< Previous20 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netENGINEERING AND COMPONENTSThe food engineering sector is making huge strides. The level of innovation isquite spectacular and companies of all shapes and sizes are now benefiting fromautomation throughout the production process.Much of this innovation is thanks to new talent entering the industry, and foodengineering has now being recognised as a vitally important specialism in its ownright. The introduction of the UK’s first MEng Food Engineering degree and theCentre of Excellence for Food Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University was agreat step forward, and more initiatives such as this as likely to be required toensure the industry can benefit from a steady stream of new recruits. As Angela Coleshill, Director of Employment and Skills at the Food & DrinkFederation points out, “An ageing workforce means that between 2010 and 2020,food and drink businesses will need to recruit 170,300 individuals andengineering is one key vital specialism we need to continue to grow and remaincompetitive. Through initiatives like the creation of the Food Engineering degree,we are working to raise the profile of food engineering by highlighting the rangeof rewarding careers on offer and the many benefits of working in an innovative, dynamic and growing sector.”To this end the food and drink manufacturing sector in the UK played a majorrole in the recent National Women in Engineering Day, with many of the biggestbrands taking part in activities to give students and educators a taste of the day today responsibilities of a food engineers, as well as helping young womenunderstand the different routes into the industry which are available to them. There are numerous companies that are making particular investments inlocating and training the new generation of engineers. Nylacast are a particularexample, having been shortlisted as Finalists for the “Made in the UK” awards forbest apprenticeship and training scheme. With a dedicated apprenticeship schemefor young engineering students, coupled with bespoke training programs for theircurrent workforce, Nylacast recently invested in an onsite Engineering TrainingAcademy which houses a wide range of practical and theoretical training programs.Talenton tap22 Innovative approaches to engineering are being helped by theintroduction of new talent to the industry20-22:Layout 1 22/8/14 10:11 Page 1Food & Drink International 21www.fdiforum.netENGINEERING AND COMPONENTSNylacast have beenshortlisted asFinalists for the“Made in the UK”awards for bestapprenticeship andtraining scheme20-22:Layout 1 22/8/14 10:11 Page 222 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netENGINEERING AND COMPONENTSIan Mallabone, Nylacast Group HR &Training Manager, says, “With our mostvaluable asset being our people, we tookthe decision to invest in and create ourown dedicated engineering trainingacademy. In addition to facilitating ourapprenticeship program the academy alsoallows us to nurture talent and realisepotential within our own workforce andcompany by tailoring and deliveringspecific training programs across all areasof Nylacast.”As Nylacast’s Junaid Makda pointsout, “Being shortlisted alongside a highcalibre of finalists illustrates the fact thatnot only does UK manufacturingcontinue to excel in global industries, butby means of developing andimplementing outstanding apprenticeshipand training schemes, we are allcollectively on the frontline of combatingthe skills shortage, paving a strong pathand foundation for future generations.”The result of these training schemesare higher quality products andmachinery that can massively improveefficiency throughout the industry. CMBEngineering have opened the CMBAcademy of Canmaking and Seaming inthe company’s headquarters at Shipley. This is a first in the industry and serve asa platform to train the company’sexisting customer base, offering in-depththeoretical and practical understanding ofseaming and canmaking. The goal is fortrainees to be able to confidentlymanufacture can bodies that meetstringent industry specifications and alsoto effectively care for and maintain thetechnical assets of their machinery –thereby ensuring peace of mind for theircustomers. One challenge that has often had animpact on the roll-out of automation inthe industry is the huge range ofmanufacturers, of all shapes and sizes. Many food producers are not as self-sufficient, in terms of engineeringsupport, as some other manufacturingsectors, making the remote monitoringcapabilities even more important. One example of this in action comesvia Newtech, the supplier of cheesecutters for the global food industry, which has updated its extruded cheesecutting solution with an open-architecture machine automationcontroller from Omron. Omron’s SysmacNJ controller, which forms part of theSysmac automation platform, providessynergy with the whole Omron range ofSysmac devices, including the variablespeed drives, servos and remoteinput/output systems used by Newtech inits cutting machines. The decision toupdate the controller to a Sysmac NJtherefore also offered the company agood foundation for more of its futurecontrol systems to be based upon theSysmac NJ, allowing it to benefit fromthe openness and synergy between themachine components. Phil Waters, sales manager atNewtech, says, “The food sector tends tofocus more on production and product, rather