It willbe implementing in two years’ time, giving drinksmanufacturers the opportunity to adapt and change theirrecipes. Many drinks companies, however, are currentlyconsidering legal action to combat the tax. While othersare decrying its effectiveness in combatting obesity levelsand how it will affect lower income households. Some ofits most fervent supporters, on the other hand, are hailingthe move as a significant step in the fight againstchildhood obesity. The tax levy is aimed only at high-sugar drinks, particularly fizzy drinks. Pure fruit juices and mil-based drinks will be excluded and the smallest producers will have an exception from the scheme. There will be two bands, the first for total sugar content above 5g per 100 millilitres while thesecond, higher band, will be for drinks with more than 8g per 100 millilitres. Analysis suggests theywill be levied at 18p and 24p per litre respectively. One practical step in achieving this progress is theuse of thinner sleeve materials. Sleeves may be gettingsmaller, but companies in this competitive market cannotafford to eliminate them altogether, since sleeves provecrucial in lending on-shelf impact and a premium look. However, this development presents a technicalchallenge, since the growing variety of sleeve shapesand sizes makes it tricky to print the date code so thatit’s positioned correctly wrapped around the finishedproduct. The RF-Lite offline date marking system from Rotechis a simple, low-cost solution that overcomes all thesechallenges. The system takes flat cardboard sleevesfrom a hopper, feeds them through an inkjet printer sothey can be date-coded and stacks them again ready foruse.
