With no needfor a stud-lid or hinge, the resealable film actsas an effective barrier and remains tamper-evident right up until opening. Using film to pack certain products canalso save on food waste. Compostable, plant-derived film bags that let moisture in and outhave been adopted by Asda and Tesco in theUK to pack potatoes, allowing them todouble their sell-by date. Allowing control ofcarbon dioxide levels within the packagingmeans consumers have a lot more time to usethe potatoes purchased which means less isthrown away to landfill. This not only offersvalue, but also means supermarkets are givenbragging rights to making less of a carbonfootprint. An aseptic future? The world market for aseptically packedproducts amounted to an astonishing 123billion litres in 269 billion packs during 2011,according to a report from ZenithInternational and Warrick Research.Volumes have grown by just over 5% a yearsince 2008, with South and South East Asiaachieving the fastest rise of 22% a year.Milk accounts for 39% of asepticallypacked products, with beverages responsiblefor 37% and other dairy or food productsmaking up the remainder. Aseptic filling hasyet to make a significant impact in foodmarkets, but there are some established nicheapplications, with sauces, tomato productsand baby food being identified as importantareas of development. The ability to print at photographic qualityon aseptic packaging has also recently beenimproved. This provides greateropportunities for product differentiationand brand impact. The new technologyallows printing on uncoated paperboardpackaging without the mottling andinaccuracies that previously appeared onpackaging in the past, perhaps marring itsreputation previously. A recent Chinese launch of a single-serveaseptic pouch used to hold milk also chimesstrong with the consumer demands forportioning. Although not a new idea, thesingle-serve pack needs no refrigeration andso can save retailers storage costs, but otherthan novelty value, it is hard to see theappeal of these packs beyond initial curiouspurchase. One advantage is its fast fillingand production rate, with each pouch onlytaking around three seconds to fill online. Aseptic certainly offers attractivepackaging and hygienic ways of packagingproducts, but it will take more thangimmicks to effect a sea-change in thepackaging industry. Challenging traditionalpackaging methods is a good thing whenmanufacturers, retailers and consumers cansee the advantages, but until all three canadopt new ways of thinking, these kinds ofproducts may stay on the shelves. www.fdiforum.net41PACKAGINGPHOTO: HANSANORe-sealable lidding36-41:Layout 1 17/8/12 11:35 Page 6PACKAGING42 www.fdiforum.netMaximise profit margins, minimise packaging waste Manufacturers of products that require overwrapping need to reduce theirenvironmental footprint to a minimum and cut costs – while still providingcustomers with tough, attractive packages that protect and promote brandimage.A significant trend can be seen in the move towards flow wrapping productwithout a carrying tray or punnet to bring immediate and significant savings inboth packaging material and packaging costs. However the challenge is toensure that the product is not damaged as it progresses through the packagingmachine. A range of sophisticated infeeds that can transport product to thewrapping module without damage have been developed and improvementshave been made at the transfer point where the product passes from the infeedmechanism to the wrapping film. A further innovation has seen the flow wrapping machine seam crimp andreel handling mechanism inverted – generally referred to as a Top Seal orInverted flow wrapping machine and most effective for delicate products. Theinverted design also enables further diversification of the product infeedarrangement so it can be tailored to specific needs.Further film savings are achieved by designing the flow wrapping machineso it will only flow when product is placed onto the infeed. If no product isdetected the wrapping module stops so no empty bags are produced. Thisfeature can be combined with product detection that causes the machine toalter the bag length to suit the length of the product. Both “no product nobag” and “cut to length” features achieve significant savings in film wastage.Redpack Packaging Machinery is leading the way in “trayless” flowwrapping development. In recent months, 60% of Redpack’s machineproduction has been for wrapping product without trays and they have builtan impressive portfolio of machine configurations. Their latest triumph is leaving a rosy impression on apple growers andpackers. Apple growers have been demanding a flow wrapping machine thatcan wrap apples without a tray and in a format to suit supermarket shelves.Redpack’s P325S with “Frictionless Infeed” has been developed to providedamage-free transportation of fruit along the infeed and transfer onto thewrapping film. As a further improvement. Redpack have configured the P325-FI product infeed so that apples can be collated in “soldier packs” of four, six, eight or ten without the need for infeed change parts. With wrapping speedsof around 60ppm, this doubles the packing speed compared to the old method.Redpack’s Peter Smith says, “Apple packers are very excited about the newP325S frictionless infeed flow wrapper because it doesn’t damage the fruit, canbe easily adjusted for different size packs, doubles their packaging speed andsaves them money on their packaging materials. You could say that it’s a realwindfall for them.”with trayless flow wrapping from Redpack Packaging MachineryFor more information, contact Redpack PackagingMachinery on sales@redpack.co.uk or visitwww.redpack.co.uk.42:Layout 1 16/8/12 15:09 Page 1PPMAwww.fdiforum.net43Solutions for every challengeThis year’s exhibition will be built aroundthe cornerstones of Automation, Innovation,Efficiency and Technology in order to deliverthe best insight into solutions that maximisethe productivity, consistency and quality ofproducts and services in the processing andpackaging industry. Visitors to the show will be able to learnmore about increased throughput andpredictability of quality made possiblethorough hi-tech Automation. The 2012edition is also encouraging a commitment toInnovation, providing opportunities forexhibitors and visitors alike to gainunprecedented access to the technology thatmay lead to the next big development in theindustry. But it’s not just innovation that isimportant. Increasing productivity is theultimate goal of all businesses but this mustbe achieved without sacrificing quality.Efficiency is therefore crucial and visitors tothis year’s show will be able to learn howthey can improve both quantity and quality. Finally, the role that technology plays inaiding the above objectives will be illustratedat the show through live productdemonstrations. Further to these opportunities to dobusiness and make new contacts, a series ofpanel debates will bring into focus the issueschallenging the industry. These discussionswill focus on some of the most pertinentissues affecting the industry today. Following the success of last year’s Onesto Watch competition, the 2012 PPMAShow will see the return of these awards toacknowledge the best and brightest up andcoming talent in the industry. The awardsrecognise the contributions of processing andpackaging professionals under the age of 35who have worked in the industry for at leastfour years. The organisers of the PPMA Show havealready announced three outstanding youngprofessionals from the packaging andprocessing industry as the finalists for thisyear’s awards, all of whom have continuouslydemonstrated exceptional entrepreneurship, commitment and innovation in their careers.Going head-to-head for the top spot areAlex Hofmann from Schubert UK, MarcelDarroch-Davies from Axelent Ltd and MarkWilliam Flintoft from Quasar AutomationLtd. They now face a public vote to decidewho will take home the gold, silver andbronze awards online.
