< Previousand Climate Change, says, “Thegovernment is committed to promotingan increase in energy from waste schemesthrough anaerobic digestion.40www.fdiforum.netAn increase of around 800% in theUK anaerobic industry has recently beenforecast, which will no doubt have manypotential operators interested across theworld. As it stands, the anaerobicdigestion industry is already deliveringaround four times more electricity thansolar PV technology, which is a greatstart. This is in no doubt due to theincredible amount of waste available foruse in such facilities. With the UKsending around fifteen million tonnes offood waste a year to landfill, it has beensuggested that a ban could mean a boomfor the AD industry. The proposed banon organic waste, put forward byCentreForum, would solve the currentproblem that the UK is set to run out oflandfill space in general by 2020, whichis sooner than most were envisioning.Anaerobic digestion currentlyproduces around 1.3 TWh of energy inthe UK - enough to power 300,000homes. CentreForum believes that thesector can expand to the purported 800%over the next eight years if therecommendations of its report arefollowed.Ed Davey, Secretary of State for EnergyTurning waste into energy is something both agriculture and industry are looking into in a big way, with estimates the sector will swell by unprecedented levels. So, should companies jump on theAD and biogas bandwagon?Visitor numbers to the recent UK AD& Biogas expo in Birmingham weresaid to be the best yet, with morenew enquiries than ever before42 ANAEROBIC DIGESTIONFuturepotentialPHOTO: WRAPThe UK’s use ofanaerobic digestion is setto swell by an estimated800%, but of course thiswill simply bring levels upto mainland Europe’salready large uptake.Futurepotential40-42:Layout 1 20/7/12 11:57 Page 1Corrugated tube heat exchangers Scraped surface heat exchangersTurnkey processing plants Plate Heat Exchangers Piston PumpsTube in tubeTriple tubeMulti tubeScraped surface PlateFOOD SYSTEMS:HRS is able to combine its products into complete processing plants. Thanks to our experience of over 20 years in the market we can offer ourcustomers a wide range of modular system solutions, suitable for the mostcommon scenarios. The core of the system solution that HRS offers is the thermal treatmentsection: any kind of heat exchanger combination can be used for obtaining the best result for the pasteurisation or sterilisation process. It is a Thermal process where energy is invested to separate waterfrom the effluent, thus reducing its volume. The evaporated water, whencondensed, can be reused again. In environmental processing the effluentis often a fouling substance. Normal Evaporators would have a limited operation time between stops for cleaning. HRS has overcome this problemby applying the Unicus scraped surface evaporator. The scraped surface means constant removal of fouling which maintains theconstant evaporation capacity. The Unicus can evaporate to very high levelsof concentration.www.digestateprocessing.cominfo@digestateprocessing.comHRS Heat Exchangers offers a wide range of heat exchangers for hygienic processing in the food industry:40-42:Layout 1 20/7/12 11:57 Page 242www.fdiforum.netANAEROBIC DIGESTIONCentreForum’s report offers someinteresting ideas for how this increasecan be achieved.”Report co-author Quentin Maxwell-Jackson says, “Anaerobic digestiontechnology has so many clear advantagesover other waste treatment and energygeneration options that it is verysurprising it has not taken off in a bigway yet in the UK. But that is becausetrying to get an anaerobic digestionscheme up and running at the moment islike trying to win a cycle race with thebrakes on.”The report’s other author ThomasBrooks adds, “There are some simplethings government can do to release thebrakes on anaerobic digestion. Forinstance, simply banning organic waste tolandfill in England, as they are alreadyplanning to do in Scotland, would giveanaerobic digestion a huge boost.”Lord Redesdale, chairman of theAnaerobic Digestion and BiogasAssociation says, “This is an importantreport which lays out clearrecommendations for how governmentcan better support the anaerobicdigestion sector and realise the benefits itcould bring to economic growth, wastemanagement, renewable energy andclimate change.“CentreForum have shown thatanaerobic digestion already represents asignificant part of the UK’s renewableenergy mix - generating four times moreelectricity than solar PV - and arepushing for government to support an800% increase in that generating capacityby 2020.”Industry on showThe recent UK AD and Biogas 2012event hosted a range of companies thatwere showcasing the latest technology onoffer in this fast-emerging sector. Whatwas clear from exhibitors was therecognition that the industry is enjoyingat present. The ludicrous amount ofwaste sent to landfill is being addressedand the available technology is there tonot only deal with food waste, but also togenerate electricity for both smallbusinesses and large. A message came through, however, that private AD concerns, particularly interms of agriculture and farms only reallypays back if you are a middle-sizedconcern. Too small and you risk justbeing able to pay back your costs overtime, too large and the maintenance andcosts involved could affect the businesseffectiveness of investing. This came outduring the session regarding businessplanning. Representatives fromClydesdale Bank, Downing CorporateFinance and Agri-gen discussed ADplanning within agriculture, but theirlogic could just as easily extend to foodproducers and manufacturers hoping tocapitalise on AD.Graham Thorne, director of Agri-genoutlined the problems companies cancome up against. One striking example isthe sheer amount of red tape there isinvolved to operate under rules andregulations laid down by Ofgem andother regulatory bodies. A gap of three tosix months in getting bio assessments upto standard can set a company back up to£300,000. It seems initial investment isto remain expensive. One message that also came out of theevent was the need to get the most fromanaerobic digesters in terms ofperformance. Too little feedstock on aregular delivery schedule means thatalthough gas and digestate may be beingproduced, more could be produced iflogistics were addressed. This alsochimes with the debate on planning, theexperts on hand citing only one largefailure in the industry so far, which wasplaced in a rural area that cost too muchto transport adequate feedstocks to.For a young industry, this can beforgiven. Mistakes will surely be made, but overall the attitude of the conferenceoverall was optimistic and rightly so. Itremains to be seen if Governments willtake heed of the advice offered, but as itstands, AD and biogas stands to be thefastest-moving, if not most practicalmeans of dealing with food waste andcreating energy we have.Food waste could well bebanned from landfill if proposalsare taken seriouslyPHOTO: WRAP40-42:Layout 1 20/7/12 11:57 Page 3UK AD & BIOGASwww.fdiforum.net43With a majority of exhibitors commenting that their impressionof this year’s event was an improvement on previous editions, itshows the diversity and interest in the biogas and anaerobicdigestion sector as a whole. With both days proving busy, focuswas put upon both the food industry and agriculture’sinvolvement in the still-emerging industry which looks set toexplode over the next few decades.Gathering at the NEC, over three thousand visitors attended, taking advantage of over two hundred exhibitors all showcasingtheir technology and services. One element which seemed toimpress exhibitors in general was the amount of new visitorsattending. For too long the industry has been talking ‘to itself’, somore interest from a wider audience is an encouraging signindeed. The two-day conference that took place also engaged a varietyof delegates, eager to find out what the industry had to say, thefirst day dealt with getting value from food waste, with on-farmanaerobic digestion being addressed the following day.The anaerobic digestion industry had reason to celebrate at theshow too, as the event played host to the first UK AD & BiogasIndustry Awards, organised by letsrecycle on behalf of theAnaerobic Digestion & Biogas Association. With an 800% increase forecastfor the anaerobic digestion industry and a call for the ban oforganic waste being sent to landfill, it is perhaps the most excitingsector in renewables to keep an eye on.
