively developed for the beverage industry. Internal cavitiesensure pallets are not only rigid, but lighter. The BPP i9’s anti-slip strips and grommets ensure firm and safehandling of beveragecontainers and, because of itsintegratedreinforcementprofiles and theanti-slip stripson the top deck, this versatileindustrial pallet is ideal for handling heavy loads(dynamic loads up to 1,500kg and a static load of 7,000kg).Extra wide openings between blocks make the pallets particularlyeasy to handle and protect them from damage. The BPP i9 comes onsix runners as standard and can hold an impressive 1,500kg in highracking systems. The BPP i9 was developed for the Dutch Dranken Pallet Beheerpallet pool, which is already successfully putting 400,000 of them touse. The BPP i9 (polyethylene) pallets are particularlyenvironmentally friendly because they use 100% recycled plastic andare themselves completely recyclable.Used by international brewing companies worldwide, the Cabka-IPS Keg S9 plastic (1210 x 1110mm) pallet has been developed toaccomodate 50 litre kegs, with eight kegs fitting on a single pallet. The Keg S9 is also manufactured using gas-assist technology, makingit extremely strong and durable despite its low weight. To order a sample or arrange a visit from one of their plastic palletspecialists, visit www.goplasticpallets.com or call 01323 744057.The BPP i9 has been speciallydesigned for use in the beverageindustry. Anti-slip strips on the topdeck ensure that various drinkscontainers can be handled securely. The Keg S9 hasbeen developedto handle 50 litrekegs. Eight ofthese kegs fit ona single pallet.Companies such as Pilzalso help companies avoidflashpoints with a host ofsafety training courses which aimto give an understanding of thelatest legal and best practice requirementsfor the use and supply of continuous handling equipment. Eventssuch as these help companies comply with the European Directiveaffecting supply of equipment, the UK National Regulationsaffecting the use of equipment, risk assessment and reduction andguarding and safety-related control system requirements. Many, like the Pilz course, also focus on the specific C-standards forPackaging Machinery and Continuous Handling Equipment. To further improve standards, the Food Storage andDistribution Federation has introduced the IOSH ManagingSafely course to its training repertoire, reinforcing the Health andSafety Leadership Programme launched at the start of the year. The course is designed to educate line managers, supervisors andteam managers on all major health, safety and environmentalissues and provide the knowledge and practical experience neededto confidently manage key issues within their teams.Chris Sturman, CEO at FSDF, says, “One of the three targetsof the HSE Logistics strategy is competence and workerinvolvement, highlighting that individuals at all levels need toaccept their roles and responsibilities for health and safety. TheIOSH course reinforces this message and helps give managers thetools to implement high standards of health and safety throughouttheir working day.”These improved standards, along with innovative new solutions, are cutting downtime drastically and ensuring products are in safehands throughout the supply chain.Roboticpalletising isbecomingincreasingly popularwhere it can beintroduced18-21:Layout 1 24/3/14 08:07 Page 422 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netSEAFOOD INDUSTRYDue to its time-sensitive nature andoverall reliance on freshness, it is perhapswithin seafood that the food and drinkindustry invests most in hygiene and foodsafety. With levels of toxins or impuritiesneeding to be identified and conditions tobe kept to a high level of cleanliness it’sno surprise to find stringent levels ofsafety adhered to.Investment is indeed in evidence. SGS,for example, recently installed a new ISO17025 accredited Food Laboratory inFairfield, New Jersey to meet growingdemand for food testing services and thelikes of Neogen have seen a step up in theuse of testing kits. Michael Zhu, Vice President FoodNorth America for SGS says, “Food safetyissues are never far from the headlines, increasing demand for food testing SGS’investment establishes reliable third partytesting facilities in New Jersey, providingthe northeast region with easy access tofast, efficient, reliable food safetyservices.” SGS now offers a comprehensiverange of food testing services tomanufacturers located in severalnearby markets in the USA,including the East Coastseafood industry, as well asNortheast and Mid-Atlanticmeat and dairy processors, importers and growers. Neogen’s focus has alwaysbeen on effective testing, butspecific to the seafood industry, their validation and approval ofANSR for Salmonella last yearhas come as welcome news. This new validation follows the kit’sinitial approval by AOAC Internationaland testifies to Neogen’s dedication toincreasing its line of accredited pathogentest kits for accurate and rapid resultswith minimal steps for users. The ANSR system uses an innovativeisothermal DNA amplification processand fluorescent molecular beacontechnology for detection of the pathogentarget. Neogen’s Steve Chambers says, “TheNF validation of ANSR for Salmonellawill allow Neogen access to a number ofEuropean markets, and beyond, where theuse of the test requires an accreditationstudy carried out according to theAFNOR standard.