Thishas in turn led to an increase in the levels of traceabilitypresent within the manufacturing and supply chain – withcompanies able to find out exactly who the suppliers were ofany ingredients used in a given batch of completed products– within a few hours. This improved accuracy, and the reduction in human errorthat comes with it, has proven itself very valuable for thepackaging industry as well. Particularly when dealing withthe stringent legal requirements of the labelling, coding andmarking aspects of the packaging process. The quantity ofgoods that passes through a single production line continuesto grow as technology improves, with up to 25,000 unitspassing through a packaging line in a short frame of time.Correct and accurate label application needs to keep up withthe increased demand, and with many manufacturers nowexporting to other countries as well, the process has onlybecome more difficult. This was the problem faced by premium dessertsmanufacturer Pots & Co, who experienced rapid expansionthat saw their weekly production increasing from 10,000 to60,000 within the space of two years. Their labelling for sell-by dates used to be hand-stamped, which was a manageablePHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/06PHOTO29-33_Layout 1 24/08/2015 09:44 Page 2Food & Drink International 31www.fdiforum.netPROCESSING AND PACKAGINGLINPAC improveson-pack labellingcapabilityEurope’s leading fresh foodpackaging manufacturer,LINPAC, produces awide range of creativedesigns to help retailersmaximise shelf appealand has unveiled a newaddition to its RfreshEvolve® range, whichprovides a clear anddistinctive area to display key productinformation. The new trays aremanufactured with varietyof label panel designs, whichallow the packaged contentsand the pack information to bedisplayed individually; somethingtraditional vacuum skin packs – orVSP as it is known – do not currently allow. Director of Innovation at LINPAC, Alan Davey comments,“Rigid VSP trays provide great shelf appeal for consumers, as wellas meeting the needs of the new labelling regulations. Evermoreinformation is required on packs, which gives the pack designer achallenge.”Rfresh Evolve offers retailers a highly efficient, long shelf lifesolution, which maximises sales and most importantly, significantlyreduces food waste. The tight aspect of the VSP trays results infewer leakages and returns, but also has tamper evidence built in,as the barrier skin film whitens on peel, revealing whether a packhas been opened or not.Manufactured from 90% post-consumer recyclate, the trays canbe used on all suitably modified tray-sealing machines and arecompatible with all vacuum film supplies.Davey continues, “VSP tray designs are evolving rapidly and wecan see many ways to differentiate, tier the offer and supply a rangeof aesthetically pleasing forms. On-pack labelling and coloured trayscontribute to providing this differentiation and we are alsodeveloping a range of printed backgrounds for our Evolve range toreally make the solution stand out and look fantastic in store.” Tel: 01977 692 111 W: www.linpacpackaging.com solution when they were producing 2,000 desserts a day, butquickly became impossible when the volume increased by fiveto six times. As Operations Director Fraser Thomson pointed out, “Cashwas tight in the early days and we weren’t in a position tothrow £80,000 at a packaging line.” The solution that Pots &Co decided to go with was an offline labelling system providedby Rotech, which would allow the company to pre-label theirsleeves for an entire day in just a few hours before mainproduction started. Offline systems such as this are an ideal way for companiesto automate their labelling or coding without the need forinvestment in larger packaging lines. And while moreautomated packaging lines can be more efficient formanufacturers dealing with higher levels of stock, offlinesystems are perfect for companies that are either activelyexpanding, or whose products are not quite so mass-produced,for instance hand-made or artisan goods. Whatever the requirements however, the PPMA Show isset to cater for companies large and small, with over 300exhibitors attending the event. Whether it’s a fully automatedprocessing and packaging line for a new factory – or a bespokeupgrade for an existing plant looking to push efficiency justthat little bit further – there is sure to be something to suit.29-33_Layout 1 24/08/2015 09:44 Page 332 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netPROCESSING AND PACKAGINGDataLase leadsdigital revolutionin printLeading inline digital printing experts, DataLase, is pleased toannounce a further patent has been granted for its Variprint digitalprinting platform. The revolutionary print solution combinesDataLase core colour-change materials technology with the nextgeneration of ultra-high performance laser print engines to deliverhigh speed, high resolution, on-demand digital printing. Thisenables brand owners to digitally print products and packaging in-line at full line speeds, realising maximum benefit from late stagecustomisation.“This patent further strengthens our position, providingoverarching protection for a broad range of materials that enableinkless digital printing” said DataLase Programme Manager forMaterials, Dr. Anthony Jarvis.Variprint materials can be incorporated into a broad range ofcoatings, including water-based, solvent-based and UV curablesystems, allowing virtually any substrate to be digitally printed. Incombination with the scalable modular design of the Variprint printengine, this allows a diverse range of applications to be addressed, including high speed coding, mailing, in-line digital printing of labelsand packaging, late stage customisation of corrugated cases anddirect decoration of bottles and closures.DataLase CEO, Chris Wyres, commented “Variprint is the first ofan exciting range of digital printing solutions that we are bringing tomarket with our strategic partners. Our unique technology platformshave been designed to meet the needs of brand owners, deliveringenhanced flexibility, quality, productivity and consumer interaction.”To learn more about the revolutionary laser coding and digitalprinting solutions from DataLase please visit our websitewww.datalase.com or contact us at info@datalase.com.Parkside launch newapp technology forpack connectivityLeading UK and Asia based speciality packaging supplier,Parkside, has recently launched an intelligent packaging solution –an embedded image technology that can be printed on packs toenable consumers to connect directly to the retailer or brand viatheir smart phone or tablet.Developed under the brand name, APParition™, the solutionallows an embedded image to be hidden within existing packgraphics, the image is invisible to the naked eye, but detectable bymost modern mobile devices. This avoids the need to include bulkyQR codes on pack and frees up space for brand graphics.Once the pack is scanned, consumers access recipes, nutritionalinformation, sourcing details, vouchers, competitions and much, much more. Connectivity can also happen in store or at homegiving users complete flexibility. The data generation capability enables a better understanding ofconsumer behaviour, with the data collected allowing tailor mademarketing messages to individuals based on the data collected. Afurther key benefit of the solution for retailers is the ability to driveconsumers around their stores to purchase complementary goods, via offers and recipes, enhancing the ability to upsell the consumerat the point of purchase. APParition can also be used for anti-counterfeiting purposes toincrease brand security and is therefore particularly attractive toalcohol, tobacco and high value categories. The downloadable APP is simply linked to a specifically designedwebsite or the company standard landing page and includes up to 8pay offs for completely flexible use by the owner; the back endlanding pages also being completely modifiable without the need tochange the embedded image on pack.
