Located next to Junction15a of the M1 at the heart of the UK motorwaynetwork, it will operate as a dedicated nationalfrozen food distribution point.Patol is the UK distributor for the Securitonrange of ASD systems and has extensiveexperience in meeting the specific challengespresented by cold stores. One of the primechallenges was to ensure that the ASD systemcould cope with temperatures as low as -30°C.The design involved the inclusion of heatedsampling points to prevent any ice build-up. Any entrained waterresults in the efficiency of any filter beingreduced. Amazon Filters have introduced a 3-micron rated version of its SupaMesh filter, which even when wet will provide thenecessary retention of 2-micron particles under all conditions. Combinedwith exceptional flow capacity this stainless-steel sintered metal fibrefilter cartridge ensures that this increased efficiency can be retrofittedinto existing systems without compromising system performance.Bakery wrapping line uses robots for speedand gentle handlingA packaging line that makes full useof robotics and a refined system ofconveyor handling to provide speed, flexibility and gentle handling for soft, fragile leavened bakery products hasbeen built by Italian manufacturer PFMfor one of the country’s leadingconfectionery groups. Two PFM Falcon flow-wrappers areemployed for the primary wrap, each fed by a robotic system that picks product from therecesses of baking trays. The two streams of individual wraps from each flow-wrapper are then merged using apair of synchronised multibelt feeders that combine products alternately without pressureand in minimum pitch for delivery to the race tack collator. Here they are arranged in rows and loaded by a third robot onto board sheets, cut andfour-crease scored from reelstock by an on line diecutter. The board is ploughed over tocreate a tray with carry-over top and then overwrapped on a further Falcon machine.Wheat genome discovery paves way forhigher yields, enhanced nutritionThe entire sequence of the genome of breadwheat has been published, paving the way forwheat with better yields, enhanced nutritionalquality, improved sustainability and bettersuitability to climate change. The genome was published by the InternationalWheat Genome Sequencing Consortium in thejournal Science following thirteen years ofcollaborative international research.Hikmet Budak, Winifred Asbjornson PlantSciences Chair in the Montana State University(MSU) College of Agriculture, was one of more than 200 scientists from 73 researchinstitutions in 20 countries who authored the research article. He said: “The publication has so many implications not only in science, but in countriesfacing food insecurity all over the world. This could lead to higher incomes for farmers, better nutrition for world populations and new wheat varieties.