“The ANSR for Salmonella system cutsthe wait time for definitive results, withonly ten minutes of reaction timefollowing sample enrichment. Othercommercially available molecularamplification tests require up to threehours of reaction time.” In the NF validation study, ANSR forSalmonella was found to be an effectiveprocedure for the detection of salmonellain seafood as well as meat, poultry, dairyand vegetables. From January this year, theformal adoption of the reformed EU Common Fisheries Policy hasbeen in effect - and welcomed by the Food and Drink Federation’sSeafood Group.Putting in place the necessary legislative framework, the policymarks a major turning point in setting EU fisheries management onthe path to a more sustainable future, enabling it to conserve andrebuild a vital renewable food source for the benefit of consumersnow and in the future. The lengthy negotiating process took place last year against abackground of growing public concern at the effects of overfishingin European waters and the hugely wasteful practice of discards. The Federation worked closely with UK Ministers and a range ofstakeholders, including the retail sector, to argue the case forradical action.Andrew Kuyk, FDF Director of Sustainability, says, “FDFSeafood Group members have long recognised that increasingsustainability is essential to securing the raw materials we need andto delivering the economic and social value which properlymanaged fisheries can provide for everyone.”With this much focus on the groundwork in seafood, theindustry looks set to enjoy a prosperous future. With standards setthis high in fishing, it’s paving the way for the industry to maintainlevels of success for the rest of the industry. With new productsemerging all the time, it’s an exciting time to be in seafood.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/HOLBOXResin flooringprimed for thefood industryResin systems are quickly becoming the flooringsolution of choice in the food sectorA successful contract withone of the country’s mostfamous markets has helpedput resin flooring firmly onthe map as the go-to solutionfor food and drinkenvironments. The stayingpower of Resin Surfaces Limited’s Resuthane product has beenshowcased at Canary Wharf’s Billingsgate Market, as it continues toperform six years after installation.Billingsgate is the largest inland fish market in the UK and isserved by almost every port in the country, averaging sales of 25,000tonnes of fish and fish products each year. Covering thirteen acres, the ground floor of the building comprises a large trading hall with98 stands and thirty shops. The large volume of people and product moving through thecomplex made durability important when choosing the most suitableflooring, but it also needed to be food-safe, hygienic and easy toclean.Resuthane TG69 was installed in 2007 in a Forest Green colour.Martin Wroe, commercial director at RSL, says, “Resuthane hasquickly become one of our most popular products and was theobvious choice because it is robust, easy to maintain and has a greatfinish. Not only is the floor fresh and modern, it delivers 100% onhygiene and durability. The fact that it still looks and performs as itdid six years ago is testament to why food and drink businesses arechoosing Resuthane for their floors.”For more information, contact RSL bycalling 0161 483 1232, emailinginfo@resinsurfaces.co.uk or visitingwww.resinsurfaces.co.uk.22-24:Layout 1 24/3/14 08:08 Page 3on and off, a successful coderhas to be able to cope, whatever the particulars ofyour production line. For example, drinksmanufacturer Fruitapeel hastaken advantage of thebenefits of the Linx 5900continuous ink jet printerfor coding onto bottles offruit juices and smoothiesranging in size from250ml to 2l. The PE caps areprinted with a two-line messagecomprising a use by date and batch codeand the coding speed is up to 92 bottlesper minute. One further benefit is that it enjoys acost-effective and predictable maintenanceprogramme, and Fruitapeel can takeadvantage of a range of inks, includingremovable inks for internal traceabilityand process tolerant inks, which are ableThe bottles themselves are now often ofhugely varied sizes and shapes and madeof new, more environmentally friendlymaterials. Yet as well as offeringadditional convenience for consumers, they also have to ensure the product iskept secure throughout the supply chain. One major issue in the sector now isthat of accuracy. The correct amount ofproduct must be included to avoidincorrect labelling and product giveaway, but the challenge is to ensure that thiscan be attained without sacrificing speedof production. Happily, the latesttechnology does mean that this isfrequently the case.Marking and coding solutions haveparticular value in this regard andcompanies such as Linx have been able toassist