Rapid temperaturechanges like hot CIP or SIP,followed by chilled products, means pressure transmitters(particularly flush/hygienic) take awhile to recover from ‘sensortemperature shock’, with errorscausing delays and processcontrol problems. Now, a patented, world-firstinnovation from VEGA consigns this tohistory. The new ‘fast thermal reaction’system on CERTEC ceramic cells always maintains the correct measuredvalue. By mounting a temperature sensor directly to the back of the flush-mounting process diaphragm, it quickly detects the tiniest temperaturechange, eradicating thermal shock and increases temperaturemeasurement accuracy. The VEGABAR 80 series can also combine as electronic differentialpressure for level in pressurised vessels, as well as having an option tomeasure both pressure and product temperature via a single device/vesselconnection with twin signal outputs.Free workshop highlights need for accuracyand reliabilityThe need for highly accurate anddependable weighing technologythroughout the food industry will bethe focus of HBM’s workshop, whichis being held on Thursday 26th June,at the Williams Conference Centre inGrove, Oxfordshire. Every aspect of food production –from determining the amount of grainin silos through to ensuring the exactquantity of wine in a bottle – demands effective weighing solutions. HBM has a comprehensiverange of products to meet every requirement whether the demand is for continuous operation inhostile and potentially explosive atmospheres through to rapid packaging solutions. The event will focus on a number of different applications using HBM products along withdiscussions on weighing technology. The main presentations will look at the key principles ofweighing technology and, in addition, HBM will have a number of different products available. There will also be demonstrations. New rules for advertisementand distance selling are also included. On average it takes around three months to plan, design and sign off a new label, and with some leadingbrands it can take even longer. To help speed up theprocess of applying the necessary information, ICE hasdeveloped its CLARiTY software to give users greaterflexibility to make the required changes to labels. Although a large proportion of the legislation willaffect pre-printed label design the CLARiTY softwarecan specifically fulfil the regulation where it impacts onoverprinted information. 04-05:Layout 1 22/5/14 09:37 Page 1PPS East customers report increase in freshfish qualityOver six years, PPS East has receivedpositive feedback from fresh fish customersusing reusable plastic fish boxes forhygienic, safe handling of product. Itrecorded that a good percentage of freshfish packed into reusable plastic containers, arrived at its destination at a higher quality offreshness, compared with product carried intraditional thermal insulated boxes.Temperature controlled vehicles chill fresh fish by penetrating cold air through the plastic box walls, but in thermal insulated boxes, product showed higher temperature readings on arrival. Also, fishquality could be maintained higher as many PPS’s boxes are designed with drain holes, so that fish isnot laid in melted ice or its own fluid, which can speed up bacteria growth.Although results are favourable, PPS would acknowledge that there are additional factors to be considered when looking at advances in controlling bulkfish quality.New SICK PBSH pressure switchreduces hygienecostsThe new PBSH pressure switchfrom SICK’s IndustrialInstrumentation Division is designedspecifically for pressure controlapplications, achieving stringenthygiene standards and highproduction availability cost-effectively.The SICK PBSH combineshygienic stainless steel wetted partswith a heavy duty plastic housingfeaturing a bright, highly visibledisplay to provide direct indication ofprocess pressure. Suitable for saturatedor superheated steam, Spirax Sarco TR SteamMicroTurbines are available in twosizes, up to 700kW.A microturbine producing 300kWof electrical power can generate costsavings of more than £150,000 peryear. The greater the steamdemand, the faster the payback. Higher pressure steamdistributed from a boiler isconventionally lowered by a pressurereducing station, to match the needs of theheating or process application. With a Spirax SarcoTR Steam MicroTurbine, the steam is reduced to the required pressure as ittravels through the turbine, with the energy released by the pressure dropbeing used to generate electricity.