than automated equipment. Soanything we can offer that provides ourcustomers with peace of mind regardingmachine maintenance is a benefit. Itmakes sense to have a common supplierso that we have a single point of supportfor the machine components. We also getgood technical support from Omron andwe know that all our Omron devices willbe able to communicate seamlessly witheach other.”It’s certainly the case that arechallenges to overcome while introducingnew automation concepts, but intelligentengineering can solve almost anything –and new blood arriving in the sectorensures these solutions can be foundquicker than ever.CMB Engineering haveopened the CMB Academyof Canmaking and Seamingin the company’sheadquarters at Shipley20-22:Layout 1 22/8/14 10:11 Page 3Food & Drink International 23www.fdiforum.netLABORATORY SHOWCASENeogen ticks all the boxesIf you are looking for a food safety testing partner, Neogen’s contract laboratory service ticks all the boxes.Offering a varied range of accredited testing options with flexible turnaround times, they can assist you with theright testing plan to suit your needs.A continual investment in new technologies ensures Neogen’s range of UKAS accredited testing addresses existingand emerging requirements. With more focus on using dry or particulatedingredients in bulk and the storage of these elements26 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ARIADNA DE RAADT 24-26:Layout 1 22/8/14 10:13 Page 226 Food & Drink Internationalwww.fdiforum.netFACILITIES MANAGEMENToften not being fully contained, it’s a real issue.Thankfully, measures that have been introduced overthe last few years have meant less incidents beingreported. Simple measures like not having fully flatsurfaces at height where dust can build up and theintroduction of mobile dust extractors which can bemoved from line to line are having an impact. Withproduction often shifting several times within a dayfrom line to line and with countless tons of dust-likeingredients being transferred from storage to processorto delivery, it’s as well manufacturers are payingadequate attention. The release of mobile units with impressive handtools for intimate cleaning of machinery is also a boonfor manufacturers. With the insides of machines oftenbecoming packed with particles or dust, this kind ofinnovation means no added downtime due to long-winded dismantling of lines in order to adequatelyclean them.Creating a pleasant, clean environment for staff aswell as making sure food security isn’t compromisedmeans health and safety standards are met by proxy. Arenewed focus on specifics rather than a cover-allapproach means those managing facilities have morechance of success.Something as simple as dust build-up can stymie progress for both your staff and overall operations. The abilityto speed up production while at the sametime ensuring total security and quality ofthe individual products means thatmanufacturers are constantly lookingtowards the next step.Companies that have made the steptowards new software and hardware arereaping the benefits. You’ll be able towitness that in Food & Drink International’sown seminar at the PPMA Show, onTuesday 30th September, where CraigMochrie, Bottling Operations and SupplyManager at Scotch whisky specialistsMorrison Bowmore talks with Roy Green ofHarford Control about his journey on theroad to operational excellence using theHarford system.Craig has long been a keen advocate ofperformance improvement and leanmanufacturing so it was no surprise that hechose the Harford system to help measureperformance accurately and trackimprovements, continuously challenging hisown team to minimise production risk whilstimproving efficiency.Craig candidly admits that no system candeliver a lean manufacturing environmentbut that the Harford system has provedinvaluable in accurately measuring the keyperformance indicators, analysing andprioritising improvement actions, whilstheightening awareness to ensure that thewhole team are made constantly aware ofwhat needs to be done and when. At theseminar, Craig will explain what problemswere encountered along the way, how thesewere overcome and how the whole teamgradually bought into the spirit and reality ofcontinuous, sustainable improvement. It’s clear that the challenge for the sectoris finding the system that works for them, but the high quality of machinery and theability of many suppliers to offer bespokesolutions has had a major impact. The returnon investment can now be extremely swiftand the benefits to production can be almostimmediately noticeable. For example, the ConAgra facility inTexas, which specialises in refrigeratedcookie dough, has announced the rollover toone million produced batches, three yearsafter the implementation of thirteenIngredient Batching Scales from StevensGroup. The purchase followed the successfulpilot of a single unit on the cookie line, thecompany’s most demanding weighingoperation, which proved to lower ingredientusage costs, improve product consistency andreduce out of specification batches. The sixmonth ROI allowed a factory wideimplementation for all Ingredient BatchingScales requirements in the facility.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/PAOLO SARTORIO The next stepInnovations in processing and packaging are offering increased security andquality – and a fast return on investment31 The next step28-33:Layout 1 22/8/14 14:53 Page 2Next >
