With that in mind, it has been given abrand new design representing its technologicalsophistication. As an operator or maintenance engineer you donot notice those technologies because of thesimplicity of the controls. The enlarged HMI panelhas the look and feel of a modern, user-friendlyinterface like we know from tablets andsmartphones. The performance of the CSi TAROS palletiserhas also improved. The new strategy is toenable Danish Crown toincrease future earnings forthe sake of the company’sowners. In future, Danish Crown’s settlement price will be benchmarked at alltimes against a basket of pig prices from the other four large pig producingand pig exporting countries in Europe. The German pig price will have aweighting of 44%, while the pig prices in Spain, France and the Netherlandswill account for 28, 17 and 14%.The company previously and exclusively compared its prices to thosepaid in Germany, though it admits that looking at single country does notpaint a complete picture. Due to the impact of one-off events, the Germanpig price is at times a poor yardstick. In the past financial year, the EU index was DKK 0.10 below the Germanpig price, whereas in FY 2014/2015, the EU index exceeded the Germanprice by DKK 0.12 per kg.08-09_Layout 1 22/11/2016 09:09 Page 1Waitrose introduce responsibly sourced EU soyaWaitrose has become the first UK retailer tointroduce responsibly sourced non-GM soya foranimal feed from Europe, reducing its reliance onSouth American supply. In October the grocer landed its first shipment ofsoya grown in the Danube Region of Europe – an areastretching from the Black Forest to the Black Sea - foruse as a source of protein in pig feed used by theretailer’s dedicated pork supplier, Dalehead Foods. The move marks the start of the retailer’s plans toreplace responsibly sourced soya beans from non-deforested land in Brazil, lowering the risk to itssupply chain as demand for South American Soya from the developing world increases. In its 2016 scorecard on the use of responsibly sourced soya in supply chains, the World WildlifeFund (WWF) gave Waitrose its top score, saying the retailer was well on the way to using 100%sustainable soya by 2020.In taking the first step towards a completely sustainable animal feed supply chain by opening upa supply route from Europe, Waitrose worked closely with the Danube Soya Producers Association(Donau Soja), a group made up of European soya growers, millers and end users.Damaged salad leaves stimulatesalmonella growthInvestigations by University ofLeicester microbiologists haverevealed that just a small amountof damage to salad leaves canmassively stimulate the presenceof the food poisoning bugSalmonella in ready-preparedsalad leaves. The scientists have discoveredthat juices released from damagedleaves also had the effect of enhancing the virulence of the pathogen, potentially increasing its ability to cause infection in the consumer.Their research investigates novel methods of preventing food poisoningpathogens from attaching to the surface of salad leaves to help producersimprove food safety for consumers.
