Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS) Ltd, the UK’s leading supplier of shrink-wrapping equipment, are now the proud owners of a new head office and national distribution centre. In the last eight years the business has tripled in size, leading YPS to outgrow their current premises. YPS erected a temporary building for additional storage but with growth expected to continue following a record-breaking end to the financial year in June, a longer-term solution was required. The firm’s new home is 30,000 square foot – a 50% increase in size compared to the current site – offering greater capacity to supply their customers. The plans also include a larger showroom. The company’s will be departing from Dewsbury and moving to Brighouse, with the new HQ conveniently and centrally located less than one mile from junction 25 of the M62. With several events around the globe, the Gericke group is now celebrating its 125 years anniversary. With a customer conference and an open day, employees and their families, press and business partners had the opportunity to visit the Gericke headquarters in Switzerland, see fascinating demonstrations of powder handling equipment and follow the production steps of a mixer from a piece of metal to a high-end product. During the celebration year, several customer seminars are organised in all key markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas and are open to the interested audience. These seminars are a great opportunity to learn more about the basic processes in powder handling such as mixing, feeding, size control or conveying. It follows the company’s poll of 2,000 adults which found confusion over the difference between best before and use by dates. The study revealed that whilst 77% of respondents check food and drink packaging before they purchase, only 15% are confident they can decipher everything on the label. This includes best before and use by dates with 34% of Brits unsure of the difference, and 11% believing them to be the same thing. This confusion means 34% end up binning food if past its best before date, while another 38% do the same once the product has passed its use by date. Now, Arla Foods claims to be the first dairy company to remove use by dates on all branded fresh milk in favour of best before dates only. ‘Natasha’s Law’ for food labelling laid in Parliament A new law requiring food businesses to include full ingredients labelling on pre- packed foods for direct sale has now been laid in Parliament. ‘Natasha’s Law’ was originally announced in June as part of measures to safeguard the UK’s two million food allergy suffers. It was named after the tragic 2016 death of teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who suffered a fatal allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette. In the aftermath, government confirmed stronger laws would be implemented to protect those with allergies and give them greater confidence in the food they buy. Currently, food prepared on the premises in which it is sold is not required to display allergen information on the label. A Statutory Instrument has now been laid in Parliament, tightening the rules by requiring these foods to carry a full list of ingredients. Natasha’s Law will come into force in October 2021. news © Shutterstock/kyrien © Shutterstock/Nestor Rizhniak Orkla expands European presence via Vamo purchase Orkla Food Ingredients has acquired Dutch bakery ingredient manufacturer, Vamo, for an undisclosed amount. PepsiCo to reduce virgin plastic in beverage portfolio PepsiCo is accelerating its plastic waste reduction efforts by committing to reduce 35% of virgin plastic content across its beverage portfolio by 2025. The amount announced by the beverage giant equates to around 2.5 million metric tonnes of cumulative virgin plastic. To achieve this aim, the company said it will increase the use of recycled content and alternative packaging in its beverage brands – which includes Life Water. Additionally, through the expansion of PepsiCo’s SodaStream business, an estimated 67 billion plastic bottles will be avoided through 2025. These targets advance PepsiCo’s sustainable packaging vision and reinforce its “Beyond the Bottle” strategy which, in addition to SodaStream, includes the mobile-enabled Hydration Platform and other offerings that deliver beverages without single-use plastic bottles. PepsiCo’s sustainable plastics vision is rooted in three pillars: reducing the amount of plastics used, boosting recycling rates, and reinventing plastic packaging. © Shutterstock/Dusan Petkovic © Shutterstock/mam_mia © Shutterstock/Ioan Panaite 04-09.qxp_Layout 1 23/09/2019 10:21 Page 3news Food & Drink International 7 www.fdiforum.net Bi-Metal Temperature Gauges from Labfacility Bi-Metal Stainless Steel gauges are available with bottom, back or ‘any-angle’ entry styles. European brewers make consumer labelling commitment European brewers have committed to labelling ingredients and energy values on all beer bottles and cans in the EU by 2022. The commitment was spearheaded by the Brewers of Europe who have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with its members to form a Brewer’s Ambition. Europe’s brewers have been making significant progress towards better consumer information, with 60% of beers already labelling calories, whilst 85% carry an ingredients list. With the signing by key countries of the MoU, those numbers will already grow significantly by next year. The ultimate wish is that consumers receive understandable, recognisable, comparable and accurate information for all alcoholic beverages. Thirty-seven initial signatories, including 25 national brewers’ associations, have put their name to the MoU and the Brewers’ Ambition 2022.
