< PreviousCONFERENCES AND EVENTSwww.fdiforum.net69events – including many more focusedshows which many delegates may havealready attended. It’s not surprising, therefore, that manyof the leading events are now co-locatedwith complementary shows, or split intovarious themed groupings, to allow visitorsto better plan their day at the event andmake it easier to locate the areas they’rereally interested in. The supportingconference programme, meanwhile, is oftenstranded to place the most relevantspeakers next to each other –supplementing the straight presentationsand speeches with debate to ensure a morevibrant and interesting event. The perfect conference is a mix of theformal and informal – so even if a lot ofsolid information is to be given out, Q&Asessions or roleplaying exercises can bring abit of levity to proceedings, or delegates willwonder what they’re gaining they couldn’thave got from simply reading the speech attheir desk.Making these shows more efficient andeffective has also helped their sustainability– an issue that is becoming particularlyimportant. The recent Olympic Games haveemphasised sustainability with venues beingcreated with energy efficiency in mind andmany being recycled after the event. Thebenefit for organisers is that venues such asthis can massively reduce the event’s carbonfootprint – indeed, many conferences nowmake their carbon emissions public – andalso lead to substantial savings in energybills.Organisers looking to ensure their eventsare as energy efficient as possible can nowbenefit from ISO 20121, the recentlylaunched standard which has been createdfor the international event industry, by theevent industry. It’s based on the Britishstandard BS 8901 which sets various criteriafor event sustainability, and the newinternational standard has been devisedwith input from some thirty nations, including the USA and Japan, ensuring itwill be widely recognised.Implementing the standards will ensurethat event organisers have methods in placefor reducing carbon emissions and waste, improving the resource efficiency of theentire event supply chain. The standardsalso include the determination tocontinually improve the sustainableperformance within available budgets. Many clients are now making the newstandard a requirement of the tenderingprocess, so organisers and venues could bemissing out on valuable contracts if they’reunable to meet the standard. One of the benefits for those meeting thestandard is that it provides an independentverification of its high quality which canprove beneficial when discussing the event’ssocial impacts. These issues, such ascommunity involvement and fairemployment, are a cornerstone of thestandard, as well as improvingcommunications and enhancing relationswith stakeholders. There should also be theopportunity to secure local investment andlong term viability. Many event organisersare likely to already be aiming for thehighest environmental approach, but thestandards will help to create a formalisedsystem that can be introduced to everyaspect of the event – its conception andplanning, the execution of the event itselfand any post-event follow-up activities. Some small changes that can be made inplanning can have a valuable effect on thesustainability of an event – for example, investing in high quality video links ratherthan flying in speakers from long distances, and making sure that the literature issourced from companies who offset thepaper used to print it by planting more trees. While creating a more sustainable event maybe considered more trouble than it’s worth,it’s highly likely that in the near future thenew sustainability standard will beconsidered a prerequisite by manycompanies so making changes now will behighly effective in the long run. The food and drink industry is certainlyThe quality of conference venues hasimproved hugely, ensuring the standardof the event can be better than ever. The versatileauditorium is the perfect space for largeconferences of up to 1500 delegates, with breakoutspaces and foyer areas. There are several smaller rooms and foyers whichprovide ideal spaces for a wide range of events andactivities including meetings, seminars, away days, training sessions and exhibitions.66-70:Layout 1 17/8/12 14:11 Page 470www.fdiforum.netfamiliar with high standards and goingabove and beyond that which is required soit shouldn’t be too hard to adapt to the newapproach. The skill setSuch is the continual spread of innovationin the food and drink industry thatemployees now need to illustrate a widerrange of skills than ever before. Indeed asautomation is increased and employers havehad to make tough decisions over the size oftheir workforce, the importance of a highlytrained workforce can’t be underestimated. This had led to a great range of trainingcourses available – and a growing number ofhigh quality training venues. Demonstrationkitchens and centres devoted to roboticshave made a major difference to manybusinesses in recent years and allowed manybusinesses to examine the latest hardwareand software, and introduce their employeesto new ways of working, without having tomake investments in new technology thatmay not prove sensible in the long run. Many companies report improved turnoverthanks to a most skilled workforce and theintelligent implementation of newtechnology. The importance of training is one reasonwhy many conferences and events are nowheld in the top class facilities provided byschools, colleges and universities. Certainly, those looking for suitable surroundings totrain their staff often find the lecturetheatres and breakout rooms offered oncampuses much to their liking. Whether theevent needs a simple room with desks andchairs, extensive audio-visual equipment oran array of specialised material, the rangeof such means there’s almost alwayssomething that’ll suit. This runs hand inhand with the increased role educationalestablishments are playing in the food anddrink industry, providing R&D facilities tointroduce new principles to foodproduction. One of the aims of the London OlympicGames was to emphasise all the appeal ofthe UK as a major tourist destination, suchis the impact that tourism can have on anation. Business tourism is particularlyvaluable – overseas visitor spend can makeall the difference to the prosperity of anation or region. This means thatorganisers of major events are likely tobenefit from a huge host of incentivesoffered by tourism managers and local andnational governments to convince them tochoose their venues as the base for theirlatest shows – and with the venuesthemselves becoming more impressive thanever, that can only be good news for theindustry’s event organisers.CONFERENCES AND EVENTS66-70:Layout 1 17/8/12 14:11 Page 5required to run a successful and profitablefoodservice business exhibit their latest productsto thousands of restaurateurs, caterers, owners, chefs, sommeliers and hoteliers. Our software solutionsare developed in house by our team of highly experiencedengineers. The systems are then implemented from the “shopfloor up” using our Vantage Industrial Touch Screen PC andassociated hardware. What achievement in your career are you proudest of?It is still ongoing but it has to be turning Stevens from a well-known British company into adeveloping global brand.Who do you most admire in the industry?Although this sounds corny, I find it hard to get past Stevens as the company I admire most: Wehave been around over 170 years now, survived and even thrived throughout, been at the forefrontof development and breakthroughs all along the way and, most importantly, we have fun doing it!What do you think will be the biggest challenges to your industry?Keeping up with globalisation. Our clients are increasingly spread across the world – I’ve justreturned from Chile where I established Stevens in South America. If we were going out to dinner, what would you have?I always choose my wine before my food so it depends on what looks good on the wine list – ifit’s red wine then steak, white wine is shellfish or seabass.Stay in touch withFood & DrinkInternationalFor more up to the minute informationfrom the food and drink industry, visit Food& Drink International online atwww.fdiforum.net.
