Merck and mantro GmbH have established EdiMembre, Inc., a Deep-Tech spin-out based in Massachusetts, targeting structured alternative protein development. The company aims to accelerate the commercialisation of cultivated meat products that replicate the texture and complexity of conventional meat.
EdiMembre leverages Merck’s edible membrane technology platform, originally developed to support cultured tissue growth. The platform also underpins high-protein, plant-based pasta applications. Merck contributes its patent portfolio, cell culture media, and ongoing technological support, while mantro provides company-building expertise and investor connections.
The spin-out is led by Chief Executive Officer Timothy Ryan Olsen and Chief Technology Officer Ryan Sylvia, both of whom previously oversaw Merck’s Cultured Meat and Scaffold Technology programmes. EdiMembre combines this leadership with a team experienced in alternative protein innovation to drive scalable production and commercial adoption.
The collaboration reflects Merck’s commitment to translating its Deep-Tech capabilities into sustainable food solutions and enabling partners to access its technologies in the emerging alternative protein sector.
