The products organise a facility and segregate pedestriansfrom moving vehicles. But what about those forklift forks protruding under barriers andonto walkways.McCue’s R&D team solved the problem by delivering the ultra-strong, multi-functionalFlexCore Guard Rail – pictured. The handrails still guide pedestrians and organise a facility, but a reinforced ground level rail with hidden hardware offers an extra strong layer ofprotection. For more information, visit www.mccue.com.emissions than their diesel-poweredcounterparts, and as such are anattractive option for wastemanagement specialists. Ultimatelyhowever, the final decision often comesdown to the bottom line – what will therunning costs be if a change is made? One concern, especially in the UK, isthe lack of facilities at which to refuelsuch a vehicle. Fuelling stations tend tomake their money by catering to bothcommercial and public vehicles, andinvesting in new pumps specifically forNGV’s is something they likely won’t do– unless NGV’s start to outnumberRGV’s. But conversely, logisticscompanies are loathe to switch toNGV’s until the stations start to havethe facilities for them. It’s a catch-22situation, where both sides are waitingfor the other to adapt first, and as suchneither changes. When it comes to pricing CNG iscurrently priced competitively withdiesel, though the recent falls in oilprices have left some in a position of“wait and see.” In recent years the priceof gas could be quite volatile, mainlydue to a relatively small amount of itbeing produced (at least in comparisonto the vast quantities of oil), but nowwith a more steady supply available theprice has fully stabilised. Of course within the UK there is theconnected concern that one of thecommon forms of CNG gas is shale, which predominantly is set to comefrom the fracking industry. As this as afuture resource is still up in the air, withvarious groups and ministers discussingfor and against it, there are fears thatthe sustainability of CNG will not last inthe long term. Another issue is of course the up-front costs of a change from RGV’s toNGV’s – as the initial investmentobviously scales dependent upon thescale of the supply chain and transportfleet. This is not helped by the fact thatthe individual vehicles can costbetween $30,000 - $50,000 more thantheir typical counterparts. One method of reducing theenvironmental impact of the logisticalsupply chain is to use methods thatdon’t fully rely on road – what is oftenconsidered the most carbon heavymedium. Intermodal transport is apopular method utilised predominantlyin the US – but also in Europe as well. The guiding principle is to mix multipleforms of freight transport to achieve anet reduction in costs, be it energy orcapital. The typical example would beto use rail to shift huge quantities ofgoods to a given warehouse closer tothe final destination – before thenhaving lorries ferry the goods the lastdistance into urban areas. While this can obviously save manythousands of road miles there is the© shutterstock/urfin38-41_Layout 1 20/10/2017 15:14 Page 3LOGISTICSFood & Drink International 41www.fdiforum.netgoplasticpallets.com+44 (0)1323 7440574XDOLW\9DOXH&KRLFH+\JLHQLFVPRRWKDQGHDV\WRFOHDQ3HUVRQDOVHUYLFHHYHU\WLPHLEAVE THE WOOD. The reason why it is so prevalent inAmerica is thanks to their abundance offlat land that is suitable for rail. UK railsystems are often not as well developed– and while that hasn’t stoppedcompanies such as Tesco utilising rail forintermodal logistics, it does meancompanies are somewhat limited inlocation. Being forced to settlewarehouses where the rail links arestrongest. Efficient use of those facilities canalso help to reduce environmentalimpact, and this is an area wherefinancial savings can be made. Efficientmaterials handling means less timewasted idling, and that can mean lessvehicles on the road – so storagesolutions and racking systems in awarehouse can help. Similarly, the speedat which products can be shifted in andout of a distribution centre can beimportant – especially in the food anddrink industry where many warehouseswill be temperature controlled, and thuscome with additional environmentalcosts and concerns. Ultimately there are methods outthere at this time to cut emissions in thetransport industry, but each will comewith serious initial investments whichmight leave many companies out ofpocket. Until the infrastructure of alocation improves to enable thesemethods, perhaps even withGovernmental incentives or aid toenable investment – the transportindustry might still be facing what is anup-hill battle in the war against climatechange. © shutterstock/TTstudio38-41_Layout 1 20/10/2017 15:14 Page 4Origin Green, Ireland’s national food and drink sustainability programme is our commitment to a safe, secure food supply far into the future.
