Invisible to consumers, Polytag’s UV tags have been printed onto the labels of M&S four-pint milk bottles. Once recycled by households, the bottles will enter recycling facilities where they will be scanned by Polytag’s Plastic Detection Units, with the retailer able to view live recycling data. By ‘tagging’ products with invisible UV tags, M&S now gains access to real-time, barcode-level insights into when, where, and how much of its single-use plastic packaging is recycled by consumers. This data is designed to accurately track sustainability targets, improve the accuracy of recycling claims and strengthen compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations – potentially reducing associated costs through more precise reporting. Polytag’s invisible UV tags – a layer of data matrix codes – are plate- printed onto the milk bottles at standard line speeds by Interket UK. London-based snacking giant, pladis, has earmarked the bulk of the cash for its sites in the North West of England. pladis said the additional capital will be used to increase capacity, capability and productivity through the introduction of more automated lines and updated factory infrastructure. The biscuit and cracker maker is also targeting a sustainability benefit. Investments in its UK operations are expected to cut 876 tonnes of carbon emissions each year – the equivalent of removing approximately 440 cars off the road. In Stockport, the home of the McVitie’s Jaffa Cake, pladis is investing £21m to introduce a new chocolate moulding line featuring state-of-the-art robotic technology. Liverpool’s Aintree site, known for baking Jacob’s Cream Crackers, will benefit from a £33m overhaul. This comprehensive refurbishment includes the installation of new ovens and infrastructure, ensuring the facility is fit for the future. In Carlisle, £2m will be used to invest in the savoury assortments department, resulting in the bakery recruiting, onboarding and training 48 new colleagues. This historic site, the world’s oldest biscuit factory, has been in operation since 1831 and currently employs around 800 people. This vote of confidence in the North West as a manufacturing powerhouse comes on the back of new data which revealed pladis’ manufacturing operations generate almost £240m for the regional economy each year. An additional pot of £12m has been allocated to support infrastructure across its UK sites which – alongside Stockport, Liverpool and Carlisle – include facilities in Halifax, Harlesden in North London and Leicester. Burg Group doubles capacity with palletiser upgrade Vinegar producer Burg Group has doubled the capacity of a palletiser by adding an extra infeed conveyor, with the upgrade carried out by Qimarox Upgrading & Services (QU&S). For over two decades, QU&S has played an important role in Burg Group’s mission, starting in 2003 with the installation of the first Lowrunner palletiser at the production site in Heerhugowaard. The first system was expanded in 2009 with two Highrunner palletisers, and in 2021, QU&S further increased capacity in Heerhugowaard by moving a third Highrunner palletiser from its production site in Klundert. In January 2023, Burg Group knocked on QU&S’ door again. The company had decided to relocate an entire production line from Roosdaal to Heerhugowaard: a project that required major rebuilding of the production hall. QU&S was commissioned to upgrade one of the three existing palletisers to make it suitable for integration into this production line. The main issue was the capacity of the palletiser. QU&S therefore converted the machine and created a second infeed conveyor, seeing capacity more than double from 14 to up to 35 trays per minute.
