Dueto a reassignment of the factory it was required for extra walls tobe built including rapid roll doors and fire roller shutter doors. AsKlimate and their parent company BID Group have been workingon this and other SCA sites for many years, it was natural thatthey would be considered for the work.Ian Smith, Project Engineer says, “Most high speed doors act insimilar ways but the reliability of the Klimate doors, coupled withthe response time offered by the company, made the choice a veryeasy one. The fact that they are very competitively priced is anadded bonus.”One area causing particular concern included a pedestrian routedirectly in front of a planned high speed door. This could havecaused many near misses between foot traffic and passing fork lifttrucks. However, Klimate were able to work with the client andother contractors to incorporate their door with a pedestriancrossing system, so when pedestrians were within the opening thedoor could not operate. Thanks to its effectiveness, the companyare now considering rolling out this system further. In total, this project included five Rapid Roll Doors and five FireRoller Shutter Doors, with three of each already being installedand a further two due as the project progresses. For more information on what Klimate can offer, visit www.klimate.co.uk.neighbouring packing area, sowe fitted a set of our ColdStop curtains. Tests on thesite showed they would get areturn on their investmentin just a few months, and wewere almost immediatelyinvited to quote for six more.”Ferndale estimate that they willrecoup their investment in six orseven months, because of the amountof money they are saving on our energy bills. For all the cash and environmental savings, however, the mostobvious requirement for refrigeration is to ensure the product itselfremains of a high standard throughout the entire production process.Products such as ice cream can often suffer thanks to fluctuatingtemperatures, altering its texture and appearance. While making surethe temperature is monitored at every stage of the process helps, themake-up of the product can also make a difference. To this end, emulsifier and stabilizer specialist Palsgaard havedeveloped Palsgaard IceTriple with the intention to help ice creammanufacturers maintain the consumer-friendly properties of theirlow-fat ice cream throughout the entire life of the product and itstransportation. Palsgaard IceTriple aims to tackles the problem ofheat shock which can often produce grainy, crystallised ice cream, especially when the recipe is reduced in fat.Palsgaard IceTriple offers excellent heat shock stability for icecream and, even in low fat formulations, heat shock sensitivity isreduced to a minimum. The key is uniform, fine air cell distributiontogether with greater control over ice crystal size during productionand storage of the ice cream. The combination of emulsifiers in thenew product series improves structure by influencing the interactionsbetween fat proteins and the fat/ice interface. It also has an improvedmelting profile thanks to the high quality of the emulsifiers.Introducing energy efficient principles into the refrigeration andcold storage sector is assisting food and drink companies in meetingtheir environmental obligations – but it’s also ensuring overheadsare coming down, excessive wastage is avoided and deliveries can bemade faster and more efficiently. Due to the difference in water content in the ambient air and the air in the cold store, problems with iceand frost accelerate when moisture loaded outdoor air enters the cold store. IceDry is the only dehumidifierthat has been developed especially for installation inside a cold store. The tough, cold environmentdemands new and special features created with the sole purpose of ensuring that the unit runs reliably andenergy efficiently.Installation is simple. IceDry is positioned close to a wall and needs only a few metres of ducting aroundit. Reactivation air is taken from the room next to the cold store. As soon as the unit is connected to powerand switched on it will start to reduce accumulated ice and frost; until the store is completely free from ice and frost.IceDry controls the humidity and eliminates ice and frost. It also creates faster freezing of goods, reduces need for defrosts by up to a third, eliminatesslippery conditions in the loading dock and assures product quality. For more information, call 01480 410211 or email dryair@munters.co.ukCirrus Research ready to prescribe noise solutionsat Safety & Health ExpoCirrus Research is taking its Noise Doctor advisory clinic to Safety & Health Expo, when it opens its doors atExCeL in London for the first time this June.At Stand Q2380, the team of experts will be offering advice, information and product demonstrations on arange of sound level meters, noise dosimeters, training courses and noise warning signs.Key products showcased this year include...* Optimus Sound Level Meters, ideal for Noise at Work and Environmental Noise Measurements. * The doseBadge Noise Dosimeter, ideal for measuring and assessing the noise exposure of mobile workers or anyone working in hazardous environments. * The SoundSign Noise Warning Sign, ideal for informing and warning employees about high noise levels in the workplaceTo guarantee every customer enjoys the best in customer care and after service, Cirrus completes the all-inclusive product package with free training. The huge versatilityof processing equipment has allowedmany manufacturers to meet this growingdemand for natural products. The delicateingredients that many now desire wouldin the past have seemed impossible tointroduce to the job of mass-producing,because processing equipment simplywouldn’t have been able to handle themunless at very low speeds. Many jobs stillhad to be carried out by hand because thetechnology didn’t exist to deal with themin a gentle enough fashion. That’s now allchange and automation can be introducedat virtually every point – without leavingingredients unrecognisable in ahomogenous lump.Companies such as ProcessComponents specialise in high qualityequipment, from flour sifter spares to flowcontrol valves for live fish, that can dealwith a huge range of ingredients. Forexample, they have provided Iris valvesand sifter screens for biscuit ingredients toFox’s and level indicators on granulatedsugar hoppers for British Sugar. The aimis always to ensure ingredients areprocessed in an accurate and effectivemanner, ensuring