Import and export16 Import and export is the lifeblood and future of the food and drink industry, but with many new markets emerging – it’s important to get the initial push right, otherwise one might lose out to competitors who know better. Machinery and equipment spotlight20 From hygiene and reducing wastage, to the ever pressing need to boost efficiency, Food and Drink International shines a light on the complexities of the machinery and equipment that comprise the production line. If ever there was a time to streamline operations, reduce overheads, and minimise errors, it’s now. • Daifuku • ABB Packaging materials and design28 From design to store shelves, there’s a lot to consider when it comes to packaging, especially where health, hygiene, and the environment are concerned. Dust control 34 Dust presents a serious risk to health, safety and hygiene in food and drink facilities, causing respiratory problems for staff, holding the potential to cause an explosion, as well as cross contamination. Loading bays and doors37 The role of loading bays and doors in maintaining efficient, high speed facilities is often overlooked. Meat, poultry and seafood40 With meat and fish under the microscope when it comes to environmental impact, the industry is having to adapt to a world in constant flux, and heat waves across Europe have done little to help. This powerful tool captures and saves digital images of critical foreign material (FM) contaminants that the sorter detects and rejects from the product stream. Data outputs from the software can be utilized to immediately alert operators and/or signal a downstream device. AI-enhanced FM Alert helps processors better control FM and improve documentation to protect food safety. “Thanks to the application of advanced artificial intelligence, our new FM Alert software achieves uniquely accurate results – identifying, recording and acting on true FM findings on the line” said Marco Azzaretti, Director of Marketing at Key. “The food processing industry continues to focus more and more on elevating food safety. By making product safer, this effective FM-fighting tool helps customers protect their brand’s reputation and avoid costly recalls. Every food processor wants to prevent contamination, making FM Alert universally beneficial across all applications.” For more information visit www.key.net Food Care Solutions helps companies achieve their objectives Food Care Solutions helps clients achieve their goals in terms of food safety, food quality, customer satisfaction and legality. The roadmap includes three key milestones, which will see Princes increase MSC labelled tuna products to 25% by the end of 2023, 50% in 2024 and 100% by the end of 2025. Achieving the 100% milestone represents 75 million cans (11,000 tonnes) of MSC-certified tuna per year under the Princes brand – meaning the amount of certified sustainable tuna available in the UK will increase by five times, based on current volumes. Source fisheries will include newly MSC certified fleets, in addition to the group’s existing MSC certified suppliers. Princes has been supporting Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) for over five years, with many of these now maturing and meeting MSC standards. © stock.adobe.com/HandmadePictures Del Monte Foods gobbles up Kitchen Basics Del Monte Foods has completed the acquisition of Kitchen Basics, a line of ready- to-use stocks and broths from McCormick & Company. This includes working to achieve carbon net zero as part of the company’s carbon reduction strategy One of the initiatives included funding the planting of 150,000 new trees during the year through Bristol-based environmental services company, Ecologi. Planting trees is proven to be one of the most effective tools to tackle the climate crisis, reportedly helping to undo over 30 years of carbon damage and keeping temperatures from rising above 1.5¡C. “Alongside our continued and considerable pledge to charitable endeavours, which has seen us fund the building of classrooms in Malawi, our commitment to playing our part in addressing the challenges around climate change, both at home and further afield, test both ourselves and the wider industry,” said Croxsons’ CEO, Tim Croxson. “We can’t do everything, but we must do something, and these activities represent exactly that.” Croxsons are exhibiting at London Packaging Week 21-22 Sept, at London Olympia on stand B82. NewCold grows again Europe’s largest ‘deep freeze’, on former steelworks land in Corby, is months away from completion. Automated cold storage specialist, NewCold, started work on the development in late 2020 to meet growing demand from the food manufacturing sector. Ross Hunter, Supply Chain Director, explains; “The company already has a strong demand for its services at its Wakefield site and sees Corby as a prime location in the logistics ‘golden triangle’, with proximity to frozen distribution centres of large retail and food service customers. This will enable NewCold to help our customers reduce food miles and cut costs.” “Since opening our first UK site in Wakefield seven years ago, we have seen an increase in demand for our warehouse and transport services and although the Wakefield facility is the largest of its kind in the country, handling 4,000,000 pallets annually and storing 143,000 at any given time, demand has outstripped supply.” 04-13.qxp_Layout 1 31/08/2022 09:34 Page 5McDonald’s Canada launches $1m Future of Potato Farming Fund with McCain Foods Launched in partnership with its longtime Canadian potato supplier, McCain Foods Limited, McDonald’s Canada has opened applications for the McDonald’s McCain Future of Potato Farming Fund.
