Shopping habits are now almost exclusively influenced by the impact a product and its packaging are going to have on the environment and, because of this, both consumers and governments are pushing brands, suppliers, and manufacturers to shift to recyclable packaging materials and sustainable management of waste. More and more governments and institutions across the world are setting new goals and implementing new regulations and legislations that are meant to help achieving those targets, including taxes, bills, fines or setting new requirements. Many countries have now banned single-use plastic, some are phasing out the use of all plastic in food and drink packaging, implementing a plastic tax, or implementing new policies that encourage people to recycle more. These new regulations have influenced numerous companies to show an interest in making their procedures and products more sustainable and pushed them into investing in new, more environmentally friendly materials and technologies. However, sustainability is not an easy goal to achieve and despite the good intentions, companies and manufacturers need to keep in mind other factors when developing packaging products and materials. Performance must always be a priority. Sustainability is important and will determine the future of our planet, but when it comes to the food and drink industry, manufacturers need to make sure their products are safe and, therefore, need a packaging that will guarantee those results. Manufacturers need to consider the processing and formulation of a packaging product, they need to consider the functionality of a product and its aesthetics; if the outside does not look pleasing, or it looks difficult to use, customers will not be attracted to it. They need to consider transportation, preservation, and durability. Products travel a lot and they do it on different means of transportation, and they are also stored in different conditions for long periods of time; it’s fundamental that food and drink products are protected by packaging that will ensure their integrity not only during their transportation, but also in storage, and that will not deteriorate over time. But product integrity does not only mean keeping the goods safe, but also not alter their taste, or smell and texture. All these factors might not always go along with recyclability and trying to meet good sustainability standards, and they can be very costly to achieve. Finally, often regulations are implemented without giving companies the time necessary to prepare and switch to new materials and practices. No new legislation is enforced on companies on the spot, but substantial changes like these require a lot of research and testing, both from a production and a marketing point of view, and often producers and brands struggle to find the necessary time and resources. Despite many governments and companies investing in creating and expanding infrastructures and technologies that will allow us to recycle more materials and more efficiently, and despite many new businesses and institutions investing in research to create materials that can be recycled and reused more easily, the resources are still limited and these technologies are very costly to use. As a © stock.adobe.com/ Joaquin Corbalan In the attempt to make the food and drink industry more sustainable, recycling and food waste present businesses and manufacturers with challenging obstacles. 44 Á 42-45.qxp_Layout 1 22/11/2021 12:35 Page 244 Food & Drink International www.fdiforum.net RECYLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT result, it is fairly challenging for companies to invest in more sustainable practices and very expensive too. Bigger investments, more infrastructures, more developed and widespread technologies would make the journey to sustainability easier, not only for big corporations and producers, but also for small businesses and households. On the matter of sustainability, food waste is another pressing issue. Food waste is the third main source of Greenhouse gas emissions. According to Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), each year 1.6 billion tonnes of food are wasted globally, and this waste contributes to 6% of the global Greenhouse gas emission. From farm to fork, food waste happens at any stage of the food value chain but despite 70% of it being produced by households, there is a lot of pressure on companies, manufacturers, and producers to better manage and reduce their waste. There are several organisations and institutions that are focusing on improving the management of food waste worldwide, educating people and raising awareness to reduce the amount of food that is not consumed and ends up in landfills. Many governments are implementing new regulations and legislations and collaborating with each other and companies to reduce the global greenhouse gas emissions and tackle climate change. Governments are also presenting new regulations that want to improve and boost corporate responsibility towards waste and improve the environmental impact of © stock.adobe.com/SkyLine 42-45.qxp_Layout 1 22/11/2021 12:35 Page 3Food & Drink International 45 www.fdiforum.net RECYLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT businesses. Ideally, waste management could represent a big opportunity for companies and brands; good management would result in a more efficient use of resources, enhanced inventory control, lower costs of productions, and, eventually, higher profits. Unfortunately, there are still only few technologies available, like in-vessel composting (IVC) or anaerobic digestion (AD), which is more commonly used and considered to be more efficient. The food and drink industry is still struggling to find a clear line to follow when it comes to waste management, but it is undoubtedly going to invest time and money in more technologies and procedures. The food waste management industry is expected to grow exponentially within the next ten years; according to Polaris Market Research, the food waste management market is meant to reach USD 54.29 billion by 2028. This growth will be an inevitable result of many factors, like consumers’ new and constantly growing interest in sustainability, the rise in awareness of food waste and the institutional commitment to tackle climate change. Moreover, the constantly growing demand for renewable energy and newer and better technologies able to do so will push and revolutionise the food waste management business and offer new opportunities to grow. There is still a long way to go, but the food and drink industry is on the right track to achieve more sustainable results and more efforts to improve businesses’ impact on the environment will be beneficial and more profitable in the long run. © stock.adobe.com/Eberhard 42-45.qxp_Layout 1 22/11/2021 12:36 Page 4dedicated event for primary and secondary packaging where you can meet hundreds of leading packaging suppliers, network with like-minded peers and hear inspiring presentations from an industry leading line-up of speakers.
