This latestgeneration food inspection unit offers 25%improved detection performance, 20%smaller footprint than similar X-ray machinesand ultra-hygienic design for quick clean andlow maintenance and serviceability. The new X-ray, which measures only onemetre in length, has been engineered todeliver industry leading levels of productintegrity while enabling customers to reclaimvaluable floor space. Incorporating Adaptive Array Technology, Loma’s X5 Spacesaver offers 25%improved detection performance. This new technology tailors resolution, depth and scaling to give the best performance. AAT eliminates the previous needto specify the diode array pixel size as the X5 Spacesaver will adjust to give ultimate detection performance for the product.Capable of operating at line speeds up to 75 metres per minute, the X5 Spacesaver X-ray detects and rejects foreign body contaminants such as bone, metal fragments, glass, stones, bone, plastics and ceramics.Robotic wrapping linehandles crumbly itemsA compact robotic packaging line that providesparticularly delicate handling for crumbly products andis able to create catering packs of typically two to sixitems in one or two stacks has been developed byPFM.The first has been built for a manufacturer of dietaryproducts and is handling gluten-free rusks, stacked innumerous pack formats, all quickly interchangeable. The line starts with a robotic arm carrying suctioncup grippers that lift two or three rows of nine rusksfrom the oven band on each cycle and stack them onthe infeed belt set at right angles to the PFM Bora flow-wrapper. Missing items are detected by laser. One ortwo stacks are then advanced into the wrapper at atime depending on pack format.PFM sales and operations director Chris Boltonsays, “Changeover between the different pack formatsis quickly achieved, with all settings held in memory forimmediate press-button recall.”Ishida X-ray provides extra layer ofsecurity for baby milkOne of France’s largestmilk producers is inspectingten million polypropylenebottles of infant formula ayear using the new Ishida IX-GA-B3043 X-ray inspectionsystem.Candia, part of Sodiaal, set up a new production lineto fill baby milk into 70mlpolypropylene bottles, foil-sealed but with a threadedtop able to take a standardscrew-on teat, for the exportmarket. As part of its rigorous approach to safety, the company sought an X-ray inspection system specifically designed for monitoring liquids in plasticbottles, cartons and upright pouches. The solution was an Ishida IX-GA-B3043 side-beam unit. Partly owing toIshida’s unique Genetic Algorithm, which greatly improves imageprocessing, the system offers best-in-class sensitivity and can pick up eventiny pieces of metal, glass, bone, shell, grit, plastic or hard rubber. The new line is producing about six thousand bottles per hour with a highdegree of confidence.Faerch Plast’s investment set to doubleproduction capacityFaerch Plast is set to doubleproduction capacity in the UK followingthe planned installation of an additionalextrusion line and associatedthermoformers at its Durhammanufacturing facility by early 2015.This key strategic move will ensure thecompany continues to meet its annualoutput for CPET ready meal trays andhigh clarity APET and PP materials forcold foods and snacks, including bakery, dairy, vegetables and cold meats. As part of this latest investment, Faerch Plast will install a range of additional associatedproduction equipment such as cutting-edge robot packing systems, cooling machines andcompressors.
