Some argue towards fullautomation as a solution to this, as a wayto improve productivity. Workers willalways be ruled by the physical limitationsof the human body, while machines do notsuffer the same fatigue. An automatedsystem can continue running for 24 hoursa day, without the need for changingteams, shifts and breaks. For food anddrink retailers who operate online storesand delivery, this enables companies tohave more flexible cut-off times fordeliveries, improving customer relationsand perhaps even making them a moreattractive choice for consumers. What holds companies back fromadopting such a scheme is often thefinancial implications. A fully automatedwarehouse system requires not onlyspecialist machinery and software, but alsoa lot of planning and preparation. Forexisting warehouses it might meanalteration, or removal of all existingsystems, which would lead to a lot ofwastage. While for new builds, there isalready such high investment being utilisedPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM / DMITRY KALINOVSKYfor distribution centres that addinganother facet to the mix in what is alreadya tough economic climate, simply isn’tdesirable. Return on investment tends tobe a little slower with fully automatedsystems, despite high labour costs. Formany full automation is simply notfeasible, and the question quickly becomeshow to improve the efficiency of what isalready in place.Materials handling is one such area inwhich efficiency can be traditionallyimproved. It is no secret that handlingmaterials in a cut-and-thrust environmentcan cause serious injury, or worse. Safetyis paramount in any business setting, andinjury cases can be incredibly costly. Speed and efficiency are often mistakenfor the same thing, and while it’sforgivable for a worker to attempt to fulfilan order by using a little extra haste, therecan be risks involved, not only to personalsafety, but also the operations of thewarehouse. True efficiency is animprovement that comes about regardlessof the individual effort involved. It is apassive component in many cases, onethat will work as effectively for oneemployee as it will for another. Assumingthe process is followed correctly, of61-63_Layout 1 30/08/2016 12:12 Page 2locating and accessing products within thewarehouse when they need to be shippedout. While most products of a particularbrand or batch will likely be stored witheach other, the individual size of thepackaging can vary greatly. Pallet-wrapping machines can help maximise onthis, by safely ensuring a wider range ofboxes can be stored together on a singlepallet. This also provides added safety tothe products if they need to be stored atheight, as there is no risk of individualpackages being knocked loose. Even whenit comes to these machines though, thereis a staggering amount of options availableon the market, with varying prices andoptions. Software, specifically Supply ChainManagement Software, can also help inthis regard, especially with accuratesummation of stock incoming andoutgoing, but also where it is stored andwhat employees will be available at thetime that it is required to be shifted. Food & Drink International 63www.fdiforum.netWAREHOUSINGcourse.Forklifts, for instance, are a staple ofthe materials handling industry, withalmost every warehouse or distributioncentre in the country operating a few atleast. What can cause confusion howeveris the wide array of forklifts available onthe market, and what roles they mightbest be suitable towards. Industrial reachforklifts are best suited to taller rackingsystems, very common within the foodand drink industry due to the sheerquantity of stock that is kept in awarehouse, often necessitating thatoperators stack their products tall as wellas wide. If your warehouse has unusuallythin aisles, possibly because of even higherlevels of stock, then a 3-wheel forklift canoffer more manoeuvrability, allowing it tooperate in these thinner aisles. What a company needs can depend ona hundred different factors, from thewidth of the aisles, the height of thestacking, weight of palletised goods – oreven how far back on a rack they arestacked. It is therefore necessary not tosimply go for what is the cheapest option, but instead to ask what will generate thegreatest efficiency for the facility as awhole. One obstacle to efficiency can often beAs always the focus is on efficiency, with a view to reducing costs throughminimising on mistakes a more traditionalsystem might make. Removing the humanelement where possible can help to notonly ensure that all data is correct andaccurate, but that there are nounnecessary paper trails to try and workthrough. Automation is king, both on theproduction line – and when it comes tosoftware packages.Any delays at the distribution part ofthe supply chain, especially if caused bynot having the correct SCM in place canbe catastrophic, as it is distributioncentres which commonly deal with directlywith the final client – introducing thatage-old risk of failing to satisfy and thuslosing a key contract. With the food and drink retail marketdominated by a few very powerfulretailers, manufacturers can ill-afford tosuffer any lost confidence with thesemajor clients. Here’s asneak peak of a story that took place recently. As consumer confidence falls and experts predict negative consumer effects following the Brexitvote, a glimmer of positivity is coming from an unexpected source. SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers, is predicting a boost in consumer passion for localbeers from Britain’s craft breweries as past experience of economic down-turn shows consumersopt to ‘trade-up on treats’.Mike Benner, Managing Director of SIBA said: “There is plenty of doom and gloom followingBrexit and while it may be the case that many consumers will look for better deals on householdspending generally, for beer there are some important lessons to be had from recent history.“In the 2008-09 recession we saw many consumers applying ‘quality over quantity’, choosingpremium local ales over mainstream beers. We also saw a strong ‘community-comfort’ effectwhereby in times of uncertainty people tend to associate themselves more with their own localcommunities. “In many ways it was these consumer trends which drove the continuing growth of local craftbeer. We expect that trend to continue in the coming months of uncertainty. These effects could bepositive for British craft-brewed beer in both the on and off-trade.”Stay in touch with Food & Drink InternationalFor more up to the minute information from the food and drink industry, visit Food & Drink International online at www.fdiforum.net.