totally accurate recipeformulation. It’s vital that companies can haveconfidence in the accuracy of theirfinished products and so weighing, product inspection, metal detection andmuch else is all now a familiar part of theprocessing line. Companies such as HBMare prioritising accuracy and reliability askey factors for food processing and theirupcoming workshop, which you can readabout elsewhere in this issue, focuses on anumber of different applications usingHBM products along with discussions onselecting and implementing the mostsuitable weighing technology. Thetechnology is now regularly integratedwithin hardware to ensure convenienceand lower costs for manufacturers.Weighing technology is certainlyoffering substantial benefits for food anddrink companies. Many are using multi-head weighers such as those produced byBilwinco, where products can bedistributed across multiple weighing unitswith the help of vibration and centrifugalforce, rather than individually from theconveyor belt. When particularly stickyor delicate ingredients are involved, thiscreates a huge advantage as it meansthere are less opportunities for productCompletecontrolThroughout the processing sector, major advancements are helpingfood and drink manufacturers improve both the quality and thequantity of the products they supply. 34-38:Layout 1 22/5/14 10:58 Page 1PROCESS CONTROLFood & Drink International 35to get stuck.A further challenge came recently whenBilwinco were developing their newRevolution series of weighers, in particulardeveloping a suitable load cell for the newdesign, which was customised for the foodindustry. In this instance, the load cell had tobe reliable and deliver very precisestandardised weighing within a few grams, and required an aseptic design to meet thehighest hygiene standards.HBM recommended to Bilwinco itspatented load cell, PW27, which comes in asmooth, hygienic, stainless steel design withan antibacterial surface. PW27 is alsoapproved for food handling according toEHEDG’s checklist for components withinhygienic design. Henrik Bache Jensen ofHBM Denmark says, “At the time, the loadcell PW27 was not yet introduced to themarket. It was the result of a new R&Dproject at HBM, based on the latesttechnologies.“In addition to meeting the highest37 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ALTERFALTERPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ROBERT KNESCHKE34-38:Layout 1 22/5/14 10:58 Page 236 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netHBM Test and Measurement Q Tel. + 49 6151 803-0 Q Fax +49 6151 803-9100 Q info@hbm.com Q www.hbm.comHBM United Kingdom Ltd Q Tel. 0208 515 6000 Q info@uk.hbm.com Q www.hbm.com Weighing, Batching and Filling on the Fly HBM load cells make it easy to control complex sorting, weighing, batching and fi lling processes quickly and accurately. This results in fewerreplacements and minimal downtime, which saves time and allows forproduction safety with a highmicrobiological quality.”Maintaining and calibrating processequipment is vital to ensure accuracy andconfidence in the production process. Oneaspect of process control that has takenon increased importance in recent years isthe requirement to monitor the output toensure accuracy and traceability. Thelatest vision systems are certainly assistingin this regard, especially as they usuallyallow the production line to be monitoredremotely and the various parameters thatneed to be met can be inputted in thesystem so flashpoints can be flagged upimmediately. There’s also a need for suchprocesses to be as secure as possible.Companies such as Cognex areproviding solutions, with the CognexDirectory Server software version 1.0introduced for use with its industry-leading line of In-Sight vision systems.Cognex Directory Server centralisesauthorisation and authentication controlfor all users, network-wide, as part of theoverall enterprise information securityarchitecture. The Cognex Directory Server leveragesindustry-standard IT infrastructure andprotocols such as LDAP, SSL andHTTPS for state-of-the-art networksecurity. When a user attempts to loginto an In-Sight camera, credentials arepassed to CDS for authentication anduser-specific permissions are transferredback to the camera. CDS can customiseaccess permissions for each user, whichhelps to ensure the integrity of the visionsystem setup as well as production qualityand safety. Enterprise customers canutilise the Cognex Directory Serversoftware to help protect sensitiveinformation and to comply with industryregulations, such as 21 CFR Part 11compliance for validation.Herb Lade, Vice President and BusinessUnit Manager at Cognex, points out,“Network security is a critical topic in thefactory automation industry as moreplants leverage the flexibility andopenness of Ethernet for their coremanufacturing backbone. Ethernet-enabled control systems allow for seamlessintegration into ERP systems and MES.With this comes a need for increasedsecurity measures to protect mission-critical data and operational parameters.”Across the industry there have beengreat strides in introducing newtechnology and a collaborative approachis reaping dividends. RockwellAutomation’s PartnerNetwork, forexample, is made up of businesses whohave demonstrated a commitment tohelping customers maximise theirautomation investment, and a furthereleven new companies have recently beenadded. The group is now a collaborativeteam of leading suppliers, systemintegrators, and machine and equipmentbuilders who work to help solvemanufacturing and automation challenges– ensuring companies benefit from thelatest technology faster.Rapid changes in technology and newproduct development bring with themchallenges for manufacturers to createviable, efficient and effective solutionsthat can ensure products get on theshelves as quickly as possible, and are ofthe highest quality when they do. Indeed, even morestringent regulations means packages now have to feature evermore detailed lists of ingredients for this reason. The growingawareness of fairtrade is also influencing consumers whenconsidering which products to buy.Yet despite the value consumers place on natural, highquality ingredients, they still won’t purchase products thatdon’t offer the flavours and tastes they’re used to. Those of acertain age still shudder at the thought of Coca-Cola’sdisastrous attempt to change their recipe in the eighties, whichremains the gold standard for ill-advised revamps andrelaunches.
