Q&A With Our Resident Market Development Manager

We recently spoke to Mike Ralph, our resident Market Development Manager, about his role at Interlock Adhesives and the current adhesive market. Mike became a part of our outstanding team in 2024, transitioning from Henkel in the US. With his extensive experience in the adhesive industry, he has quickly become an essential member of our team. Read below to find out more…

You joined us back in March 2024, how have you found your first year?

After 30 years in adhesives I didn’t think there was much else to learn, however the past 12 months have been a fantastic education!

Could you tell us a little about your role at Interlock Adhesives?

It is essentially a technical role but with new market development emphasis as we have some fantastic, innovative new products to offer.

It’s fair to say your very experienced in the adhesives industry having worked across many markets, what do you find different about working at Interlock Adhesives?

At Interlock we respond more quickly to customer needs! This creates a more dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

Part of your role is looking at market trends – what is the adhesive market looking like at the moment?

There’s a growing demand for eco-friendly adhesives. This includes water-based adhesives, bio-based adhesives, and those with lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on developing sustainable solutions to meet environmental regulations and consumer demand.

The packaging industry remains a major driver of adhesive market growth, fuelled by the expansion of e-commerce and the demand for sustainable packaging solutions.

Flexible packaging and the need for strong, reliable seals are contributing to increased adhesive usage.

What do you think will be big in the world of adhesives in 2025?

There’s a strong push for adhesives made from renewable resources, such as bio based raw materials, and we’re proud to be leading this trend!

You’ve previously worked for Henkel in the US – what’s the biggest difference between the US market and the UK?

The most significant difference lies in the sheer size of the USA adhesive market compared to the UK market. While both markets share similar trends and growth drivers, the scale of operations and industry demands in the USA result in a considerably larger market. It’s just size really. The industry demand for sustainable, high quality, lower-cost-in-use products is the same.

What’s your favourite adhesive-related fact?

The ability of geckos to climb smooth surfaces is due to microscopic structures on their feet that create adhesive forces.

What do you enjoy away from the world of adhesives?

I like running, particularly in the Shropshire Hills where I live. Music…I play Bass guitar, and I have started learning the piano.

Lastly, if you could invent any kind of adhesive, what would it be and why?

A version of adhesive that would be fully biocompatible, enabling applications in medical fields such as:

  • Tissue repair and regeneration.
  • Drug delivery systems.
  • Internal surgical bonding.

Why? Biocompatibility would greatly improve medical treatments.