companies in ensuring continuedproduction. One example of these changescomes from Thailand, where the juicedrinks, teas and sports drinks sector isforecast to grow by 4% per annum overthe next four years, with the marketshare of PET bottles to grow by 6% asconsumers increasingly recognise thematerial as more convenient and lighterthan glass, and more hygienic thanHDPE. Pack Leader’s range of machines, for example, can be standalone or integrated into a line forlabelling a variety of container sizes, cartons andbottle shapes. Advanced Dynamicsshowcased these machines as Foodex as they are thesole UK distributor of these machines. One area that has become increasingly importantfor producers recently has been that of aseptic fillingwhich offers increased accuracy and cleanliness.Ampack, for example, have launched the KF 2/4Ampack have launchedthe KF 2/4 carousel fillingmachine for the asepticfilling and closing ofbottles and cups25-27:Layout 1 24/3/14 09:27 Page 2Food & Drink International 27www.fdiforum.netBOTTLING & FILLINGcarousel filling machine for the aseptic filling and closing of bottlesand cups. The machine fills liquid products, including those withhigher viscosity, and can reach speeds of up to 10,000 bottles perhour for 200 millilitre bottles. The carousel filler offers greater flexibility as it enables quickerchangeovers between formats and pack styles, such as bottles andcups, in a variety of sizes. This can be attributed to its servo motorconcept, which facilitates adjustment to different formats, as wellas to its gripper system that feeds and inserts bottles into themachine’s transportation system and outfeeds the filled and closedbottles. For quality assurance, the machine features a dosingsystem by inductive flow meter and a unique filling valve. Therotary valve design means the filler allows fruit, cereals or pulps topass through. When it closes, its sharp edge cuts the particlesinstead of crushing them, avoiding dripping and preventing anyhygiene problems. Compared with mechanical versions, the servodriven stations provide additional flexibility and enable a safe andsimple format change via recipe controlled actions.A further innovation has come from the arrival of the AsepticPiston Doser from GEA Procomac, which is capable of dosingbeverages with pieces of fruit. This is something that’s been in thepipeline for a few years following the arrival to the Far East, inparticular, of beverages containing large dimension cereals, fruitpieces or aloe vera. The challenge was to fill those new productswhile maintaining the integrity of the fruit pieces.A Piston Doser itself couldn’t generally be used in this contextas it isn’t aseptic – the containers are hot filled, or sterilised byautoclaving. However GEA Procomac built a pilot plant and hasrun extensive tests using a range of products such as peaches, chestnuts and even walnut kernels, with different carrier liquids ofvarious viscosities. The machine has now been piloted andcustomers should begin to see it arriving in factories across theUSA and further afield. There are additional factors to considerregarding bottling and filling. One aspect thatmay not be so apparent, certainly to the nakedeye, is that of the potential flashpoints causedby peracetic acid. Peracetic acid is commonlyused in the bottling industry as a sterilant, butit gives off a strong vinegar-like odour whichcan affect worker productivity. Not only is thesmell bothersome but the effects of over-exposure to PAA are quite serious, such assevere nose bleeds and breathing difficulties, and employers are now being urged to ensurethat their workers are not exposed to PAAabove 0.4 ppm, calculated as a rolling timeweighted over fifteen minutes. In the UK, a1-cbiss have been providing thetechnology for continuously monitoringairborne peracetic acid to three major bottlingplants. The ChemDAQ Steri-Trac, which theysupply, can monitor for PAA and has relayoutputs to alarms and extraction units to makethe area safer. The increased speed of bottling and fillinghas brought about new challenges but the latesttechnology is certainly making a difference –ensuring accuracy without excessive downtime.www.a1-cbiss.com+44(0)151 666 8300 | sales@a1-cbiss.com cbiss.a1-+44(0)151 666 8300 | sales@a1- o.o.cbiss EXPOSUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE TO PERACETICTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC ACID? There is a growingconsumer preference for prepared foodscontaining particulates that are regular insize, texture and flavour. This obviously brings challenges to theindustry who must be able to ensure thesevery delicate ingredients can still beapparent in the finished product, whilealso avoiding any problems with accuracyand recipe formulation.Hence the importance of investing ineffective mixing and blending equipmentand weighing and traceability solutions.Companies such as Advanced Engineeringcertainly offer flexibility in this regard.Their range of mixers includes top entrybatch, sealed bearing, bottom entry, singlestage and three stage inline high shearrotor stator mixers and fluid mixers.
