PepsiCo expands Romanian production capacity with new high-efficiency canning line

PepsiCo has completed an $8.5 million upgrade to its Dragomirești-Deal plant in Ilfov County, Romania, with the installation of a new high-efficiency canning line. The addition takes the site’s total to seven production lines and raises annual output to more than 500 million litres of beverages. Around one-fifth of that production is expected to serve export markets.

The new line handles multiple can sizes, including 250ml, 330ml, and 500ml, and accommodates PepsiCo East Balkans’ full portfolio. Designed for scale, it can produce up to 1.5 million cans daily. The installation forms part of a wider automation strategy, integrating robotic systems for pallet handling and logistics to create a fully automated process from filling to dispatch.

Efficiency improvements have also been built into the system. The company reports an annual reduction of 210 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared with traditional canning lines, alongside a 20% cut in water use and lower electricity and gas consumption.

The expansion follows PepsiCo’s 2023 investment in a $13 million bottle-filling line at the same facility, reinforcing the site’s role as a production hub for Central and Southeastern Europe.
