Itclaims that lacking a deeply-rooted or ingrained approachmeans that gaps in the ability to replace, reduce orreengineer plastic packaging will remain unclosed. That, itsays, will mean plastic reduction methods will simply failto properly address the issue. The science group explored these issues in a new whitepaper, Breaking up with plastic, in which it says that, insome cases, it will be required to change the way in whichproducts are presented, prepared or consumed toinstigate real change. Simon Norman, one of the paper’s authors and appliedscience consultant at Sagentia, explains: “Much of thetime product development is considered separately topackaging development. But with such a siloed approachthere is less opportunity to get to the crux of issues thatresult in the need for plastic packaging. Whether it’s podcoffee machine refills, shampoo bottles or disposablerazors, different organisations and specialists need towork together to reduce single-use plastic.“Addressing this issue requires consumer insight andunderstanding of the manufacturing and distributionstream, combined with scientific knowledge of theproducts themselves and properties of various packagingmaterials. And crucially, the industry needs to find waysto cut plastic waste without compromising importantfactors such as food safety and consumer enjoyment.”The fight against plastic packaging waste is far morecomplex an issue that can ever be solved with onesolution alone. Education and innovation will prove crucialin the months and years to come, as manufacturers andsuppliers turn towards more environmentally-friendlypackaging alternatives. Banning plastic materials, as hasbeen suggested by some, simply isn’t feasible and so wemust turn instead turn to more widespread recycling.2018 looks set to be a turning point for the food anddrinks industry, one we can look back on with pride. New focus on high barrierfor Innovia Films Innovia Films is refocusingits research and developmentefforts on high barriermaterials thanks tosubstantial investment in newassets. They will allow thecompany to produce a rangeof new Biaxially OrientedPolypropylene (BOPP)products with optimumbarrier performance. The firstto market will be high barriermetallised films, followed byAlOx clear high barrier filmsand coextruded oxygenbarrier films. Stephen Langstaff, GlobalBusiness Manager, Packaging, said: “We are very close to bringing theseassets on stream and have already been working hard to develop new filmsthat will help to extend the shelf life of a range of products, thereby reducingfood waste. “What is also exciting is that we will be developing options that will allowpack simplification, by removing/replacing layers within lamination materialsthat restrict recycling. They will also assist in the production of mono layermaterials for different applications that will enable them to be more easilyrecycled.”For more information, visit www.innoviafilms.com.© Shutterstock/Pressmaster46-50.qxp_Layout 1 29/05/2018 11:18 Page 5Food & Drink International 51www.fdiforum.netUK AD & WORLD BIOGAS EXPOThe food and drink supply chaincould be missing out on a significantimprovement to their bottom line bynot processing their food waste, according to the Anaerobic Digestionand Bioresources Association (ADBA)and the World Biogas Association(WBA), co-organisers of UK AD &World Biogas Expo 2018. Through the anaerobic digestionprocess, food waste can be turned intobiogas, which can be used to generateclean electricity and heat. Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive ofADBA, said: “Generating green energyfrom food processing wasteautomatically reduces a manufacturingplant’s waste treatment and energycosts, as well as its carbon footprint.Anaerobic digestion provides the foodindustry with the perfect opportunity tocreate a cost-efficient circular businessmodel where energy generated fromwaste supplies the factory and alsoproduces biofertiliser to ensure vitalnutrients can be returned to soil togrow new crops.”Anaerobic digestion is a proventechnology that is not difficult todeploy on existing sites. Hundreds ofexhibitors demonstrating the latesttechnology and financiers andconsultants with advice for companieslooking to capitalise on the potential offood waste will be at UK AD & WorldBiogas Expo 2018.Furthermore, by avoiding waste tolandfill, businesses can reduce methaneemissions, which are a majorcontributor to climate change. As aresult they can benefit from lowercharges for their industrial carbonemissions. In fact, according to WRAP, theoverall value of food waste from thefood and drink supply chain isestimated at £1.9 billion a year, translating to between £360 and£4,000 per tonne of waste. Given thesefigures, it is surprising that more foodmanufacturers have not installedanaerobic digestion plants on site. In addition, there is another call toaction. There is huge pressure forcountries to meet the Pariscommitments and UN SustainableDevelopment Goals, which have tightdeadlines. Governments need todevelop policies to ensure targets forenergy security, waste management, soil health, food security and air qualityare met. Anaerobic digestion can helpmeet all these targets, meaning that thefood and drink supply chain can make aUK AD and WorldBiogas Expo 201852 ÁTaking place between 11 – 12 July at NECBirmingham, UK AD And World Biogas Expo is thelargest trade show solely dedicated to theflourishing anaerobic digestion and biogas industry. © Shutterstock/Monkey Business Images51-53.qxp_Layout 1 29/05/2018 14:30 Page 1Generating energy from food waste is something that can result in significant cost savings and help fulfil corporate social responsibility obligations for the food and drink industry.
