The main theme this year’s event is the future viability of the beverage industry and it will explore the challenges facing both equipment suppliers and beverage manufacturers. Alongside digitisation, automation and other technical buzzwords and innovations, globalisation is another key issue. In many sectors Germany is the world’s leading exporter, so it’s only logical to investigate this in the beverage industry as well. Many drinks manufacturers are already doing well out of the overseas market, which is sometimes more lucrative than the German market when exporting beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks, fruit juice or mineral water. This year, the Export Forum German Beverages held the day before BrauBeviale will be making its fourth appearance. A vendor-independent, non-competitive forum, it offers a platform for gaining information, knowledge-sharing and networking. High-calibre speakers will cover a wide range of different aspects of export, including markets and sub-markets, practical organisation and implementation of export business, or financial aspects relating to international payments. This year, there will be a particular focus on Russia, Italy, the USA, Belgium and Korea. In addition, best practice examples from the spirits and wines export segment will provide interesting inspiration that is relevant not just to breweries. Interested visitors should register as soon as possible to secure their place. Looking to the future in the domestic market To be able to continue to operate successfully on the market in future, each company needs to be able to count on its workforce. The issue of the lack of skilled employees at all levels is one that also affects the beverage industry. This is why on the last day of the fair, the afternoon session in the BrauBeviale Forum is dedicated to the theme ‘Next Generation’. It is directed at skilled professionals and young recruits from generations Y and Z, as well as entrepreneurs thinking about how to best manage their succession process. To find out more about the event, or to buy tickets, visit www.braubeviale.de/en. Taking place from 12 – 14 November in Nuremberg, Germany, BrauBeviale 2019 will once again bring the industry together for the world’s most important capital goods fair for beverage production and marketing. There’s been a greater emphasis on finding sustainable solutions to recycling, re-using and reducing wastewater in the food and drink industry. How can VWT UK help? The first step is for customers to understand their water requirements, this includes a mass balance to account for water being used on site and then the quality of water required. We can then also identify what the drivers are for the water recovery and reuse, there can be a number of reasons from sustainability, cost incentive or water availability. For all of these requirements from water balance studies to water reuse project design and delivery, VWT UK has the in house expertise, knowledge and technology to support customer requirements and this is all supported by a large number of global water reuse references so that we can Q&A Simon Emms, Business Development Manager – Food & Beverage, Veolia Water Technologies UK demonstrate that the VWT UK solution is effective in meeting our customer needs. VWT UK has over eighty years’ experience in water purification. How has the industry changed during this time? The technology has certainly evolved, this is driven by customers demand for cost effective and reliable water treatment systems and a greater demand for clean water. With over 80 years of experience in water purification technology this gives VWT UK a strong foundation Berkefeld PurBev 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 23/09/2019 11:09 Page 1Food & Drink International 47 www.fdiforum.net VEOLIA WATER TECHNOLOGIES UK Q&A and we are continuously investing in research and development for new technologies for the next 80 years and beyond. What steps can food and drink businesses take to make their operations more environmentally-friendly? I believe that ultimately consumers are driving manufacturers to reduce their footprint and impact on the environment, people want to know that they are contributing to environmental improvements with their buying habits, therefore food & beverage manufacturing has responded to these challenges. The food & beverage industry has also identified that being more ‘environmentally friendly’ can make them more cost effective. We should ask ourselves the question is wastewater really waste? After all we can benefit in so many ways from the recovery and reuse of water from production processes, for example in F&B we can recover effluent to generate biogas and/or generate high quality water for reuse on site, this can reduce operational costs and reduce demand on other resources such as mains water and other utilities. Tell us a bit more about how VWT UK works alongside businesses? At VWT UK we work in partnership with our customers to help identify what their next challenge will be, for example this can be managing the impact of water scarcity, reducing costs or maximising value from waste processes on site. Regular engagement and customer reviews are a key part of this, using our AQUAVISTA™ platform is another example where we can support our customers as we can monitor real time water requirements on site from volume, quality and plant performance. VWT UK not only enables food and drink businesses to better deal with their wastewater but increases the value. Can you tell us more about this process? Wastewater is now recognised as a valuable resource within F&B, more often than not it can be used as an energy source and therefore it is an area that VWT UK can deliver significant cost savings to customers by improving the effluent water quality and also by further treatment to generate a valuable resource such as biogas. There are a number of approaches that we can support a customer with, this can be from recovery and reuse for areas such as utilities, or for sites where effluent is discharged to sewer, we can help customers reduce their associated Mogden charges by removing contaminants such as suspended solids and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Each application will have its own requirements and therefore its own benefits but the range of these benefits can all contribute to CSR (Corporate Sustainability Reporting) objectives and help to reduce demand on natural resources which as we know are becoming are ever diminishing.
