Supply chain spotlight14 The food supply chain is becoming more complex, making traceability and maintaining efficiency more difficult. However, new technologies such as blockchain, AI and the Internet of Things are offering a solution. Cleaning and maintenance18 At every level of the food and drink supply chain there are stringent regulations put in place by government, European legislation and recommendations from the Food Standards Agency. Although covering everything from environmental emissions to product quality, one area that is most strictly controlled is hygiene. However, adhering to these hygiene levels isn’t always a simple matter. Slicing, dicing and cutting 22 If food producers are to keep up with demand, slicing, dicing and cutting equipment must be optimised and automized to ensure quality and consistency is maintained. Functional ingredients 26 Food producers have a responsibility and a key role to play in curbing the obesity crisis and its associated illnesses. Functional ingredients might just be the answer. Beverages30 The beverage industry is at a cross roads, a period of innovation and transformation as the wants and needs of consumers evolves and regulators crack down on ingredients lists and labelling. The company has once again been featured in the 10th annual Sunday Times International Track 200 league table - which ranks Britain’s mid-market private companies according to their international sales growth over the last two years. With operations in America and Australia and a network of 14 global distributors, Proseal has averaged an impressive 45.35% growth over the last two years. International sales reached £33.7 million in 2018. Director Steve Malone, who founded Proseal together with Robert Hargreaves, commented: “We recognised the importance of expanding our presence overseas early on, as we knew this would be critical to our continued growth and development. As a result, Proseal now has a presence on every continent except Antarctica.” An awards dinner will be held in May where leaders from the league table companies will receive their organisation’s ranked certificate. BD Foods and Adelphi – a match made in heaven Adelphi customer BD Foods create innovative sauces, dressings and more. In 2011, Adelphi were pleased to supply them with their Response Benchtop Filler. It is quick to assemble and clean, meaning that changing between products/containers is easy and production downtime is minimal. These time-saving factors are particularly important to Managing Director John Davis, who said: “BD Foods have found it more time-efficient to use Adelphi’s semi-automatic Response Benchtop Filler, than a fully automatic line. The higher production downtime when cleaning and changing the complete line meant that we were losing valuable filling time; not the case with the Response.” BD Foods now own eleven Response Benchtop Fillers, which they have mounted onto stainless steel trolleys for mobility. “We can adapt the layout of our machines and space as production demands,” said Mr Davis. “Every time we’ve moved away from the Response, we’ve had issues – you can quote me on that!” For more information, visit www.adelphi.uk.com.A.G Barr achieves world class AMIS Assessment within 2 Years A.G. Barr’s Milton Keynes site was first assessed using The AMIS Assessment in November 2016 and an improvement plan agreed. Following subsequent Assessments in 2017 and again in 2018, Milton Keynes has achieved ‘World-Class Performance’ using MCP’s new AMIS Journey within an impressive two-year period. As part of a planned Continuous Improvement Programme and a well-developed maintenance strategy, MCP were requested to support Asset Management and Maintenance Improvement across the site. The AMIS Journey (Asset Maintenance Improvement System), was facilitated by MCP Consulting Group and used to measure A.G. Barr’s asset maintenance performance on a consistent basis against a worldwide benchmark of peer group companies. Results show that the site is well above the soft drinks sector average for all the assessed sections, including general maintenance, cost management, productivity, materials management and training & safety. Majority of consumers in favour of carbon labelling The majority of consumers support the idea of carbon labelling on packaging, according to research from the Carbon Trust. Results from the YouGov study of more than 9,000 consumers in the US and Europe revealed that 66% of consumers confirm they would feel more positive about companies that can demonstrate they are making efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their products. Demand for carbon labelling is highest in Southern Europe, with the vast majority of respondents in Italy (85%) and Spain (80%) believing it is a good idea to use them on products. Despite the fact that findings show that carbon labelling attracts support