Nestlé has exited the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, less than two years after joining the initiative launched at the COP28 summit to reduce methane emissions in the dairy sector. The company did not specify reasons for leaving but confirmed the decision followed a review of its memberships in external organisations.
The alliance, which includes major global food producers, was established to improve transparency and accountability on methane reduction in the dairy supply chain. Nestlé’s withdrawal drew criticism from campaign groups questioning its commitment to methane-specific action.
Despite its departure, the company said it remains focused on meeting the goals set out in its Dairy Climate Plan and Net Zero Roadmap. It reported a 21% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions across its global operations by the end of 2024.
The move comes as the food industry faces increasing scrutiny over environmental targets and reporting. Stakeholders across the supply chain, including investors and regulators, continue to push for measurable progress on emissions linked to agriculture, particularly methane, which has a high global warming potential.
