< Previous40 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netENVIRONMENTAL SPOTLIGHTAmazon’s $13.7 billion acquisition ofWhole Foods is proof enough that foodmeans big business. Indeed, the world’slargest conglomerates boast major foodand beverage companies under theirumbrellas. And now many of thesecompanies are coming together inprominent consortiums to workalongside government and academia toexplore environmental issues. But forsmall and mid-sized food companies, this option isn’t immediately feasible.Fortunately, there are a number of waysin which a company can have a positiveeffect on the environment and lowertheir carbon emissions without breakingthe bank or result in extendeddowntime. The most immediate and meaningfulimpact a company can have is throughits operations. The day-to-day runningof a company will likely account for thelion’s share of its carbon emissions.Machinery requires a power source, which, in turn, needs to be generated, stored and transported. All of thisleaves a carbon trail, which builds uparound a company over time. Withmajor multinationals such as Nestlé andMars taking serious steps tomitigate their carbon footprints andcreate a cleaner supply chain, it’s safeto say there’s a seachange taking place.Smaller companies can get involvedalso, be that by switching to an electricprovider that sources part – or all – ofits energy from renewable sources, erect a wind turbine on site or installsolar panels. However, acompany would require abattery storage system inorder to store excessenergy produced for usein periods of low windand cloud cover. This, ofcourse, requiressignificant investment on acompany’s part withCommit tochangeAs possibly the most expansive supply chain, thefood industry accounts for a profound source ofcarbon emissions, something food companies bigand small are tackling head on.© shutterstock/Tomas Jasinskis40-42_Layout 1 25/09/2017 14:22 Page 1Food & Drink International 41www.fdiforum.netENVIRONMENTAL SPOTLIGHTthe ubiquitous Pringles tube beingnamed the worst food package torecycle. It highlighted a wider issue atplay in the industry. A proportion ofpackages aren’t made with recycling inmind, or are simply difficult forconsumers to recycle in domestic wastestreams. Food packages incorporatingrecycled materials are becoming morecommonplace; in fact many companiesare using their recycledcomponents/ease of recyclability claimsas unique selling points. As well asutilising recycled materials and ensuringpackages can themselves be recycled, sustainable packaging is also as muchabout innovation and new productdevelopment. Packaging specialists andscientists alike have been exploring newmaterials and processes to create moreeco-friendly packaging for food andbeverage products. Exciting examplesinclude an edible six-ring for beer cans, and packaging made from naturalproducts such as tomato stems, mushrooms and coffee grounds. Logistics and distribution is,unsurprisingly, a major source of carbon© shutterstock/Fotofermerfinancial savings likely notmanifesting for years. What comes out of a company isequally as important as what goes in.All companies produce wastewater inone form or another, and for a waterintense industry like foodmanufacturing, this can be an evenmore profound issue. In many cases, water is simply outsourced to aprocessing plant or treatment facility, but now the onus is on how to putwastewater to beneficial use, ratherthan simply disposing of it. In order toclose the loop and feed wastewaterback into the supply chain, it has to firstundergo a vigorous and thoroughpurification and decontaminationprocess.Having been used during any numberof manufacturing processes, wastewater will likely contain untoldcontaminants from heavy metals andpathogens as well as faecal and otherbiological matter. To combat thesecontaminates, manufacturers and foodbusinesses have a number of options attheir disposal. Key technologies includefiltration, distillation, absorption, electrolysis and reverse osmosis.Filtration is most commonly used dueto its cost-effective and reliable nature, though reverse osmosis is gainingtraction due to its high levels ofeffectiveness. Yet there’sanother key technology which boastslongevity, efficiency and affordability. Treating and purifying water withultraviolet (UV) light is a versatile andreliable method. In cities where ageinginfrastructure is a concern, contaminates can enter the watersource and put the public at risk. Evenat a domestic level, a UV waterpurification system can destroy 99.9per cent of waterborne microorganismsin a single pass. Unlike some of theother technologies and solutionsavailable, UV is an environmentallyfriendly alternative and results in nodisinfection by-products. Moreover, itselectrical needs are low, meaning it isable to run consistently in order to keepwater safe.Using the correct and consistentdosage, UV treatment has been provento deactivate the entire rogue’s galleryof microorganisms attributed tospoilage – including viruses, bacteriaand moulds. In a triumph for health andsafety, the technology was also shownto switch-off microorganisms resistantto pasteurisation. Packaging has been a hot topic in thefood industry in recent years. 2017 saw42 Á40-42_Layout 1 25/09/2017 14:22 Page 242 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netENVIRONMENTAL SPOTLIGHTemissions for any company. But the times are changing;certainly that’s the message from government, but alsofrom the industry itself. Big companies are makingforays into driverless and automated trucks, exploringdrones for deliveries and embracing alternative fuelsand electric vehicles. Biofuels and electric poweredtrucks are a more common sight on our roads, andcompanies can significantly lower their carbonfootprint by pursuing these options. The sheer scale of the food industry means that whathappens in this complex supply chain has a rippleeffect into others. If food players of all sizes are makingcollective efforts to adopt more environmentallyfriendly practices, materials, energy and logistics, thenothers will surely follow. We’re on a precipice of globalchange, one in which the food industry is having one ofthe greatest impacts of all.© shutterstock/Ramon Espelt PhotographyYPS go green with sustainableshrink filmShrink wrapping specialists YorkshirePackaging Systems has unveiled itsnew, sustainable Bollore ‘B-Nat’ shrinkfilm to the packaging industry. The award-winning Dewsbury-basedfirm – celebrating its 40th anniversary –is now offering this unique film to meetthe demands of an increasinglyenvironmentally-conscious market. The groundbreaking film consists ofa polyethylene produced fromsugarcane ethanol. As well as sugarcane’s superior water efficiency, thefilm also captures more Co2 in its lifetime than its soybean and corncounterparts. Its cultivation does not occur on arable land, meaning itdoesn’t interfere or impact food production areas.Unlike other green alternatives, B-Nat shrink film does not incur anyefficiency penalty. It offers improved aesthetics and optics for enhancedshelf-attractiveness, with no compromise on cohesion strength for multi-packing applications. Whether on a manual or high-speed machine, there is no disparity compared to more standard, less-greencounterparts.The film is available in flat or centre-folded in multiple widths andvarying thicknesses.
