< Previous20 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netPROCESSING SPOTLIGHTInnovation and efficiency are the twintenants that govern any manufacturingsector. For food makers, the emphasisis on delivering a consistently highquality product into stores or suppliers, whilst also meeting the needs fromregulators, industry bodies, governmentand consumers. Demands, commitments and requirements from allsides forever influence the future of thefood industry, leaving manufacturersand producers perpetually performing adelicate balancing act. Think of it likethe stock exchange, with the constantblinking numbers revealing the neverending ebb and flow of commerce andindustry. Efficiency invites sustainability The food industry has come underheavy fire of late with regulators andgovernments coming down hard onwaste – both edible and otherwise – aswell as sustainability and contaminates. This leaves producers revaluating theirprocesses and searching for new waysto boost efficiency. Innovation dictatesthat by improving upon a process youinherently make it more streamlined. But this doesn’t quite equate to beingbetter for the environment. Theindustrial revolution may have broughtindustry into a new age, but its effectshave wreaked havoc with theenvironment. Of course, today’smanufacturers are far more consciousof their surroundings and their widerresponsibilities to the world. Many ofthe industry’s biggest players havetaken the initiative and overhauled theirfacilities, installing solar panels, windturbines and water reclamationsystems. Others have utilised greenerProcessingthe future The food processing industry is collectively prioritising speed, safety and yield, heralding a sea change in the supply chain. This isonly half the battle, however, withproducers needing to apply the sameattitude to the entire supply chain. Efficiency, then, is tantamount tosustainability, with food makers able toachieve both ends – killing two birdswith one stone, as it were. A case inpoint is premium meat snack maker,Meatsnacks Group, who is beefing upits production with Fortress scavengerinspection technology. Sales in theambient meat snack category arecontinuing to rise, driven in no smallpart by the Paleo diet. With a marketshare of 78 per cent, Meatsnacks isshouldering much of this growth and, inorder to keep up with demand, itneeded to upscale its production. On the surface of it, this decision isone taken in order to maintain andcapitalise on its position, however, thebenefits stretch far beyond that.Investing in leading equipment helpskeep wastage on the processing linedown, with maximum yield going tomarket. Already, a company has shrunkthe amount of food wasted. Moreover, market leading machinery typicallyperforms better than its cheapercounterparts, ensuring a smaller carbonfootprint. Top quality detectionequipment will also help find andremove metallic objects in-house ratherthan putting consumers in danger andhaving to initiate a product recall, withentire lines inevitably facing theincinerator. In the current businessclimate, it’s perfectly logical for acompany to meet its own ends whilstalso serving the wider environment andhelping to set a glowing example forindustry peers to follow. To that end, Meatsnacks Groupinvested in three Phantom metaldetectors from Fortress Technology, given it was the only food inspectionproducer to offer a system that couldfilter out the signal generated by ironfilings from each packet’s scavengerPHOTO: MEATSNACKS GROUP/ FORTRESS TECHNOLOGY © shutterstock/06photo25 Á20-31_Layout 1 24/07/2017 11:06 Page 320-31_Layout 1 24/07/2017 11:06 Page 424 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netAdvancedEngineeringMIDDLETON LTDmixingis our businesslInline High Shear Mixerl3 Stage High Shear MixerlDispersion MixerlFluid MixerslAdProlTop Entry High Shear Immersion MixerlBottom Entry High Shear MixerlSealed Bearing Mixermixerdesign and technologyUnit 5D Transpennine Trading Estate,Gorrells Way, Rochdale, Lancashire OL11 2PXtel: 01706 759003 fax: 01706 759004email: info@aemixers.comweb: www.aemixers.comVisit us atPPMAStand C1120-31_Layout 1 24/07/2017 11:06 Page 5Food & Drink International 25www.fdiforum.netPROCESSING SPOTLIGHToxygen absorber. This crucialtechnology embedded in each packet iscritical to maintaining the product’sshelf life of up to 18 months, therebyreducing potential wastage. Forsupermarkets now donating surplusand unwanted food to charities andfood banks, this long life can be a boon. Speaking about the scavengerabsorber, Meatsnacks’ EngineeringManager, David Stephenson, says: “Wefind it’s more effective than gasflushing, and it’s a less complex processfor extending shelf life and limiting thegrowth of aerobic spoilage organisms.Scavengers, which are especiallypopular in the US market, also protectagainst loss of colour and flavour.”Conveying the future Food processing forms a puzzle ofsorts, comprising various parts togetherto form a whole. It’s alsoprevalent right across the supply chain, truly from farm to fork. This ubiquitydoes mean that conveyor systems cancause the spread of contaminates aswell as being themselves unsanitary. When considering a new conveyingsystem, manufacturers are bombardedwith a number of options, so it can bedifficult to see the wood for the trees. The top priorities are on sanitation, reducing cross contamination andpreserving product integrity. As a majorcontact surface in the supply chain, conveyors need to be regularly andthoroughly washed. In order to preventdowntime, manufacturers need a designthat minimises sharp moving parts andopen spaces where matter can accrueand bacteria can thrive. These spacescan also become inundated withcleaning fluids which can also have adetrimental effect on food products. When weighing up any new piece ofequipment, a manufacturer must alsoconsider whether it will result inreduced operation and maintenancecosts. It’s in their interest to keep costsdown, but without sacrificing healthand safety standards. As we said, it’s aprecarious balancing act. Responding to the need of industryand their customers, machine makersare developing more responsiveconveyor systems that move productquickly, cause less damage and providean operator friendly workplace. At£95.5 billion, food and drink forms theUK’s largest manufacturing sector. As amajor part of its competitivenessdomestically and abroad, it goeswithout saying that this sector will forma major role in its post-Brexit future. Inorder to remain productive andattractive to investors and importers, the UK needs to put a support systemin place to continue its growth. To thatend, the Food and Drink Federation(FDF) has commissioned an industry-wide report from professional servicesnetwork company Grant Thorntonwhich highlights key growthopportunities, outlining the roadblocksfacing the industry, the uniquegeological spread of the sector and itsoverall importance to the wider UKeconomy. Part of the report is obviouslyfocussed on innovation – the precursorand enabler of growth. The findingsreveal the overall health and outlook ofthe sector, offering an insight intowhat’s taking place in food processing. For example, 89 per cent ofrespondents are currently involved innew product developments, with anumber of manufacturers engaged inlong-term calorie reductionprogrammes – prudent, given therecent sugar tax and rumblings of anextension to high fat foods. This clearlyindicates that new productdevelopments and launches are on thehearts and minds of manufacturers.Capturing the zeitgeist with newproducts aimed at capitalising oncurrent consumer and social trends is asmart move. Some of these launchesare likely tailored towards othereconomies, as the UK looks furtherafield for new export markets. Another finding revealed that just 54per cent of manufacturers surveyed hadaccessed Government R&D tax credits, which are not seen as a whole industryinnovation solution. Almost half ofrespondents are involved in an on-going collaboration with highereducation or research initiatives, as theskills gap continues to widen and a30 Á© shutterstock/Vladimir Nenezic20-31_Layout 1 24/07/2017 11:07 Page 920-31_Layout 1 24/07/2017 11:07 Page 10Next >
