It’s updated throughout the month –and here are some of the stories you may have missed. The District of Aachen, one of Europe’sleading regions for science and research, hasawarded Smurfit Kappa’s Zülpich paper mill inwestern Germany a prestigious innovation prizein recognition of its outstanding sustainabilityperformance. The AC? Innovation Award recognisesbusinesses that have made an exceptionalcontribution to innovation. Winners aretraditionally drawn from the automotive or medical sectors, but the judging panel – whichconsisted of eminent university professors including the Chancellor of the RWTH University ofAachen and senior business leaders – created a special Jury Prize for the recycled paperfacility.Smurfit Kappa’s Zülpich paper mill impressed the jury with its sustainable and profitableoperational approach. The mill operates a closed loop for production water which, due to localrestrictions around returning water to the environment, ensures that zero water waste is emittedfrom the mill. It also captures the biogas produced from the water cycle as a by-product, andburns this for energy to power production. Finally, a multi-fuelled boiler uses unrecoverablewaste to burn as fuel. The AC? Innovation Award coincides with the launch of Smurfit Kappa’s eighth annualSustainable Development report, which highlights strong progress against key strategic priorityareas including forest, climate change, water, waste, and people. The recognition by theDistrict of Aachen of the Zülpich paper mill is the latest example of Smurfit Kappa’scommitment to designing and enabling truly circular systems, and to using sustainability as adriver for business value.Christian Ludwig, Smurfit Kappa Zülpich’s Managing Director, says, “Smurfit Kappa Zülpichhas long operated circular systems that deliberately reduce waste through innovative design, and maximise resource efficiency to offer our customers an environmentally friendly product. We are very honoured that the District of Aachen has recognised our efforts.”Stay in touch withFood & Drink InternationalFor more up to the minuteinformation from the food and drinkindustry, visit Food & Drink Internationalat www.fdiforum.net.
