The new Atlas203-USS, as shown on Ishida’s standat interpack, offers significantreductions in film and energyconsumption to deliver excellent costsavings.Ultrasonic technology uses soundpulses to agitate the moleculeswithin the film; this causes them tovibrate and creates the heat requiredto seal the pack. Packs are sealedfrom the inside out to provide anoverall stronger and morehomogenous seal. As well as consistently high quality seals, the ultrasonictechnique requires less power, delivering energy savings of over 40%compared to standard heat-generated back and end seal operations. At the same time, film usage is substantially less thanks to the sealingdepth of the bags being reduced on the end seal from typically 10mm to3mm, and on the back seal from typically 13mm to 6mm. This equates to afilm saving of 11%.Food & Drink International 11www.fdiforum.netNew end-to-end IT solution replaces standalonesystemsFood and drink IT specialist CSB-System International has devised andinstalled a central turnkey IT solution atthe meat processing plant of Belgium’sColruyt Group. The new system meets the manydetailed requirements of the meatindustry, and has enabled Colruyt toreplace all its previous standalonesoftware programmes with a fully integrated system that delivers optimised information andmaterial flows for increased efficiency and transparency. The system features fifty software-controlled I points around the factory which co-ordinate andcontrol purchasing, cutting, batch processing, production, nutritional value management, qualitymanagement and traceability. Witness any trade fair abroadand English, Welsh and Scottish producers are nighon a certainty. One of these reasons is the constant investmentin facilities that open its many ports and pathwaysto trade. Recently, Stephen Hammond MP, theUK’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State forTransport, paid a visit to DP World LondonGateway to congratulate the team on their success.Since opening, DP World London Gateway hasseen a continued increase in ship traffic and is dueto see a new West Africa service start in a fewweeks. This means that bulk and freight loads offood and drink now has multiple routes into theUK, feeding new streams of both importing andexporting within the industry as well as associatedmarkets like pharmaceuticals and the chemicalindustry.Stephen Hammond says, “DP World LondonGateway is an important piece of nationalinfrastructure connecting the UK to internationalmarkets, with deep-sea, rail and road connectivity. Iwant to congratulate the DP World LondonGateway team for their remarkable success intaking a brownfield site and turning it into a world-class state of the art deep-sea container terminaland logistics park.”That entrepreneurial spirit extends to smallerproducers too. Recently, a Barnsley company whichmanufactures food packaging used in majorsupermarkets has looked to increase its Europeanexports. PBS Packaging, which makes seven millionplastic bags a week, has just translated its websiteinto Polish and Russian, and is working withbusiness support programme Enterprising Barnsleyto move into other countries, such as Germany andSweden. The plastic bags, called wicketted bags, arespecially designed for the automated packing ofsliced bread and fresh produce. Clients are mainlybakeries and food growers, with the bags found onthe shelves of major supermarkets and other highstreet chains in the UK. Director Howard Fearnley says, “These really areexciting times for the company. We have built asolid market here in the UK with the food bags andnow we can move into new markets and newproducts. There is so much potential in Europe. Ihave just come back from visiting Sweden andGermany, and Russia could also be a massivemarket for us too.
