Now the country is making strategic moves to grow exports. Machinery and equipment spotlight16 As with any mechanised process, a machine needs servicing and maintenance. A neglected machine can lead to poor performance and lower throughput – both of which can eat into a company’s profits and operating times. Loading bays and doors21 As the first step in the supply chain, it’s important to get the process down, as efficiently and safely as possible. Meat, poultry and seafood24 Meat, poultry and seafood are major exports of the UK and a strong part of its national identity. With that identity under fire by Brexit and politics, how is the industry faring? Dust control 28 Dust and powder particles on the production line present one of the deadliest challenges for food and drink manufacturers to overcome. Bakery and confectionary32 From growing demand for healthier products to the need to boost sustainability, Food and Drink International considers the key trends impacting the bakery and confectionary sector. The machine prints up to 6 print objects per minute. Due to direct printing, there is no strange film or aftertaste, which would decrease the quality of the food. Holding up to twelve print items on a circulating tray, each item is automatically drawn into the printer one at a time. The printer then prints onto the food item, rotates, and then feeds and prints the next one. As of now baked goods and sweets can also be transported to the printer manually by placing the print object directly on the feeding arm. Alternatively, DTM Print offers custom food trays designed especially for Eddie that allow the production of multiple items in one run. The manual mode extends printing parameters to a maximum of 120 x 120 mm and allows thicker items, just like macarons, with a maximum height of 27 mm. DTM Print also offers the service to produce trays according to customer specifications. Eddie sells for €2,695 (MSRP). The Eddie food trays range from €29.95 to €49.95 (MSRP) and are available directly from DTM Print or through local DTM Print partners in Europe, Middle East and Africa. ERP solution adds value to ham production IT solutions from CSB- System have brought digitalisation to ‘a new level’ at the Spanish ham factories of international Swiss food company Bell Food Group. The production facilities in the Spanish ham regions of Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha have been brought to an entirely new efficiency level over the past few months. Until recently, redundant work steps and incomplete information were substantial cost drivers. One of the most important requirements of the Bell Food Group was therefore to change from a paper-based data capture execution to a digital information flow. “In the past, the facility did not really have an exact, comprehensive overview of the production process,” explains Sven Friedli, Bell Food Group’s Chief Information Officer. “For stocktaking, for example, it took weeks to count all hams. Now, we have introduced an integrated supply chain solution that tracks the entire process, from the purchasing of the pigs up to the sale of the ham.” Digital solution for online marketing Nestlé is the first company in Vietnam to opt for SIG’s innovative QR code closure solution “One Cap, One Code” for effective and unique one-to-one online marketing opportunities. The aim is to appeal in particular to Gen Z consumers and to strengthen their brand loyalty via a differentiated reward program. Since May, the closure caps of the popular Nestlé Milo Teen Protein drinks, in SIG’s combismile carton packs, have included unique QR codes that can be easily scanned and serve as reward points that can be redeemed online via the Vietnamese messaging application Zalo – Top 3 of Gen Z’s most used apps. SIG’s “One Cap, One Code” solution – available for SIG’s closure combiGo – enables customers to apply QR codes not only visible on the package, but also hidden on the inside of the closure. This ensures that the QR code can only be scanned after the product has been purchased and opened by the consumer. 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 25/08/2021 10:17 Page 1Vibration monitoring 24/7 Monitoring and Condition Based Maintenance of rotating machinery. Kingsmoor Packaging invests in apprentices Leading thermoforming business, Kingsmoor Packaging, has recruited three apprentices to its manufacturing site, as part of its new apprenticeship scheme. Enrolled at nearby Strode College, all three have started four-year apprenticeships incorporating formal academic training in their chosen fields. Both Chloe Lyons and Jack Crowther have joined the company as apprentice design engineers, and Ethan Morgan as an apprentice tool setter. As well as learning skills required to perform their key roles, they will also be given a good level of understanding of all aspects of the business. With the aim to better improve their overall knowledge and appreciation of the implications of their role in the wider business, they will gain experience in quality control, toolmaking, product design, sample pulling, packing and tool setting. Throughout the scheme, the apprentices will have their day-to-day progress monitored and reviewed every 3 months by Kingsmoor Packaging to ensure that the programme continues to meet the needs of the individuals and of the business. 6 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net news Nutty about plant-based and recyclable film Met Foods, the award-winning plant-based, dairy-free people are an AA BRC allergen free facility, with two separate factories producing a range of gut-friendly coconut and almond based yoghurts and spreads for food service. With the functional blends, manufacturers can produce meat alternatives that not only convince with a meat-like texture, but also a high protein content and short ingredient list. The combination of wheat and fava beans completes the amino acid profile and increases the nutritional value. The binding components enable vegan applications for both hot and cold consumption, for example, vegetable chicken breast strips and meat- free sausages. Starches and other functional components of the wheat grain ensure that plant-based meat alternatives have the anticipated texture and a convincing bite. The Lory® Bind component replaces conventional gelling agents and hydrocolloids, so that the product has a ‘clean label’ with no E-numbers. In addition to the short ingredient list, Lory® Bind results in end products with a nutritional profile far superior to other meat alternatives on the market. 04-11.qxp_Layout 1 25/08/2021 10:18 Page 6Next >
