< PreviousWATER TREATMENT40 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netShining a light on emerging pathogensatg UV Technology, the UK’s leading manufacturer of ultravioletwater disinfection systems, has developed a range of UV disinfectionunits to meet the needs of the food and beverage industry. Waterborne micro-organisms are responsible for adverse effects onflavour, colour, odour and shelf life of products and, of course, potential health risks to consumers. A number of emerging pathogens, like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, are showing increased resistance tochlorine disinfection. As a result, the food and beverage industry istightening its already stringent microbiological safety and quality standards for process water, product water and sugar solutions. UV systems from atg are entirely chemical-free, low maintenance and cost-effective and can be used in a range of process applications, fromCIP rinsing to liquid sugar. Unlike alternative methods of disinfection, UV leaves no contaminating toxins or residues and there is no change tothe chemical composition, colour, taste, odour or pH of the fluid being treated. For more information, visit www.atguv.com.consistently in order to keep water safe,as well as wasting no water. Using the correct and consistentdosage, UV treatment has been provento deactivate the entire rogue’s galleryof microorganisms attributed tospoilage – including viruses, bacteriaand moulds. In a triumph for health andsafety, the technology was also shownto switch-off microorganisms resistantto pasteurisation. The food industry welland truly has a silver bullet on its hand –reliable, cost effective and efficient. Waterborne organisms are one ofmany of the industry’s bugbears, wherethey are responsible for adverselyaffecting the smell, taste andfunctionality of food and beverageproducts. Although a company mightnot reclaim its wastewater, leaving ituntreated leaves their facilities andproducts vulnerable to contamination.Despite its competitive and attractivecompetences, the UV industry is alsoawash with innovation. Hanovia’s New‘Ultraviolet Energy Optimisation’(UVEO) system technology, forexample, takes advantage of anoptimised hydraulic design to provideup to 60% improvement in thetreatment capacity over conventionalmedium pressure UV systems. Thismeans reduced running costs withoutcompromising on bio-security. A primebenefit is that treatment is performedwith just a single medium pressure UVlamp, eliminating the need to install abigger system with multiple lamps athigher flows. This saves on up frontcapital costs and lifetime spares costs. From its UK-based manufacturingfacility, atg UV’s specialist in-housetechnical design team and engineerscan professionally tailor UV disinfectionsystems to suit individual customerneeds. The success of UV disinfection iswholly dependent on ensuring that theapplied dose is always enough todisarm the target microorganisms. atg’sUV systems closely match the UnitedStates Environmental ProtectionAgency (US EPA) guidelines forequipment validation – the standardgenerally adopted for UV disinfectionsystems in municipal drinking water. The reclamation and re-use ofindustrial wastewater is integral tocreating a truly closed-loop society, onein which an expanding population hasaccess to food and clean water. It’s notenough to simply process thiscontaminated liquid for disposal, butfinding new and innovative means ofputting it to use. Leftover industrialliquids are finding new leases of lifewhere before they may have simplybeen disposed of. It will constitute the five core sections ofKrones AG, Neutraubling, Germany: digitisation as the roof andsuperstructure, process, filling and packaging technologies, plusintralogistics, as the functional premises, and Lifecycle Serviceas the base, the solid foundation. In terms of machinery, the principal focus at the interpack willbe the Varioline packaging system, which has proved highlysuccessful in gaining widespread acceptance among bottlingand canning companies. Companies are frequently tasked withfirst placing individual containers in multipacks, and thenpacking these in suitable sales or secondary packaging. Thisnecessitates maximised flexibility. So by developing the Varioline as a responsively flexiblesolution, Krones has found the right answer for this job profile:here, a single machine replaces up to six conventional individualmachines with conveyors. With the Varioline, up to three-stagepackaging processes can be implemented with just a singlemachine. Space savings in the layout, reduced maintenanceoutlay and fewer operators are the logical consequences. Themodular Varioline kit consists of three units: cartoning module, feed module, and basic module, which can be combined to forma customised packaging system. This modularised constructionalso offers flexibility for the future. The machine handles up to52,000 containers per hour. The Belgian specialty brewery De Brabandere is one of morethan 30 bottlers who have already benefited from the Varioline’sversatility. It bottles 23 different beers, and thanks to theVarioline produces up to 34 different packages – and all of it ona single line. Thesecan include green energy generationfrom bio-degradable residues orbiomass. On-site anaerobic digestion(AD) of degradable residues will supplybiogas for factory use, reducing relianceon fossil fuels and cutting emissions.Bioenergy from biogas or biomass heatgeneration are part of the transition to amore circular economy. With the food industry becomingincreasingly concerned about its impacton the environment, there is anopportunity to replace energy intensiveaerobic treatment solutions for thedisposal of energy rich processresidues, with on-site anaerobic plants.Growing interest in the benefits of amore circular economy will changebusiness models created when the levelof resource use was of less concern. The circular economy in the food anddrink industry; on-farm solutions furtherback the food chain; and energyefficiency options, are all being talkedabout at All-Energy 2017 in the multi-stream free-to-attend conference.Solutions are on display in the majorbusy exhibition – the 17th in the annualseries – with around 400 exhibitingcompanies, which attracts totalattendance of around 7,000.On-site bioenergy will enable thefood and beverage industry to reduceits environmental footprint and inaddition to generating electricity fromthe biogas in a combined heat andpower (CHP) engine, or heat from aboiler, gas can be upgraded to bio-methane, to supply the gas grid or foruse as vehicle fuel. One of Britain’s most advanced on-site AD plants, located at First Milk’sAspatria creamery, is the largest on acreamery site in Europe. This projectand other on-site bio-energy projectswill be featured in a session on 10 Maythat will explore opportunities for thefood industry. The session will bechaired by Richard Gueterbock, Directorof Clearfleau, one of the UK’s leadingon-site bio-energy technology suppliers, who will provide a scene-settingintroduction on the circular economyand bioenergy – particularly onindustrial projects and food/drink.He said: “Unwanted processingresidues are a resource that can beused to generate energy on site, in aprocess that minimizes off-site disposaland cuts fossil fuel consumption.Disposal costs associated with theseresidues are replaced with a revenuesource. More traditional aerobicsolutions use energy to achieve thesame result without generatingrenewable energy that can beharnessed by the industrial user. On sitedigestion enables a factory site toimprove resource use and supply up to30% of its energy needs.”Other speakers will be looking at‘Biomass – Right for your site?’,‘Bioenergy on a distillery site’ and ‘Howwe do it in Sweden’. This last, thanks toBengt Erik Lofgren of the SwedishPellet Association who points out that:“130 TWh out of 370 TWh of totalusage comes from biomass; and in thetransport sector, we are approaching20% renewable energy in the form ofbiodiesel, biogas and ethanol”.For more information and toregister for free online, visit www.all-energy.co.uk or email all-energy@reedexpo.co.uk.Don’t forget to stay up to date onTwitter via @AllEnergy.All-EnergyAll-Energy 2017 is the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition andconference, taking place 10 – 11 May at SEC in Glasgow.48-49_Layout 1 27/03/2017 09:07 Page 1Edina is a leading supplier, installerand maintenance provider forcombined heat and power (CHP),gas, and diesel power generationsolutions. As the sole distributor in the UK andIreland for market leading MWMengines, we can supply a single ormulti-generation configuration to suityour natural gas CHP plant andprovide mission critical standby dieselgeneration to support anyinfrastructure. We add value by delivering thecomplete project.
