In April, SABMiller signedthe contract with Krones as the turnkeysupplier for all of the brewery’s interiorequipment. SABMiller had already joinedforces with Krones to build four modularbreweries in Uganda, Tanzania,Mozambique and Angola. The project in Tanzania, with acapacity of 800,000 hectolitres, served asa template. On 27th July 2012, six monthsafter installation work had begun, theOnitsha Brewery produced its first brew, and another three weeks later saw thefirst bottles coming off the line. Peter Stuttard, Business DevelopmentManager of SABMiller subsidiary IntafactBeverages, says, “We had a good teamfrom Krones on site, with more thantwenty staff. At peak times, there were180 people here for the construction andinstallation work. It all went off verysmoothly, which was due to the goodpreparatory work involved.”The brewhouse has been dimensionedfor 400 hectolitres per brew and ninebrews a day, and equipped by SABMillerwith a mash tun, a ShakesBeer wortcopper, a wort boiler with a Stromboliinternal boiler, a hot-water tank, a cerealcooker and a whirlpool. A mash filterinstead of a lauter tun separates mashfrom spent grains because SABMiller usesnot only barley malt and maize but alsosorghum malt, which is not suited forbeing separated in a lauter tun. The second big hall, right next to thathousing the process-engineering kit, accommodates the bottling equipment,returnable-glass lines rated at 28,0000.33-litre and 22,500 0.6-litre bottles anhour respectively. It is fully automatic, and that also goes for the dry end, fromdepalletising right up to palletising, whichis in each case handled by a Modulpalmachine, and for the Smartpac unpackerand packer.By the end of December 2012, saleswere three times higher as the plannedoutput. This was primarily due to thenewly created “Hero” brand, which hasexceeded all expectations. And the winner is... “Hero”SABMiller keeps on expanding its clout in Africa. A complete new brewery in Nigeria, its fifth modularbrewery within four years, has been built together with Krones as the turnkey supplier. The new brewery inOnitsha has initially been dimensioned for an annual capacity of 500,000 hectolitres. This comes alongsidethe launch of the new beer brand “Hero”.In the brewhouse, SABMiller hasinstalled a mash tun, a ShakesBeerwort copper, a wort boiler with aStromboli internal boiler, a hot-watertank, a cereal cooker and a whirlpool. The second big hall, right next to thathousing the process-engineering kit, accommodates the bottlingequipment, a returnable-glass line. For moreinformation, visitdrinktec.krones.com orsee them at drinktec onStand B6-10041-44:Layout 1 19/7/13 14:26 Page 4Food & Drink International 45www.fdiforum.netRWMThe show recently announced thatEdward Davey, Secretary of State forEnergy and Climate Change, is speaking atthe Energy from Waste Theatre. Withsome of the world’s biggest ingredientcompanies making up the cluster ofcompanies that back the event, it means afantastic opportunity to debate, networkand ruminate on the future of this ever-changing industry. With Lille being somewhat of a centrefor health, it includes the Eurasante BioBusiness Park which is dedicated to biobusiness and research and development. In close contact to a network of specialisedhospitals, Lille could be seen by many asbeing the centre for research in northernEurope for nutrition and healthknowledge, if not practical trials andresearch. Our visit began with a plenary sessionon how open the health and nutritionsector is to innovation, which includedopinion pieces from the likes of Nestle,Fiesland Campina, Cybercolloids andOjah. Ojah’s meat replacement productwas used as an example of how if nutritioncompanies are daring, then they can beseen as innovative. They trialled theirPlenti meat and fish alternative in thestreet with taste tests, with anoverwhelming majority of people notnoticing the difference between theirproduct and real meat or fish. RossCampbell from Cybercolloids also raisedthe idea that if you aren’t willing to enterinto agreements with companies overexclusivity or collaboration then you havethe right not to discount fees charged. Theoverwhelming notion that came from thisfevered debate was the fact that toinnovate, firms must work together.Visiting Purifunction at the EurasantePark was a revelation. An R&D servicescentre dedicated to extraction, purificationand characterisation processes of naturalingredients, we originally met the teamback in 2011 when the company hadinitially formed. To see the multi-millioneuro centre functioning and performingcomplex research into ingredients thatcould make a difference to all sorts ofhealth applications and food ingredientswas inspiring. Things certainly move fastin Lille. One of the highlights of our visit to48Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netViveinnovation!As northern France’s event dedicated to the nutrition and healthsector, we once again pay Nutrevent a visit.A briefing atRoquette48-49:Layout 1 19/7/13 11:49 Page 1NUTREVENTNutrevent was stopping off at theinspirational Pasteur Institute of Lille, a basein the city for clinical trials which are offeredto those who need it. The Institute is all aboutprevention and the team told us of itsinternational reputation and its current workin Japan and Senegal which involvesinoculation research. One of its key beliefs is‘It is good to die in good health’.Visiting Roquette, one of France’s largestingredients producers is also impressive. Ahuge, sprawling site has endless researchfacilities looking into the fields of humannutrition and pharmaceuticals as well asanimal nutrition and chemistry. With divisionslooking into matters as specific as chewing gumingredients and confectionary, to see suchadvanced laboratories working on solutions tothe industries fast-moving issues was inspiringand shows the northern France region off asone of the industry’s leading lights. With advances seemingly happening all thetime in this field, companies such as the oneswe visited are set surely only to grow andexpand their offerings. Our brief tour of theTate & Lyle facility where tests are done onproducts as diverse as bakery items andflavouring extracts to create new andinnovative products confirms this. We’ll surely be returning to see where thisdiverse industry is heading next.
