Croxsons’ new bespoke bottle affirms love for gin Scottish distillery, Eden Mill, has enlisted leading glass packaging company, Croxsons, to design and create a bespoke glass bottle for its new range of craft gin liqueurs. Tony Kelly, co-owner of Eden Mill, said: “We wanted a bespoke bottle design that was unique and distinguishable, to stand out in a heavily populated gin market. The bottle also needed to complement the existing range and preserve our sleek brand image. The result is a quality on-brand bottle that still retains the playfulness of the range concept. Croxsons’ expertise delivered exactly what was needed, and expertly guided the process from design to the final packaging.” The 500ml & 700ml clear glass bottles features a dimpled geometric design, which indicates quality by both visual and touch. The dimpling effect clears to reveal a front label, and at the back of the bottle the brand name is subtly embossed. The closure is a wooden debossed API cap. PATENT PENDING 04-15.qxp_Layout 1 20/08/2019 11:13 Page 3Extreme weather leads to shortfall of British brassicas Extreme weather conditions in England have led to a shortage of cauliflower, sprouts and white and red cabbages, according to a spokesman from the Brassica Growers Association. June saw record amounts of rainfall in Lincolnshire – as much as 6 inches in a week. This resulted in flooded and damaged crops which has led to a shortening of supply. Crops can withstand a reasonable amount of variation in weather but the conditions in June were too much and as a result crops have suffered, and this is leading to a shortage of supply. Ironically the supply situation has been made even more difficult by extreme temperatures on the continent. In an ordinary year, parts of Europe would make up any shortfall in the UK supply chain, but Europe has been experiencing its own weather extremes. While the UK was contending with flood conditions, Europe was suffering from record temperatures. news Sustainable packaging innovations secure investment Biodegradable water bottles and packaging made from seaweed are among the ten UK companies that have secured investment from Sky Ocean Ventures. Sky Ocean Ventures is a £25 million impact investment fund launched in 2018 to accelerate young companies and entrepreneurs developing ideas that can combat plastic waste. This latest step comes after Sky Ocean Ventures teamed up with Innovate UK – the Government’s innovation agency – for a £6 million funding commitment to battle plastic pollution. These ten UK companies are the first to be funded under the commitment. Jeremy Darroch, Group Chief Executive of Sky, said: “By investing in innovative new products and materials we will help turn off the plastics tap.” Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom said: “Trailblazing UK businesses are giving us all the choice to buy more sustainable clothing, packaging and cosmetics that are better for our environment.” Food & Drink International 7 www.fdiforum.net © Shutterstock/ yanik88 © Shutterstock/ Avatar_023 Don’t forget you can now read Food & Drink International Digital Editions now available on iPad & iPhone www.fdiforum.net Ideal for those who spend time away from the office o n t h e g o ! 04-15.qxp_Layout 1 20/08/2019 11:13 Page 48 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news General Mills commits to reduce pesticide use in supply chain General Mills has outlined strategies for reducing pesticide use in its agricultural supply chains after working with non-profit As You Sow and other investors. The food giant has now explicitly stated its intention to reduce the use of synthetic pesticides on supplier farms. As You Sow has been working with General Mills on this issue for several years. In 2018, 31% of shareholders supported a proposal asking the company to demonstrate reductions in pesticide use, sending a strong signal to the company.
