Our baseof Grimsby in Lincolnshire wasdubbed “Europe’s food town” thanksto its huge concentration ofmanufacturers and distributors.Fifteen years on, Grimsby continuesto punch above its weight in thesector – and it’s still the town fromwhere Food & Drink International is produced. As Editor of the magazine since the first issue, I’ve certainlyseen many changes in the sector – and Food & DrinkInternational has been there to report them every step of theway. Throughout it all, though, we’ve used the same formula ofincisive editorial and informed comment that has made Food &Drink International the trusted voice of the industry and one ofthe flagship publications of Business Link Magazine Group. The success of this approach is thanks to all those who haveworked on the magazine during the past decade and a half, rightup to our wonderful current team who continue to enjoyexcellent relationships with many of the major names in theindustry. You’ll doubtless have spoken to them on the telephoneor met them at the numerous industry exhibitions we appear at.Fifteen years is not an anniversary many magazines live longenough to celebrate, and it’s our team’s dedication to highstandards that has kept the magazine at the top of its game forso long. The next fifteen years will bring about new challenges – butwe’re meeting them with increased investment in our website atwww.fdiforum.net, plus our embrace of social media and newtechnology. The way in which people get their news may bechanging, but what won’t change is the importance of a trustedsource, and you can be sure of that with Food & DrinkInternational.I’d like to offer my thanks to all our readers and advertisers, especially those of us who have been with us for many years. We couldn’t have reached this milestone without you!Steve Fisher,EditorFood and Drink InternationalA word from the Editor16-25:Layout 1 14/9/12 15:50 Page 5t: +44 (0)1753 515 300www.hanovia.comthe power in UVtechnologyThe complete service… driven by qualityThe complete service… driven by qualityTel 01278 411 114 sales@langdons.co.ukwww.langdons.co.ukWe manufacture machinery to suit almostevery Cartoning & Sleeving applicationThe UK Market LeaderT: +44 (0)1724 276908F: +44 (0)1724 276909E: sales@reemantle.comExperts in foodpackaging machineryTel: 01275 836131 Sales@kliklok-int.comwww.kliklok-int.comClemas & Co Ltd INDUSTRIAL CLEANING MACHINESUnit 5 Ashchurch Business Centre Alexandra Way Tewkesbury GloucestershireGL20 8NB T: 01684 850777F: 01684 850707Email: info@clemas.co.uk www.clemas.co.ukSCRUBBER DRYERSSWEEPERPRESSURE WASHERS STEAM CLEANERS CLEANING CHEMICALS 01844 215501 sales@atlet.co.ukwww.atlet.co.ukThe completetruck at yourserviceTHE UK'S LARGEST DISTRIBUTOR OF POLYPROPYLENE, LAMINATES AND SPECIAL FILMS... What’s more, it is also an area withhigh levels of hygienic care needed, where washed and sterilised foodingredients are at high risk ofcontamination. With the potentialthreats in these two areas, high qualitymaterials handling is not something tocut costs on. Considering how necessary materialshandling containers have been to foodTHE POWEROF PLASTICWhen it comes to abiding with HACCP, containersand pallets are an area of extreme importance.26-28:Layout 1 14/9/12 15:52 Page 1CONTAINERS & PALLETSwww.fdiforum.net27new information is uncovered onmaterials and the way they reach withfood, the specifications are constantlychanging. Plastic is the current mega-material forthe food and drink industry. However interms of food containers and pallets, plastic did not quite catch on. Plasticcontainers are typically much cheaper toproduce for purpose, and can savecompanies money compared to metalcontainers. Though their load bearing isobviously less than metal, in terms ofmaterials handling where human staffmembers will be carrying the products, this is rarely a problem. In cases wherethe weight will realistically exceed theircapability to lift, there are a wide range ofadaptations available on wheels. Since the EU 1935/2004 regulation, and the associated directives, came intoforce the quality of a pallet has toundergo further study. The rulingensures that materials that come intocontact with food should be safe, andmake as little impact on the products aspossible – and that means the pallets nownot only have to comply with the2002/72/EC directive, but also new2007/42/EC and 2008/39/EC directives28 manufacturers for the last few decades, itmight at first glance appear the industryhas long ago peaked, and that no newinnovations are being pushed forward. This could not be further from the truth. In actuality, though containers to handlelarge amounts of produce have been usedfor hundreds of years, they have onlytruly been pushed towards greaterefficiency in the last twenty years or so.Older containers are often much moredangerous both in terms of the health andsafety hazards and the hygiene of the fooditself. In fact many materials used wereconsidered perfect a few years ago, butnow are banned due to health scares. Stamford Products Limited, Bayley Street, Stalybridge, Cheshire. SK15 1QQTel: 01613 305577 Fax: 01613 305576Website: www.swift-shop.comwhich offer specific guidance on plastic matrials. They mustmeet increasingly rigorous criteria regarding the chemicalsubstances used in their production and cleaning, and also inwhat quantity these substances are used.Companies such as Stamford Products can provide a range ofpallets and containers that certainly meet these requirements –and for added security and brand awareness, logos and namescan be moulded into the rotational moulded product range, atthe manufacturing stage, in various colours. This method ofidentification is extremely durable, hardwearing and suitable forall types of environments.Plastic pallets come with a range of further advantages overtheir conventional wooden cousins, from the lack of nails thatcould cause injury, to the lack of contaminating wood dust andgrain. The argument for continuing with the use of woodpallets was their tensilestrength over plastic, butwith new innovations in theplastics industry this is nolonger the case.Plastic pallets are able tohandle loads in excess ofthose of wooden pallets, withless risk of wear and tear. What’s more they suffer nodegradation as a result ofcontact with moisture orweak acids or alkali. Muchlike containers, pallets canalso be colour coded for anumber of different hygieneapplications. While woodpallets can also be colourcoded they must be done sousing paint, which may reactnegatively with certain foodproducts and thus not beallowed as part of theHACCP regulations. If it were only for these reasons alone then plastic palletswould be more commonplace than wooden ones, but plasticalso has a lifespan more than ten times that of wood, and assuch will be cheaper both in terms of replacements anddamages. They are also able to be cleaned for use in differentapplications, which gives them more flexibility within aworkforce. Wood cannot be cleaned to the same degree, as theuse of water and cleaning product will result in mould. Withthese various factors in mind, both for containers and pallets, itdoes seem unusual that plastic has not caught on as much asmetal or wood. With the many hygienic aspects of plastic one would assumeit to be the most commonly used material in the food and drinkindustry, like it is in the pharmaceutical. It seems that manycompanies continue to use their existing suppliers eitherbecause of tradition, or because they are unwilling to investigatethe other options available to them that could save themmoney. Perhaps thebiggestadvantages ofplasticcontainers istheir potentialfor goodhygiene whencompared toothermaterials.26-28:Layout 1 14/9/12 15:52 Page 3LABORATORY SHOWCASEwww.fdiforum.net29The professional food testing approach from ILSILS has the enviable reputation of being one of the finest equipped and most professional food contractlaboratory testing facilities in Europe.
