Untilrecently, the majority of the firm’s cooling systemsoperated with synthetic refrigerant R22, whichbecame subject to a ban in Europe from January2015. Pinneys approached cooling expert StarRefrigeration to provide support in developing anR22 phase out strategy.A critical part of the Pinneys R22 phase out strategywas the conversion of a cold store, where frozen product isheld at -25°C before further processing. Star designed and installed anAzanefreezer system, an air-cooled, ammonia refrigeration plant for cold storage applications.Azanefreezer operates with a very low charge of natural refrigerant ammonia and features Star’slow pressure receiver and high efficiency EC condenser fan control technology. Azanefreezerdelivers efficiencies up to 20% higher than a traditional HFC refrigeration system.Radnor Hills launchesPRO ISO with Pro AthleteSupplementationRadnor Hills Mineral Water has collaborated withPro Athlete Supplementation, a company created byelite sports nutritionist Jon Williams and OlympicGold medallist Darren Campbell, to bring to market anew isotonic sports drink called PRO ISO. Maximumperformance has been achieved to reducenatural gas consumption and significantlyboost energy generation on site.SUEZ conducted an in-depth review of thesite facilities and identified problematicdesign flaws in the original anaerobicdigestion system that resulted in large scalewaste of green energy. Following the review,Ondeo redesigned the biogas production system to rectify faults in the original design. This hasenabled the biogas to be used in a CHP engine to cost-effectively generate electricity for the site.Jon Waller, Contracts Manager at SUEZ environnement, says, “Similarly to many other manufacturing facilities, this site wasn’t optimising its biogasproduction, and losing out on significant benefits. SUEZ has improved the effluent treatment plant system substantially, and it is now considered the ‘go to’brewery in the Western European region for biogas utilisation best practice.”Food & Drink International 5www.fdiforum.netAward-winning innovation fromTheMagicTouchAt this year’s Trophex, TheMagicTouchwere awarded the prestigious BestInnovation accolade for the secondsuccessive year. Usually located inwash-down areas, these small valvescommonly control the flow of high puritywater in closed loop systems. Because ofthe valves’ small size, conventional stainlesssteel interlocks are usually too big andheavy. To solve this problem, Smith Flow Control,a specialist in valve interlocking equipment, has developed a new interlock for use withdiaphragm valves in these and otherhygiene-critical applications. The new interlock uses a simple, rotational Ellis lock mechanism that is ideal for this applicationdue to its compact design. It has an Acetal plastic body, which is lightweight and well suited for usewith small diaphragm valves. It is also highly resistant to moisture, solvents and many other neutralchemicals. Despite this, it is tough, hardwearing and has a high resistance to repeated impacts. The Ellis key has a spring-loaded rubber seal, preventing water ingress during washdown orsterilisation procedures.Olivo ensure Budgensnever stands stillOlivo portable insulated containers are ensuringBudgens can make best use of an innovative multi-temperature logistics system.Steve Goodall, operations manager at theBudgens distribution centre in Wellingborough, says the company never stands still. Thesolution was to turn the frozen temperaturecompartments in the trailers into warm ones byreversing the operation of the refrigeration unitsand use Olivo portable insulated containers forfrozen produce. This also introduced a furtherdegree of flexibility into their distribution schedules.Steve Goodall is very pleased this system isworking for Budgens and the way in which theOlivo containers stand up to hard usage.Adande gels with CarpigianiFoodservice refrigerationspecialist Adande has teamed upwith ice cream equipmentmanufacturer Carpigiani to offer arange of dedicated dessertworkstations.