from a wide base of consumers, the research highlights that a value-action gap continues to exist. More than half of respondents (52%) agreed that they do not generally think about the carbon footprint of a product before buying it. Though, a meaningful proportion of one-fifth (21%) disagree, thereby claiming that they do take this into account.Bell launch packaging recycling initiatives Following the outstanding success of Retran®, Bell Packaging has introduced an exciting new initiative to its range of recycled packaging. Retran® was introduced in 2018 with a minimum recycled content of 70% which comes from post-consumer waste. The product has been adopted by most Bell customers. Managing Director Peter Lennie said: “With no reduction in strength, the new film has excellent optical clarity and the switch from the original Virgin PET formulation to the recycled version has been easy.” Bell have confirmed there is no impact on cost and the performance of the film in assembly is equal to normal production. An added advantage of Retran® is that it is suitable for kerbside collection and is 100% recyclable. The proposed streamlining on the types of plastic available is supported by Bell. To ensure that the packaging supplied by the company is easily identified Bell have introduced a number of initiatives. Diageo removes plastic packaging from beer packs in UK & Ireland Diageo is replacing the plastic packaging from its beer packs with sustainable alternatives. A £16 million investment will see the brewing giant remove plastic ring carriers and shrink wrap from multipacks of Guinness, Harp and Smithwick’s. The new packs will hit the shelf in Ireland from August 2019 and from Summer 2020 in Great Britain and all other export markets. Currently, under 5% of Diageo’s total packaging is plastic and this change will reduce Diageo’s plastic usage by over 400 tonnes annually – equivalent of removing 40 million 50cl plastic bottles from the world. The multi-can packs will be replaced by cardboard packs, which are sustainably sourced, recyclable and fully biodegradable. David Cutter, Diageo’s Chief Sustainability Officer and President, Global Supply & Procurement, said: “We have been working tirelessly to make our packaging more environmentally friendly and I’m thrilled with this outcome for Guinness and our other global beer brands.”news04-09.qxp_Layout 1 29/04/2019 09:33 Page 2Events organised byFREE TO ATTEND3rd - 4th July 2019, NEC Birmingham, UK www.biogastradeshow.comThanks to our sponsorsONE PLACE. As the company has grown and demand for their range increased, they soon found that production and hand filling jars was taking up most of their working week. They realised they needed to move away from ladling product into containers to a more efficient semi-automatic process. Following recommendations from other artisan producers in the industry, they approached Riggs Autopack to discuss a suitable filling machine for their products, kitchen area and budget. Following initial meetings, Riggs Autopack arranged for a no-obligation filling machine trial to take place at their premises; this proved to be invaluable to Peckish Kitchen as it was their first move into semi-automation. Following successful trials, Peckish Kitchen then placed an order with Riggs Autopack for a Series 3 semi-automatic filling machine. The use of recycled content is a critical part of DuPont Teijin Films’ circular economy strategy, and the upcycling of PET through the LuxCR™ process also marks an important step forward in the chemical recycling technology for the wider polyester industry. Initial commercial launches are planned in Q2 2019 across a range of packaging formats and will include high temperature food contact applications such as ready meal lidding and ovenable flow wrap structures. Although the initial focus is to provide a feedstock to DuPont Teijin Films’ own film manufacturing lines, feasibility studies are underway to see if the scope can be extended to include the external sale of polymer which would open up the technology to applications such as PET bottles and trays. All four cases relate to food products that have either reached, or have the potential to reach, the consumer. Many food companies use a wide range of magnetic separators and metal detectors to find and remove metal contamination. In 2018, Jordans Dorset Ryvita commissioned a magnetic separator audit of all the magnetic separators in their Poole facility. The review highlighted areas where magnets were no longer effective due to changes in the process and technology. Bunting Magnetics is one of the world’s leading suppliers of Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors. The European manufacturing headquarters are based in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, UK and they have an extensive overseas network of distributors and marketing agents.
