IGS supplies plug-and-play vertical farming technology to indoor farms to enable the efficient production of food in any location around the world. The company opened its first vertical farming demonstration facility in August 2018. Since then, it has received significant interest from around the world with orders mounting. This technology has been designed specifically to address some of vertical farming’s biggest challenges – including the cost of power and labour, as well as the inability to produce consistently high-quality produce at scale. The £5.4 million investment will allow IGS to create jobs in areas such as software development, engineering, robotics and automation. It will also help the company to increase its product development, including continued innovation in AI, big data and the Internet of Things. Calls for plain packaging on confectionary & sugary drinks A think tank has advised that all confectionery, crisps and sugary drinks sold in the UK should be wrapped in plain packaging like tobacco products. This would help to put sweets, crisps and sugary drinks on a level playing-field with unbranded fruit and vegetables which, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) says, is necessary for the UK to win the battle against preventable diseases. An IPPR report claims that these products should be wrapped in plain packaging to reduce the numbers of people whose health is jeopardised by consuming unhealthy snacks and fizzy drink. The proposal is among a series of radical measures to combat what the think tank terms the “major risks” of preventable diseases, responsible for over half the disease burden in England and almost one in five deaths. The report also calls an end to day-time TV advertising of confectionary. Food businesses back pledge to halve food waste Some of the biggest names in the food and drink industry have thrown their weight behind a pledge to help drive down food waste. More than 100 names joined the cause following a call to action from the government, including all the UK’s major supermarkets. Players also include Nestlé, Unilever, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and WWF. Currently in the UK an estimated 10.2 million tonnes of food and drink are wasted annually after leaving the farm gate, worth around £20 billion. It is estimated that UK householders spend £15 billion every year on food that could have been eaten but ends up being thrown away, equating to £500 a year for the average household. The announcement comes after the government’s Food Surplus and Waste Champion Ben Elliot urged organisations to ‘Step up to the Plate’ at a landmark symposium in May. The Dutch food giant said that it has “strong ambitious” and is eyeing large-scale investments to expand the capacity and product range of its plant- based businesses – Vivera, Culifrost and Dutch Tofu Company. Chilled and deep-frozen meat specialist Enkco was sold to Dutch Van Loon Group at the end of May. The group said the sale will enable it to focus on “the strong growth opportunities in the plant-based market in Europe”. Production capacity of Vivera’s plant in the Netherlands will now be considerably expanded in Q3 of 2019. “We are one of the first companies in the world’s meat industry to say final goodbye to meat,” said Willem van Weede, CEO of Vivera Foodgroup. “From now on we only focus on plant-based foods which are really conquering the world.” National Flexible stick pack brings back memories Barry Twigg, Chairman of National Flexible, still remembers his Grandma’s stew 70 years on. Some 70 years ago I would be taken across Sheffield with Mum & Dad on our weekly Saturday night pilgrimage to Grandma Kate’s back to back terrace house and every Saturday night she would serve us with a ‘stew’ incorporating Henderson’s relish. So much of a staple did this become in the Twigg family diet that when my son emigrated to Australia in the 80’s, two bottles of ‘Henderson’s’ were stowed away in his luggage. Who would have guessed all those years ago that National Flexible would be supplying the packaging film for the unique Sheffield relish? These are stick packs for inclusion in award-winning recipe boxes. Grandma was within a mile of the original Henderson’s factory, where the relish was produced for nearly 130 years, and whilst the company has now moved to new modern premises in Sheffield, the ‘secret recipe’ for Henry Henderson’s relish remains. lunch! is the only show dedicated to our sector. Keen to capitalise on the growing plant-based and flexitarian movements, Tyson said the Raised & Rooted brand was created to “provide great- tasting plant-based and blended foods that are rooted in how people eat today”. The brand will launch with several major retail customers this year with initial products including plant-based nuggets and blended burgers made with a combination of beef and plants. Ishida inspection systems ensure immaculate packaging for crisps A specialist German potato chip brand is maintaining excellent quality control on its recently upgraded high-capacity packing lines thanks to the introduction of sealtesters and checkweighers from Ishida Europe. Johanning Snack produces 12 different pack formats with fill weights ranging from 20g to 200g. When the end-of-line packing systems were automated in 2018, it meant upgrading to state-of-the-art quality control facilities as well. Employees had previously checked the density of the sealed packets by hand, and weight monitoring was a matter of spot checks. The Ishida sealtesters and checkweighers deliver a seamless, totally reliable quality control solution capable of operating at high speeds, for example up to 85 packs per minute for a 115g bag, with only the upstream systems preventing them from achieving even higher speeds. “Ishida was the only supplier to offer both sealtesters and checkweighers in one package,” explains André Wurz, Technical Manager at Johanning Snack. Functional ‘fail-safes’ in inspection equipment improves food safety, says Loma Loma Systems is stressing the importance of incorporating functional fail-safe measures into metal detectors, checkweighers and X-ray inspection equipment typically installed at Critical Control Points (CCP) in food manufacturing facilities. The company’s innovative fail-safe features are specially designed to improve safety and help avoid product recalls, plus prevent damage to brand reputation and costly downtime. To help with the detection of contaminated products and ensure corrective measures are taken, Loma’s advanced inspection technology has been developed to offer smart and reliable additional functionality or ‘fail-safe’ features which check the integrity of the inspection system, often used as a CCP. Designed to fail-safe in the event of a problem and provide a secondary back up to ensure manufacturing working practices are operating correctly, Loma IQ4 Metal Detectors, CW3 Checkweighers and X5 X-ray inspection systems incorporate a wide range of fail-safe features to help ensure a food plant is commercially viable, ethical and keeps everyone safe. Hygienic conveyor enhances food quality and safety Tray sealing specialist Proseal has developed a new ultra-hygienic conveyor to help food manufacturers meet the highest food quality and safety standards. The next generation OC Conveyor incorporates several unique features that avoid potential food traps, together with an enhanced design which ensures fast and thorough cleaning during wash down. The new fully folded construction of the conveyor has removed any box sections or tubing. These are areas where food can sometimes fall or become trapped. In particular, sealed tubes have the potential for bacteria to develop if the integrity of the tube is breached in any way. Similarly, open wiring looms have replaced the more common wire bundles, removing another potential food trap and providing easier access for the cleaning of individual cables. A further significant feature is the replacement of moving belts with a new wash-through chain transport system. This again avoids any food traps and speeds up cleaning as well as eliminating belt maintenance costs. Ÿnsect opens ‘premium insect protein’ production facility Ÿnsect, the Parisian natural ingredients maker, has launched what it claims is the first fully automated industrial facility to produce premium insect protein. Based in the city of Amiens, the FARMYNG project is co-funded by the European Commission and the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) who are investing € 20 million euros. Ÿnsect, which will operate its Ynfarm plant as part of the programme, is the first French company to win an EU-backed project on such a scale. The project will produce insects called Tenebrio Molitor on an industrial scale, which can be used as premium proteins for animal feed and fertilizers. The company said this will be the first time that bio-based proteins are produced on an industrial scale, to meet ever-increasing global demand. Over the next ten years, the project will have the potential to ramp up production to over 200,000 tonnes of premium protein with revenues of around € 1 billion. on line 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/06/2019 14:34 Page 6Next >
