Premier Foods has launched a low carbon wheat trial across 165 acres of arable land in southern England, in collaboration with agricultural supplier Bartholomews. The initiative focuses on reducing fertiliser-related emissions and using renewable energy to test more sustainable wheat production methods.
The trial aims to assess the viability of low carbon fertilisers that release nutrients in a more controlled way, reducing the need for repeated application. The goal is to lower greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining high-quality wheat yields.
This project supports Premier Foods’ wider sustainability objectives, particularly as flour is used in about half of its product portfolio. Learnings from the pilot will inform how the company can scale lower carbon farming across its UK supply chain.
Bartholomews will contribute agronomy expertise and data-driven farming practices to ensure measurable results. Both companies see the trial as a foundational step toward more integrated, farm-to-manufacturing carbon reduction strategies that meet growing climate and regulatory pressures.
